January 2017 To: New Altar Server Candidates and Parents Thank you for your interest in the ministry of altar serving! The required training is scheduled for two days: Tuesday, Jan. 24 and Thurs. Jan. 26 from 4:15-6:15 p.m. in the church. Trainees must attend both days in order to complete the training. It is important that you please review the Mass Vocabulary sheets with your child before he/she attends the training. It will assist them with learning so much new information. PACKET MATERIALS: MASS VOCABULARY (3 pages) COMMITMENT FORM-please complete it and bring it to the first session. A. Trainees must be 10 years old by April 2017. B. Parent s signature required C. Servers are especially needed at 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Sunday. Those who select one of those mass times have more opportunities to altar serve. D. Please come into the church to drop off and pick up your child each day. ALL parents are asked to come to the church on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 5:45 p.m. for a short information session and prayer service. Ciborium/host bowl: A sacred vessel and lid that hold the consecrated hosts Chalice: The sacred vessel used to hold the consecrated wine Large ciborium/priest bowl: Sacred vessel used for the consecrated hosts during Communion Small pitcher (or cruet) and bowl: Used by the priest to wash his hands. Cruets are also used to hold small mounts of water/wine. Large pitcher or carafe: Holds the wine before the consecration Pyx: Small sacred vessel to hold consecrated hosts and bring to those who cannot come to Mass Paten: Small flat plate to hold small number of consecrated hosts Thurible (or censor) and incense boat: Vessel in which the incense is burned. The boat holds the incense until it is ready to be burned in the thurible. Pall: Square linen-covered piece of cardboard or plastic that is used to cover the chalice
Purificator: A white linen cloth to wipe the chalice during Communion Corporal: A white linen cloth on which the chalice and ciborium are placed during the consecration Finger towel: To dry the priest s hands during Mass Processional Cross: Crucifix attached to a staff that is carried in liturgical processions Paschal (or Easter) candle: Large candle kept in the sanctuary from the Easter Vigil until Pentecost then moved near the baptismal font Candle lighter/snuffer: To light and put out altar candles. Use of the snuffer helps prevent wax from dripping/smearing. Lectionary: Book containing the Scripture readings for the Church year Roman Missal/Sacramentary: Book containing the prayers for the priest for Mass Aspergillum/Sprinkler: Metal wand with water or broom used to sprinkle holy water
Chasuble: Outer colored vestment worn by the priest Stole: Long narrow cloth worn by ordained minister, including priests and deacons Alb: Long white garment with sleeves worn by priests, deacons, and altar servers Cincture: Cloth belt with tassels at the end that ties around the alb Altar: A large, high table in the middle of the sanctuary where the Eucharist is consecrated Ambo: A pulpit or lectern where the Scripture is proclaimed Tabernacle: Place of reservation for the Blessed Sacrament (consecrated hosts).
