G R O W I N G I N F A I T H p. 3 Small Christian Community: Word of Life 28 th in Ordinary Time And you will have treasures in heaven; then come, follow me. (Mk. 10:21) But how do we store up treasures in heaven? The 1 st letter to Timothy gives us an idea: Tell them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous, ready to share 1Tim. 6:18 These treasures, are after all, gifts from God; who means them for our enjoyment. The highest enjoyment of which is: the luxury of doing good, of helping others to be happy, and of finding joy in doing good deeds. God s Word invites us to be ready to distribute, and to be willing to communicate. The distinction between these two words allows us to better put into practice the stewardship of God s treasures: the first points to the hand which generously gives, and the second points to the heart which lovingly empathizes. Share our wealth through our hand; share our spiritual health through our heart. Be in God, Fr. Bing Small Christian Community: Word of Life 29 th in Ordinary Time The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve (Mk. 10:45) St. Paul says, in the Church, position is synonymous to charism, that is, a gift from the Holy Spirit for the service of the Church (cf. 1Cor. 12:27-31). So that power in the Church is attached to service and ministry. St. Augustine once said: With you I am a Christian, but for you I am Bishop. Here, he sees the former as grace, and the latter as office. In another sense, the former as SALVATION and the latter as temptation. The key to receiving lasting glory is Jesus Himself, and the center of Jesus mission is humble service. This week we ask ourselves: How do other people perceive us? Do we come across as person in power and authority or like our Lord, who comes to us ready to serve. Lord, when we aspire for greatness, show us that the way is to serve others. Be in God, Fr. Bing
D I S C I P L E S H I P p. 4 In the last few bulletins we ve been walking through the Spirituality of Discipleship and Stewardship. We ve heard how this Spirituality is based on our identity in God, our trust in God, our gratitude for God s gifts and on the gift of His love that we re called to receive and share. This Spirituality is the central essence of Discipleship and Stewardship. But, we must understand that this more than theology. As Father Kemberling explains Theology is something that you can think your way through. Spirituality is something you have to act your way through. We need to put it into action. Here at St Rose, we re on a journey into intentional discipleship and stewardship. We invite all parishioners to move into action: to become good stewards of the gifts that our heavenly Father has seen fit to bestow upon each and every one of us. We do this by focusing, over the course of a year, on one of four different forms of stewardship. Think of these as the four seasons of stewardship. Each season will be aligned (roughly) with the liturgical calendar. Stewardship of Giving runs from September through November. Stewardship of Praying will run December through February. Stewardship of Serving will run March through May. Stewardship of Formation will run June through August. You can remember this as GPS-F. During each season we focus on growing as disciples and stewards within the focus area. Just like the GPS on our phones and cars, it will lead us, it will show us the way. In this case the destination is growing in our Faith formation. It s also worth noting that at the center of GPS is Prayer. This is a journey. We know where we want to travel but not necessarily the path or exact directions. We ll continue to share and reflect on the journey over the coming weeks and months. If you d like to help lead the parish on this journey, I d love to sit down and chat with you. God Bless, Bryan ( As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace, 1 Pt 4:10) W i l l Y o u S e r v e? F A I T H F O R M AT I O N p. 5 Society of St. Vincent de Paul Jr. Vincentian Parents & Students of the EDGE & Life Teen Programs Many of you have heard the names St. Vincent de Paul and Jr. Vincentians on our campus and in our bulletin, and some of you are already involved. This letter is to invite the young people (Grades 5-12) of our parish and their parents to take a look at what we are about. The purpose of Junior Vincentians is to encourage our young people to grow closer to God by serving others. They do this by becoming Junior members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Our Junior Vincentians Program which is made up of Middle & High School age students, have opportunities to help with fundraisers, assist with food drives, serve at the Family Evening Meal at the St. Vincent de Paul dining hall, befriend the elderly folks at the local group homes, and many other activities. The Jr. Vincentians will meet once a month on the last EDGE and Life Teen @ 2:30pm in the Church Office. All young people participating in these programs are encouraged to attend as this program will be the SERVICE COMPONENT of our program. The focus of our meetings is to prayerfully reflect on our purpose, discuss upcoming activities, and to get ideas from the group regarding additional ways that we can help the needy. Participation in Jr. Vincentian activities can count as required service hours for NJHS, NHS, etc..
