A GUIDE TO THE MORNING SERVICE THE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Almighty nd most merciful Fther; We hve erred nd stryed from Your wys like lost sheep. We hve followed too much the devices nd desires of our own herts. We hve offended ginst Your holy lws. We hve left undone those things which we ought to hve done; And we hve done those things which we ought not to hve done; And there is no helth in us. O Lord, hve mercy upon us, miserble offenders. Spre those, O God, who confess their fults. Restore those who re penitent; According to Your promises declred unto mnkind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grnt, O merciful Fther, for His ske; Tht we my herefter live godly, righteous, nd sober life; To the glory of Your holy nme. Amen. (from Edwrd VI s Book of Common Pryer 1552). The Pryer of Confession is response to our singing of the doxology in this morning s worship service. It is only by reflecting upon the true nture of God nd doring His fithfulness to us, tht we re ble to truly contemplte upon the depth, extent, nd mgnitude of our sin. The Pryer of Confession is mde so tht we confess our sin nd experience true repentnce by reflecting upon God s goodness even in our times of strying. Thus, it is through this time of corporte pryer, ptterned fter the New Testment church, tht we re redy to continue in our corporte worship of God. Why do we hve corporte pryer? In preching on the pilgrimge of the Christin in this life, the eighteenth century pstor-theologin from New Englnd, Jonthn Edwrds sid, To go to heven fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better thn the most plesnt ccommodtions here. The time of corporte worship nd prticulrly pryer is its closest semblnce on erth since we gther with the sints of God to worship nd delight ourselves in God. Wht is Pryer of Confession? The minister leds us in Pryer of Confession to remove ny humn brrier tht might come in the wy of our blessing from God. We remind ourselves of who we re both in ourselves nd in God. We remind ourselves tht though we re His sheep, we re like lost sheep. During this time, the minister leds us in confessing the times we hve desired the things of this world tht re in opposition to the things of God. My we, in joining the minister with hertfelt greement, confess nd repent of the times we hve left undone those things we ought to hve done, nd hve done those things which we ought not to hve done. Let us join our herts in pryer in order tht the Spirit of Christ my bring conviction for impenitent herts, encourgement to wery souls, knit us together in bond of fellowship nd prise, nd bring us into n intimte communion with our Svior. Let us pry with the gol to enjoy ourselves in bringing honor nd glory due His nme.
