GOSPEL MEDITATION FOR SUNDAY 8/06/2006 THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD.. There are two basic problems in the spiritual journey. The first one is climbing up the mountain of the Lord. The second in coming down from the mountain. St. Teresa of Avila, the Doctor of the Church, had the experience of climbing to the top of the mountain early in her life. She had that dramatic experience of God which very few people ever have. Having experienced God with such intensity, it was very difficult for her to watch people trivialize religion with superficial practices or complaints about religion s minimal demands. For the next twenty years, she waited to experience the top of the mountain again, but for twenty years there was only the long journey through a spiritual valley in which she experienced the sorrows and tragedies of life. But then after twenty years, God called her to the top of the mountain again, and there He reassured her of the good she had been doing and must continue to do. In that religious experience, God reassured her of His presence in her life and of His love for her. Life is full of surprises. Around every corner, in every part of life, experiences of wonder await us. We only need to open ourselves for the possibility of the different, the unexpected. The message of this Sunday s gospel is clear. To see, we need to look! To hear, we need to listen! To experience, we need to open our minds and hearts to the possibility of God s voice! Look at the Son! Listen to His words! Open you mind and heart to His presence! We don t need to be on the top of a mountain to experience His presence. We don t need to be on the top of a mountain to experience God s fullness. Just shake off rut and routine, and He will be there. This is me beloved Son. Listen to Him. To listen to Christ s voice is to hear what we don t want to hear. To hear Christ s voice is to acknowledge a voice that is not our own. To make Christ s words our own is to let go of our need to control the truth. Christ s word can break through our prejudices, our fears, and our self-interest. Christ s word can elevate our lives by bringing us closer to our neighbors, our world, and our own hearts. Christ s word gives us what we need for our lives to be complete, doing so by taking us beyond where we are. We cannot follow Christ without first hearing His words. We cannot come to the kingdom of God without making Christ s words our own. I suspect that in the human heart there are many times we wish to escape. We would like to flee from the problems that surround us and the persons and things that trouble us. We would like to be at the top of the mountain where the glory of God is revealed. But the life of the Christian is not meant for the mountain top. Our lives are meant for the long journey of faith. Life on the mountain top would be a great experience, but the work of God is done in the mundane world of routines and tragedies. The purpose of the mountain top is to remind us where our lives are going, that each day has its limits, and yet, what we do each day has a value beyond our imagination. Cosmo Militello, Pat Naples, Frank Pope, Jr., John Novak, Rocco Sangiacomo, Al Theodore, Ethel Thomas, Mickey Zito.. AND ALL OF OUR HOMEBOUND PA- RISHIONERS. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. *If you or one of your loved ones wishes to be included on the sick list, please call the Rectory at 344-0757 before the first of each month.
