October 7, 2018 4 From the Pastor s Desk Our Gospel today speaks about Marriage, one of the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. This sacrament is meant to deepen our friendship with God and with our chosen spouse. It is the only relationship where a man and a woman promise to stay with each other through good and bad times and to remain faithful until death. The Bible affirms this unique relationship between husband and wife as it says, They are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate (Mk 10:9). Because of the human condition, however, the number of divorces has gone up. Pope Francis reminds us that God does not stop loving those who are separated or struggling in their married life. In fact, a broken marriage is one more sign of our wounded world. To assist those possibly in this predicament, the Holy Father has made the process of annulment somewhat easier for divorced Catholics. Pope Francis clarifies that an annulment is not a divorce. An annulment is a declaration that the marriage may not have been a binding marriage in the first place. He explains that what seemed to be a sacrament was not really a sacrament for reasons like coercion, immaturity, mental illness, etc. (The Church s Marriage Tribunal assists in determining the validity of reasons for seeking annulment in the Catholic Church.) Let us pray that with the love and grace of God, married couples will stay loving, committed and faithful to each other. Let us pray that the divorced may experience healing and solace from God s love. And finally, let us pray that the unmarried may grow in their friendship with the Lord. God alone loves us endlessly and unconditionally. Let us love Him back in whatever state of life we find ourselves! Pray the Rosary October is the month of the Holy Rosary, a special month to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Nick s students did that as they held a Rosary Rally last Wednesday, October 3 rd. We re all encouraged to pray the rosary alone or with others. Here in St. Nick s, the rosary is prayed after the noon Mass on Mondays to Saturdays. We have the Mary Garden, a lovely place to pray the rosary and meditate on the mysteries, the events in our Lord s and our Blessed Mother s lives. And at home, we can also pray with our families at least a decade of the rosary each day. Holy Mary, Mother of God and also our Mother, pray for us! Finally, once again we would like to thank Deacon Joseph Catanello for his dedicated service here at St. Nicholas of Tolentine. And may God bless him and his future ministry in Florida. We definitely will miss him! God bless you! Fr. John Francis
