T h e S p i r e AUGUST 2017 I Thank God For You! I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. Philippians 1:3-5 This summer has been crazy, hectic and very good. As we were camping with our sons, I had a rare moment of clarity. Life is good! Time keeps moving. Don t overlook the beauty of the moment. Amber and I have two wonderful sons that can truly be a handful. Plus, we have each other, supportive family and friends, and a church home that is good. I call this moment of clarity rare because it is so easy to get caught up in the details of life that you forget the blessings. Why is it so easy to focus on the annoyances or struggles and miss the bigger picture? Yes, it has been busy. I am emotionally worn out. Hopefully, raising boys is like horseshoes where all you need to do is get close and God will take care of the rest. But in the midst of the hectic reality of life, God is active, working, and always present. Life is good. As a church, let us have a rare moment of clarity to give thanks. This summer, I have received 4 separate thank you cards. Georgia from Evansville thanked us for working on her home, beautifying her property, and being a people of generosity. Mike and Amy from Osceola, Indiana expressed similar thanks for the work we did at their home. Plus, they greatly appreciated our friendship. The church from Alexandria, Kentucky expressed gratitude for offering our church as host for their mission trip. They felt God at work their week here. And, Osceola UMC expressed thanks for the witness of our service and the work we did on their property. Thank you, people outside our church have noticed when you let God use you! On September 17, we will be celebrating 150 years of ministry through Centenary UMC. We have a good history of serving God on the north side of Evansville, and the continuity of this ministry going forward seems strong. It is important to be rooted in a place, and thankfully Centenary is deeply rooted here. It s a Godly ministry to love our neighbors as we live God s kingdom together. Our children s ministry continues to grow with another successful year of VBS. Plus, this coming school year should continue to see growth in our kid s Sunday school program. Parents, don t overlook the wonderful opportunity to have your children grow in Christ at church. Nothing is more important than our children knowing Christ, his life, and the stories of his life. The Church s ministry and community both seem to continue to grow. I am very excited to have Shawn Littell joining our staff as our new youth leader. His passion for faith and for youth is easily seen. Please, welcome him and his family, as I know you will because you are a friendly and hospitable community. We pray that together, with God s leading, we can faithfully serve the youth of Centenary and beyond. As I have led the youth ministry these past two years, I hope you realize that we have wonderful youth here. They are a vital part of the church community. Finally, I give thanks for this church as a faith community. You are a good and caring people. The fellowship and friendship here can be a taste of God s kingdom. This does not mean all things are rosy all the time. It hopefully means that together we reflect God s grace, care, and love for one another. Don t overlook this as an important part of church. Hopefully together we taste communal life under the reign of God enough that we carry that reality wherever we go in the world. We are, like Christ, called to be servants. Again, thank you and take a moment to see that life is good because God is good. Pastor Danny Walker C e n t e n a r y U n i t e d M e t h o d i s t C h u r c h E s t a b l i s h e d 1 8 6 7

We would love to have everyone come celebrate the 150 th anniversary of the church. We will be honoring our history and reminiscing about the past during our 9:30 service where former pastor, Rev. Mitchell Gieselman will be delivering the sermon. After the service, we will head over to the Family Life Center to continue the celebration by having a catered meal featuring meatloaf and fried chicken. We look forward to seeing everyone then! We are asking for reservations for the meal so we have plenty of food for everyone. We will have a sign-up sheet in the Narthex soon or you can call the Church Office to let us know that you will be joining us. SUNDAY SCHOOL KICK-OFF PIZZA PARTY Sunday, August 6th at 10:45AM Pizza, Bible games, and Fun awaits all of our children who attend Sunday School on Kick-Off Sunday! Youth will also enjoy pizza in the Youth Room with their new leader, Shawn Littell. ADULTS...PARENTS...If you re not already a member of a class, we invite you to join us upstairs (on the same day and same time) in the church (Upper Room/Old Gym). There we can discuss options and you can decide what interests you most! We look forward to meeting with you. What a summer it s been in the Children s Ministry! We ve enjoyed outdoor/ FLC Sunday school, an amazing Campout VBS and a healthy junior church! In Sunday School the kids have been learning that God is the potter and we re the clay by making clay creations. They ve really enjoyed the clay and painting. In Junior Church the kids have been learning Bible stories from Genesis- 1 Samuel. We ve learned about judges, prophets and amazing people of faith. The kids soak in this time, and it s rewarding what they recall from week to week! Our VBS was a fun-filled, outdoor style, educational party! The kids really enjoyed making their bears which will be used by the Center of Hope in Evansville. They learned that God is the light and we must follow Him! We have an amazing group of kids that are blooming before our eyes! I want to say thank you all so much for your donations of time and supplies for VBS, Sunday School and Junior Church. Now that summer break is coming to an end we re going back to our grade-based Sunday School classes. Our back to school kickoff will be Sunday, August 6th during Sunday School. The kids from 3 years old to 6th grade will meet in the basement for a back to school pizza party! We still need two more Sunday school teachers for this fall semester. You can rotate weekly or monthly with a current teacher, or you can have your own class. Please let me know if you could help. We re shorthanded on teachers, and we can t run a successful Sunday school without your support. It s hard to believe our summer break is almost over! However, the weeks have flown by and it s time to resume our rehearsals. We will be having choir practice on August 23rd and 30th, and we will begin singing on September 3rd. If you ve been considering joining our choir, come on out and join us. We d love to have you!

DID YOU KNOW? Centenary will be hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on Sunday, Sept. 10th from 8:30 to 12:30. Other churches participating are Salem, Darmstadt; Trinity Lutheran, Darmstadt; Bluegrass UMC; and McCutchanville UMC. The Red Cross now uses online signups. To sign up, please go to our website, www.centenaryevansville.com and click on the Blood Drive button on the first page. This will take you to a page where you can register your name for the drive. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood. Approximately 36,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S. Nearly 7,000 units of platelets and 10,000 units of plasma are needed daily in the U.S. Nearly 21 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S. The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints. The blood type most often requested by hospitals is type O. The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood. To highlight the 150 years of our church family here at Centenary, we would like to make a photo collage. We are asking for your photographs to display throughout the next few months. You can bring the photograph to the church office and we will make a copy or frame it to keep it safe or you may scan the photograph and save it as a.jpeg file and email it the church. Please include the DATE and NAMES of those in the photo plus the occasion. August: Fun times - photographs of sports teams, mission trips, VBS, Bazaar, Feastival, Rummage sale, church picnic, etc. All Church Cleaning In correlation with fall deep cleaning and the 150 th anniversary, we are in need of your assistance with cleaning tasks on the church properties. There will soon be a list of individual tasks that can be done on your own time individually or in groups between now and the event on September 17 th. These tasks will be displayed in the Narthex near the water fountain and we just ask that you take the item you would like to complete and see that it gets done. While the tasks may be large in number, divided among the congregation they will become few. We will also be having a work day on Saturday, August 19 th from 7:30 am 12 noon to complete some of the larger tasks both inside and out. We ask each family to consider taking one task so that our church home will continue to look beautiful. Mark your calendar for the Saturday Work Day, August 19th, 7:30am - 12 noon!
