Sanctuary The consecrated area of a church around the altar.

Nave Area of the Church where the congregation sits.

Narthex The congregation gathers here before and after Mass.

Confessional/Reconciliation Room Where the Sacrament of Reconciliation is received

Choir Area Area where the choir, cantors, musicians sing and play.

Look closely at the picture of the sanctuary.

Items in our Sanctuary The Crucifix Tabernacle Candlesticks Altar Presider Chair Ambo Sanctuary Lamp

Crucifix A cross on which is the body of Jesus Christ

Tabernacle The place where consecrated hosts are kept.

Candlestick Candles are lit during Mass.

Altar Table in the center of the sanctuary.

The Presider Chair The chair used by the presider/priest at Mass.

Ambo/Lectern The word of God is proclaimed here.

Sanctuary Lamp It indicates the presence of the Blessed Sacrament

Items on the left of our Sanctuary Ambry Baptismal Font Paschal Candle

Ambry It holds the Holy Oils used for the Sacraments.

Baptismal Font The font used for Baptisms.

Paschal Candle or Easter Candle A candle blessed at Easter to represent Jesus Christ

Our Mother of Good Counsel Statue Our Parish is named after that special title of Mary

Vigil Lights A candle is lit as an act of personal devotion before a shrine or statue.

Holy Water Font or Stoup Found at the entrance of church and holds Holy Water.

Credence Table Table in the sanctuary on which are the implements used at mass

Ciborium (si-bore-ee-um) A vessel used to hold the Hosts before the Consecration. It is also used to reserve the Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle.

Paten A plate of upon which the large bread for consecration rests.

Chalice (CHAL-is) It holds the Precious Blood at Mass.

Purificator A linen cloth used for wiping the chalice after communion.

Pall A stiffen square shaped piece of linen placed over the chalice.

Corporal A white linen cloth on which is placed the chalice and Ciborium

Lavabo A lavabo is used during mass to wash the priest hands.

Cruets Vessels hold the water and wine

Priest and Deacon Vestments Alb Cincture Chasuble Dalmatic Priest Stole Deacon Stole Liturgical colors are Red, White, Green, Rose and Purple

Alb A white garment used by liturgical ministers.

Cincture Fabric tied around the waist over the alb and come in liturgical colors.

Chasuble (CHAZ-uh-buhl) The outer garment worn over the alb by the priest.

Dalmatic (dahl-mat-ik) A loose-fitting garment worn over the alb by deacons.

Priest Stole A long cloth scarf in liturgical colors worn by the priest over both shoulders.

Deacon Stole A long cloth scarf worn by the deacon over his left shoulder, fastening it at his right side.

Processional Candle Candles carried by Altar Servers.

Processional Crucifix Cross carried by an altar server.

Altar Server Alb/Cross/Cincture Altar server attire

Items used for special liturgies Monstrance Aspersory and Aspergillium Thurible and Boat Pyx Funeral Pall Humeral Veil Cope

Monstrance A vessel that holds the Blessed Sacrament and used during Adoration and Processions.

Aspersory and Aspergillum Aspersory contains Holy Water. The Aspergillum is used to sprinkle people and things.

Thurible/Censor and Boat The Censor/Thurible, is used to incense the bread and wine, the priest, and congregation. The Boat holds the incense.

Pyx A container to carry the Sacred Host for the sick and homebound

Funeral Pall A cloth that covers the casket while in church.

Humeral Veil A long narrow shawl like garment used at Benediction or in a procession when the Blessed Sacrament is carried.

Cope The Cope is a cape-like garment worn for special occasions.
