OOLOGAH united methodist church DECEMBER LOVE LETTER Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God. -- Luke 3:4b-6 John the Baptist reminded the people of the words of the prophet Isaiah when he went into all the area around the Jordan proclaiming repentance and the forgiveness of sins. John knew preparation was important because one more powerful than him was coming. In this season of Advent, we prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ as we remember his incarnation and prepare for his coming again. This is an intentional act, which includes reading our bibles, worshipping together, praying and listening in prayer, as well as living out the call of Jesus to care for those who are the least, last, and lost in our world. Spend time preparing for the coming of Christ each Sunday as you learn about the Spirit of Christmas from the children on December 9th. Hear once again the scriptures and songs that tell the story on December 16th, and learn how important it is to Share the Blessing on December 23rd. And then, come and invite your friends to the Candlelight Communion Christmas Eve services at 5:30pm and 11pm on the 24th. It is a holy time. You can also prepare your heart as you learn more about the story of Joseph, the one blessed with raising Jesus, each Wednesday night at 6:30pm. Lori and Larry Escalanta are leading our adult studies that go through the 19th. Come for the fellowship of a potluck dinner at 5:30pm and then join in the learning and laughter as we grow together. The children and youth will be going to the Veterans Center in Claremore on the 12th so let Calley Gray know if you would like to be a part of sharing the love of the Jesus during that time. One last reminder, if you have not yet turned in your commitment card from the Grow Deeper Stewardship campaign for Oologah UMC, please do so as soon as possible. This invitation to commitment is an invitation to deepen our discipleship and grow our roots deeper in Jesus Christ. If you have any questions or need a card, please call the church office. May you be filled with the Hope, Love, Joy, and Peace of Christ as you prepare a place for Jesus in the midst of your life. And, may you find yourself sharing those gifts with others, so that the crooked places are made straight and all people can see and experience the love of Emmanuel, God with us. On the journey with you, Rev. Dr. Jennifer Long creating, growing & sending disciples to transform the world

Confirmation will begin in January Confirmation Classes will begin January 9th at 6:30pm at OUMC. Pastor Jennifer Long will lead our youth, 6th grade and above, who have not yet gone through Confirmation. What is Confirmation? It is an opportunity for young people to affirm the faith into which they were baptized and, for those who were baptized as infants or small children, to renew the baptismal vows taken for them by their parents or guardians. Confirmation also makes young people aware of how God is and has been at work in their lives, even before they were old enough to realize it. And confirmation affirms a new commitment - a new covenant relationship - between a young person and Christ s body, the church. (Introduction to Confirmation - Creedo Curriculum) Confirmation looks at the story of faith from Creation to the Church, teaches an understanding of the sacraments, worship, discipleship, salvation, and the history of the church, and offers an opportunity to commit to a life with Christ. For those who have never been baptized, it offers a fuller understanding of faith and the church with an opportunity to say yes to God in Christ Jesus. If you have someone who would benefit from this class, please let Pastor Jennifer know. A Christmas Gift for Oologah UMC During this season of giving I invite you to consider a special gift to OUMC. We have two stockings hanging on the fireplace in the foyer with needs for the church as we set goals for 2019. The first stocking is to help pay down the debt on the building. If we can pay an extra $1000 per month for the next 10 years we can knock our mortgage from 20 years to 12. That is a reachable goal! The second stocking goes towards paying our apportionments in 2018. A-portion-meant-for-others is one way to think about our giving to these ministries beyond the local church. As part of the United Methodist Church we join together with other UMC s and we are able to do amazing things around the world as well as right here at home. For more information on apportionments, see the welcome area in the foyer or ask Pastor Jennifer about some of the ministries. They truly are amazing. All gifts are tax deductible and are a special gift, if you so choose, beyond your current giving. Regular offerings will continue to go toward the current ministries of OUMC. Thank you for making ministry happen!

Apportionment Update In order to be responsible with our budget, we lowered the amount we were paying in Apportionments (a-portion-meant for others) from our church budget. At this time, we have paid the total we will pay from our budget and have paid 49% of our responsibility. If you are willing to help us reach 60% (a bit over what we paid last year) or even 100%, please make any extra giving to this fund by making a check out to OUMC and putting Apportionments in the memo line. Let s work together to reach our goal and share our blessings with others! Sunday school classes, church groups, and individuals can take part in this way of reaching out in service to the world. ADVENT FESTIVAL

2018 CHRISTMAS BAZAAR WHAT A SUCCESS! Our "Food for Fines" warrant amnesty program has been incredibly successful! What a Great evening of fellowship and food with the ladies of the Oologah United Methodist Church. The towel exchange and Secret Sister drawn for 2019 SECRET SISTER INFORMATION PACKET for 2019 What is the Secret Sister Program? The Secret Sister program is an outreach ministry for women in our church fellowship. All of the ladies of our church are invited to participate. If you participate you will draw a name and that woman becomes your Secret Sister for a year. You become her silent prayer partner and her secret up-lifter. She doesn t know who you are. How do I get a Secret Sister? Fill out the form and return it to Karla Yates before Sunday December 30th 2018. It can be handed to Karla any time between now and then, or mailed to OUMC attn Karla 5834 E. 410 Rd Oologah. OK 74053 you will have an opportunity to draw one of the All About Me forms and that person becomes your Secret Sister. If you draw your own name, you will need to draw another form. Karla is the holder of our Secret Sisters. She will record the name of your sister and then file the information away secretly until it is time to reveal the names. If a snag develops for some reason, she will manage to resolve the problem. Such occurrences have been rare. If for some reason you are unable to be at church on or before Dec 30th, you may draw an information sheet the following Sunday. It will all work out regardless of when you draw, and it will still be a secret. Don t let the drawing date discourage you. However, IT IS important to RETURN your All About Me information sheet by December 30th, 2018 What responsibility do I have as a Secret Sister? Once names are drawn you can immediately begin sending notes, cards, or special secret greetings that can continue throughout the year. If during the year you wish to give a special gift to your Secret Sister, there is a place in the fellowship hall where they can be dropped off. We haven t set a maximum dollar amount for gift giving. However, it is important that we be modest since not everyone is able to afford gift giving. Keep in mind that it is the thought that counts. Something homemade, a sweet treat, or a simple gift is an appropriate way to say You re in my thoughts. Make an effort to get to know your Secret Sister. (In secret of course). Get acquainted during sunday school, at meetings, or church activities. If you don t know who she is, ask someone to point her out so you can get acquainted. Pray for your Secret Sister. Keep her in your thoughts. Please send a message at least once a month. Remember those special holidays, or occasions like her birthday or anniversary. Send a get well card if you know she is ill. Thinking about our Secret Sisters daily, and sending a little hello card at least monthly is why the program is so enjoyable. It s especially nice to receive those notes saying you re being thought about or remembered in a special way, or for a special reason. Your faithfulness in doing that is what will make the program successful. If for some reason you are unable to continue participating in the program, let Karla know so that another sister can be found for the lady you were assigned. Above all, enjoy the experience. If you haven t been a secret sister in the past, consider being part of the program this year. Or, if you have always been in the secret sister program, we hope you will continue to participate this year.
