Fish 'n Chips for Lent It was the third Friday of Lent when a faithful parishioner stumbled through pouring rain past hamburger huts and steak houses into the monastery at Mount Angel and requested shelter. He was just in time for dinner and was treated to the best fish and chips he'd ever had. After dinner, he went into the kitchen to thank the chefs. He was met by two brothers who introduced themselves, "Hello, I'm Brother Michael, and this is Brother Francis." "I'm very pleased to meet you. I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful dinner. The fish and chips were the best I've ever tasted. Out of curiosity, who cooked what?" Brother Michael replies, "Well, I'm the fish friar." The man turns to Brother Francis and says, "Then you must be..." "Yes, I'm afraid I'm the chip monk." The reading from Romans refers us to our prayer, reminding us that The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart... For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:8, 13). These are comforting words, and encourage us to ask God for what we need and to aid us in our prayer. Finally, the Gospel of Luke shows us a fasting Jesus, who was tempted as we are, and who knows what it means to be human. Someone once said that temptation arises when you re tired and weary, and the devil comes along and makes a perfectly reasonable suggestion. Jesus shows us that, with his help, we too can overcome our temptations, reasonable as they may sound.
