RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a period of reflection, prayer, instruction, discernment, and formation that leads to the ultimate goal of coming into full communion with the Church. During this process, non-catholics learn about the Catholic faith and way of life. It is a spiritual formation process culminating with entry into the Catholic Church with the celebration of the Sacraments of Baptism (if not previously baptized in another Christian denomination), Confirmation, and Eucharist. GET TO KNOW OUR RCIA CANDIDATES We asked our RCIA candidates to tell us a little bit about themselves and what led them to the Catholic Church. Here are their answers: BLAKE BREEDLOVE I am married with three children- Madison, Eli, and Dillin. My wife Alexis and I have been attending Mass at Mercy for over 10 years. My son Eli attended Mercy from Pre-K through 8th grade, graduating last year and son Dillin will start Pre-K at Mercy in the Fall. Originally from Lafayette, I have been in BR for over 20 years. My decision to enter the Catholic Church was to complete my family so to speak and to understand what goes on during Mass. In looking around for what I would like to go through in Baptism and inclusion as a parishioner, I was most impressed with the Catholic Church based on its traditions and RCIA process. ALLISON DIMATTIA I was raised in a non-denominational Christian home, but went to Catholic schools. Most of my friends and family are Catholic and so is my husband, Corey. I have always felt drawn to the Catholic faith, but it became stronger after having my two boys. My son Drew is currently a 2nd grader at OLOM School and since he will celebrate the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist this year, I decided that I wanted to learn more for myself. I want to help guide my boys in their faith so I decided to enter RCIA here at Mercy. KATHERINE LANDRY I was born and raised in Baton Rouge and I m a married mother of two children. I work as a nurse in the Pre-Admit Department for Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. I decided to come to OLOM by way of my background in the Episcopal faith and close friendships with several Mercy parishioners. My decision to convert stems from those close bonds. I am excited to become part of the Mercy community and I look forward to being in full communion with the church along with my friends and fellow parishioners. BATON ROUGE, LA 3

Called to Action HOLY WEEK Chrism Mass WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28 All parishioners are invited to St. Joseph Cathedral at 10:30 am to attend the Mass of Chrism with Bishop Muench. All Priests and Deacons of the Diocese of Baton Rouge will join the Bishop as he consecrates the three Holy Oils: The Oil of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens, and the Holy Chrism. These oils will be used for all Sacramental anointing of the faithful throughout the coming year. The Holy Oils will be presented in our own parish liturgy on Holy Thursday. It is at this Mass that the priests will renew their vows of celibacy and obedience to the Bishop. Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord s Supper - 6:00 pm THURSDAY, MARCH 29 This evening the Church enters the three High Holy Days of the Sacred Triduum gathering to pray and building toward the prolonged Vigil of Saturday night. This evening s celebration, the Mass of the Lord s Supper, is the threshold liturgy of the Triduum. It commemorates the institution of the Sacraments of Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood. At this Mass, the feet of 12 parishioners will be washed by our pastor as the sign of service that the Church is called to be to one another, just as Jesus did at the Last Supper. After Mass the Blessed Sacrament will be reposed in the opened Tabernacle. Parishioners are encouraged to spend time in silent prayer before the Eucharist. In doing so, we are mindful of the words of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, Stay here and keep watch with me. The church will remain open until 10:00 pm. Good Friday Solemn Way of the Cross - 12:00 pm Celebration of the Lord s Passion - 3:00 pm FRIDAY, MARCH 30 On this day, the parish community gathers to prayerfully recall the Death of Jesus. The Church celebrates NO MASS on Good Friday. The Solemn Way of the Cross will be prayed in our church at 12:00 noon. The Good Friday service will be held at 3:00 pm. It consists of the reading of the Passion, Veneration of the Cross, and Distribution of Holy Communion. Holy Saturday Easter Vigil - 8:00 pm SATURDAY, MARCH 31 Please Note: There is no 4:00 or 6:00 pm Vigil Mass. Our Easter Vigil begins at 8:00 pm and gathers around the blessing of the Easter fire. Shattering the darkness, the great Paschal candle is lit with the Easter fire, wax nails are embedded, and it becomes the symbol of the crucified Christ. The Paschal Mystery, already celebrated in various ways since the evening of the Mass of the Lord s Supper, is clearly and joyfully announced from the very beginning of the Vigil Liturgy. It is in the light of the Paschal candle that the liturgy continues to unfold. The Easter Vigil is the most beautiful of the all liturgies. Ranking highest among the celebrations of the liturgical year, it should rank highest in the spiritual life of the parish community; not a small task in places where Christmas can sometimes be considered the high point. It is at this Mass that the Church welcomes our new members into the Catholic community through Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. A reception will follow for everyone in the Parish Activity Center. Easter Sunday SUNDAY, APRIL 1 The Mass of the Lord s Resurrection will be celebrated at 7:00 am, 9:00 am, 10:30 am, 12:00 noon, and 6:00 pm here at Our Lady of Mercy. Please consider inviting neighbors, friends or family who may not be churched at this time to join you and our family here at Our Lady of Mercy on this joyous Easter day. BATON ROUGE, LA 5

Called to Action PARISH LIFE THE BELLS OF EASTER One of the most glorious moments in the Church s liturgical year is the proclamation of the Easter Gloria at the Easter Vigil Mass. Once the Old Testament readings conclude, the dark interior of the church is illuminated, the organ sounds forth, and the voices of God s people joyfully proclaim the glory of the Lord. Traditionally, the Easter Gloria is a time when bells are rung. The bells of Mercy will peal from the tower, and our sanctuary bells will ring. All parishioners attending the Easter Vigil are invited to bring bells to take part in the celebration. When the church bells ring and the Gloria begins, make a joyful noise unto the Lord by ringing your bell. MERCY AUCTION CLASSIC Thank You! On behalf of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church & School, we would like to Thank You for coming out to support our parish, our community, and last but not least, our children.
