The Lord s Prayer This is how you are to pray: Our Father in heaven (Matthew 6:9-13)
The Lord s Prayer - Overview Two versions in the Gospels: Matthew 6:9-13 Luke 11:2-4 NO CHANGES to the Lord s Prayer! Consists of: An introduction Seven petitions
The Lord s Prayer - Reflection The Lord s Prayer is the most perfect of prayers. In it we ask, not only for all the things we can rightly desire, but also in the sequence that they should be desired. This prayer not only teaches us to ask for things, but also in what order we should desire them. -St. Thomas Aquinas
The Lord s Prayer - Introduction Our Father We are not slaves nor servants of God, but rather family--children of God and inheritors of His kingdom. who art in heaven, Not to put God up there somewhere in the sky, but in our hearts.
The Lord s Prayer Petitions The first three petitions: Draw us towards God s glory Refer only to God, not to us Hallowed be Thy name Thy kingdom come Thy will be done
The Lord s Prayer Petitions The last four petitions: An offering of our expectations Concern us in the present world Give us this day our daily bread Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those whose trespass against us Lead us not into temptation Deliver us from evil.
The Lord s Prayer - Doxology Priest: People: Deliver us, Lord,. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. This response is a doxology a prayer glorifying God. This doxology is found in the Didache (an early set of Christian teachings) Not found in the Gospels.
The Rite of Peace Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. (John 14:27)
The Rite of Peace New Words Priest: The peace of the Lord be with you always. People: And with your spirit.
Fraction Rite The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? for we all partake of the one loaf. (Corinthians 10:16b-17)
Fraction Rite Breaking of Bread The priest takes the host, breaks it over the paten, and places a small piece in the chalice, saying quietly: May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it. This commingling represents the resurrection by reuniting the Body and Blood of Christ.
Fraction Rite - Lamb of God Meanwhile, the people sing or say: Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us grant us peace. We call on Christ Jesus as the Lamb of God who has conquered sin and death. This may be repeated as many times as necessary until the rite has reached its conclusion.
Communion Blessed are those who have been called to the wedding feast of the Lamb. (Revelation 19:9)
Communion - Invitation The priest then genuflects, takes the host, and, holding it slightly raised above the paten or chalice, says: Current Translation: This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. New Translation: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Refer to Scripture: John 1:29, Revelation 19:9
Communion Invitation Response The priest then prays together with the people by saying: Current Translation: Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed. New Translation: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. Refer to Scripture: Luke 7:6-7, Matthew 8:8
Communion Invitation Response Lord, I am not worthy When Jesus heard this.he said, I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. (Luke 7:1-10)
And now a word from our sponsors The FIRST COMMUNION STUDENTS
The Eucharist is a Sacrifice
The Eucharist is a Meal
The Eucharist is a Sacrament
Sacraments Transform
Jesus is like a sacrament of God And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us (John 1:14)
We, the Church -- the Body of Christ -- are like a sacrament of Jesus Now you are Christ's body, and individually parts of it. (1 Corinthians 12:27)
Question: How worthy do you feel to receive Jesus now?
Communion - Procession The Communion song is begun while the priest is receiving Communion. Whole parish stands for Communion procession to express: Patience of the poor Readiness for our journey March toward the promised land We process with hands folded.
Communion Receiving the Eucharist Stand and bow head before the sacrament Can receive Holy Communion in hands or on tongue Jesus touches me, then becomes part of me. Minister says, The Body of Christ and we respond, Amen.
Communion Receiving the Precious Blood Stand and bow head before the sacrament. Minister says, The Blood of Christ and we respond, Amen. The minister then wipes the rim of the chalice with a purificator as a matter of reverence and hygiene.
Communion - Procession Jesus is fully present: Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in both forms of Holy Communion. Some people cannot take of the consecrated bread due to food allergies. Some cannot take the consecrated wine (or choose not to) for any number of reasons. Either choice is fine. After receiving Holy Communion kneel and pray, then sing to show unity. Sit once the Eucharist has been returned to the Tabernacle.

Concluding Rite Dismissal Priest: Go forth, the Mass is ended. Reply: Thanks be to God. Kissing of altar/profound bow This kiss looks back to the Eucharist which has just concluded and anticipates the next time the community will assemble at the table of the Lord.
Closing Thoughts Holy Communion is about Christ s dying and rising. Next time you take part in Communion what part of your life will you allow to die with Christ? How will rise up new in him? At the end of Mass we are dismissed to go out and continue the mission of the Church. How is God asking you to live out that mission today?
