Pastor s Pen Boy Scouts Last Saturday, Max Manoni completed a service project in helping us clean and organize the basement in the parish center. He also helped us discard unused materials (junk) that has been stored for years. I was very impressed with Max s leadership skills and his positive attitude. Yesterday, Saturday, April 21 st, Greg Burger received his Eagle Scout at a beautiful ceremony in our auditorium. Greg completed his Eagle Scout project by totally revamping an old closet in our cafeteria to be used by AA (Alcoholic Anonymous). We thank Greg for a job well done and congratulate him on earning his Eagle Scout! Family Festival You will be hearing a lot about our Family Festival during the next month and, in fact, Kevin Fitzpatrick, our chairperson, will be speaking about it at all the Masses this weekend. We rely on this festival as a means to support our parish. Although I do ask all parishioners, myself included, to be as generous as possible to the weekly collections throughout the year, this is the only fundraiser we have. Please do your best to support us. There are many ways to support the festival, please do what is best for you. I also want everyone to know that all of us on the festival committee support the festival by purchasing raffles and the Family Sponsorships, in addition to paying for anything we eat or drink at the festival. If you would like to volunteer as a volunteer first time, or as a returnee, please send an email to Kevin Fitzpatrick at: kpf1968@yahoo.com. There are many exciting things happening at Holy Spirit parish, please make an effort to be a part of it, and, please encourage your children to share in the fun, it s their parish too! Thanks for all you do, especially as we join together every Sunday to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Fr. Grieco -2

Deacon Lachlan As you know by now, this year we are celebrating the 125 th anniversary of the founding of Holy Spirit parish. This is really a remarkable milestone for us. From very humble beginnings, the Catholic population of New Hyde Park have worked all these years to build up the faith, to build the Kingdom of God in our community. I suppose I must be getting old.actually I don t need to suppose it s a fact..but it doesn t seem like 25 years since we had our Centenary celebration. Many of you will remember the gala dinner we had at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Marcus Avenue. There were so many parishioners there that we filled both the main hall and the smaller banquet room downstairs. It was a memorable occasion. We will be holding a number of events over the course of the next year, but today I would like to mention the Parish Directory which we will be putting together. This will be a quality product, fully bound, similar to a high school year book. In the book will be pictures of the various groups who are affiliated with the parish. We will also have some pictures of Holy Spirit through the years, and there will be opportunities for every family who is registered in the parish to have their picture included in the book. The last time we did something similar was about 12 years ago. I still look through my copy from time to time, and it is something of a trip down memory lane.we all look so much younger and thinner.and it also serves to remind me of some of our old friends who have gone home to the Lord. I m focusing on the directory today, because I want to encourage everyone to have their picture taken for the book. When we produce a picture record such as this we are creating a piece of history for the generations of our families still to come. We are adding a piece to the legacy of Holy Spirit and to the New Hyde Park community. For those who wish to do so there will be an opportunity to purchase family portraits if you wish.but there is no pressure to do so. The directory is being created so that we will have a pictorial record of as many parishioners as possible..something which we will pass down to the next generations. So please come along and participate in this exciting project. The company who will be taking the pictures are the same people who have been doing our communion and confirmation pictures for many years, and they are a very reputable organization. No one will be disappointed with the quality of the pictures or the anniversary book. There will be a number of opportunities to have pictures taken, but it s important that we get as many done as possible during the first visit by the photographers. There will be a follow up if you don t make the first visit, but try not to miss it unless you happen to be away during these dates. The pictures will be taken in Martin Hall. We will need about 10-15 minutes of your time to have them taken. So that we can keep things running smoothly and so that everyone can plan ahead, we will begin taking appointments in early June. Our first sessions will be: Wednesday July 11 th 2pm - 9pm Thursday July 12 th 2pm - 9pm Friday July 13 th 2pm 9pm Saturday July 14 th 9:30 am 5pm Exciting times at Holy Spirit. Let s get everyone on board as we create a new page in our history! May Almighty God bless us, protect us from all evil, and lead us into everlasting life. Amen -3-

Easter Sunday Collection: $38,712. Your kindhearted generosity to Holy Spirit Church is very much appreciated. The disciples in today s Gospel come to know Jesus in the breaking of the bread. When we share what we have with those who are in need, we too will discover Jesus in our midst. April 22, 2018 4 th Sunday of Easter Today s Gospel occurs in the middle of Jesus ministry. At first, Jesus words seem to be about the value of self-sacrifice in a leader. I am the Good Shepherd I will lay down my life for the sheep. The Apostles likely would have accepted these words easily enough. But then comes something more strange. I lay down my life in order to take it up again I have power to lay it down and power to take it up again. Only later, when Jesus opened the Scriptures to them after His resurrection, would the Apostles understand His words. Only then would they understand why such an act was necessary for the salvation of the world. Even now, we may struggle with the necessity of Holy Week. How often do we hear complaints against the silence of God, as if He is the hired man who runs away from suffering? Jesus life, death, and resurrection is our redemption in fact. God Himself bears the full weight of sin s consequences. The Paschal Mystery is also a sign that happens in full view of the human experience. We have seen Jesus lay down His life. We have seen Him accompany others. I know mine and mine know Me. We have seen Him reach those outside the traditional flock, sheep not of this fold. Jesus is the Good Shepherd, not only in Scripture but in our daily lives. While we can t experience physically walking alongside Him like the Apostles did, the grace of our redemption continues through the Church. We are shepherded by the sacraments, by faith formation, by good mentors. At the same time, we are not only the sheep. In imitating Jesus, we, too, are invited to lay down our lives for others. We can be the hands, feet, and shepherd s crook of Christ. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who, imitating the example of Jesus, reach out to others by bringing the Eucharist to the sick, -7
