Preschool WEEK 4 (April 21/22nd) The Church showed favoritism (31.3) Bible Passage: James 2:1-13 Main Point: James tells us to love others because Jesus loves us. Key Passage : "God loved me and gave himself to me Galatians 2:20 Big Picture Question: Why does God want us to obey Him? We obey because God loves us. Leader Bible Study During Jesus earthly ministry, many Jews struggled to believe that Jesus was indeed the Messiah, the Son of God. This included James, Jesus half-brother. But after Jesus crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus appeared to James, and at last James believed. James later became the leader of the church in Jerusalem a vital role in the early, growing church. The early church was comprised mostly of Jewish believers. That makes sense because of the church s origin in Israel but also because that was the mission Jesus gave: start with the Jews and spread out from there. James wrote a letter to these Jewish believers who were scattered around the region, helping them understand how their new faith in Jesus should frame how they live. James told his fellow believers that one way they could live out the gospel was by not showing favoritism. James used an example of how a church might show favoritism to a wealthy man over a poor man who came to a meeting. The natural response might be to treat the wealthy man better, but James told the believers that God does not show favoritism. God has treated all people rich and poor the same: generously with the gospel. God s kindness toward us should cause us to want to treat others with similar love, generosity, and equality. This week s session is a great follow-up to last week s. Some of your preschoolers may think that being united is just a matter of getting along with one another and not fighting. But God s heart is for us to be united far more deeply. Help your preschoolers see that the gospel should compel them to treat one another in the same way with the same love, mercy, and grace shown to us by Jesus. BEFORE THE SERVICE: Be sure music is playing as kids arrive. Set out today s Activity Page and some crayons at the tables. Review the activities to make sure you re prepared for the day. 1

WELCOME Greet children by name as they arrive, welcoming the parents as well. Direct them to play together. At 5 minutes after the beginning of service, have them sit at the table to complete today s Activity Page. 1. ACTIVITY PAGE: Which is different? Lead children to circle the item that is different in each row. Say: Good job deciding what was different! Did you know that people who trust in Jesus live differently than people who do not trust in Jesus? Let s listen for how believers should be different in today s Bible story. 2. COLLECT THE OFFERING Pass around the offering bag or bucket to collect any offering for today. Say: Why do we collect offering? (Answer: To pass the blessings God has given us back to His church!) LARGE GROUP 1. MUSIC While the kids finish playing or coloring, get the worship DVD ready. Choose 3 or 4 songs to sing today. Say: It s large group time! Come sit in a circle with us! We re going to sing some fun songs together that worship God! Why do we sing to God? (Answer: To honor Him with our worship!) 2. STORY TIME Lead children to sit down, and cross their legs and listen as you read the story or as they watch the bible story video. Ask preschoolers to tell you their favorite flavor ice cream. Say: Having a favorite ice cream flavor is OK, but showing favoritism with people is not. Favoritism is treating some people better than other people. Let s hear our Bible story: The Church showed favoritism James 2:1-13 The early church had many leaders. One of these leaders was James. James was Jesus younger brother, the son of Mary and Joseph, and he was a leader at the church in Jerusalem. James wrote a letter to other believers. He told them how they should live. People who trust in Jesus should be different than people who do not believe in Jesus. They should do good and right things because they trust in Him. James said, People who believe in Jesus should not show favoritism. That means they should not treat some people better than they treat other people. They should treat everyone the same. James said, If someone with lots of money and fancy clothes comes to church, do not treat him better than other people. Do not give the rich man a seat and tell the poor man to stand or sit on the floor. God does not have favorites. He does not treat rich people better than poor people. God has a place in His family for everyone who loves Him. 2

God says to love other people like you love yourself. If you treat some people with kindness but you are unkind to other people, you are not obeying God. James told the believers to be kind to people who do not deserve kindness because God showed kindness to us when we did not deserve it. We were sinners, but God sent Jesus to rescue us. Christ Connection: James said treating some people better than others is the wrong thing to do. Jesus said people who follow Him should love one another. Jesus showed kindness to us, so we can show kindness to others. 3. TALK ABOUT THE BIBLE STORY Say: James tells us to love others because Jesus loves us. James said treating some people better than others is the wrong thing to do. God does not have favorites. God has a place in His family for everyone who trusts in Him. Point to the Bible story picture as you ask the following review questions: Should believers in Jesus live differently or the same as people who do not believe? (differently) What does favoritism mean? (treating some people better than other people) Does God have favorites? (No, God has a place in His family for everyone who loves Him.) Are you obeying God if you are kind to some people but are unkind to others? (no) Why should we show kindness to people who do not deserve it? (because God showed kindness to us when we did not deserve it) 4. KEY PASSAGE Read the key passage aloud several times. Say: Our key passage tells us that Jesus gave up His life to rescue us from sin. Jesus showed kindness to us even though we did not deserve it. We can show kindness to all people like Jesus showed kindness to us. I live by faith (point to yourself) in the son of God (point to Heaven) who loved me (cross hands on your heart) and gave Himself to me (hands out like a gift then point to yourself) Galatians 2:20 (open hands like a book) 5. PRAYER REQUESTS Say: Why do we pray? (Answer: To open our hearts to God and talk to Him!) Ask the group if anyone has any prayer requests. Write their prayer requests in the notebook, then finish by praying, being sure to pray for each request 3

BIBLE STORY ACTIVITIES 1. Make a favorite color chart Before the session, write Our Favorite Colors at the top of a large sheet of paper. On the left side of the paper, make a row for each of the following colors: brown, purple, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, black, and pink. Write the name of each color with that color marker. Give each preschooler an index card and a marker. Invite kids to write their name on the index card. Then guide the preschooler to tape the card on the row for her favorite color. Comment on how many preschoolers like each color. Say: We all have favorite things. You might even have favorite people. Today s Bible story will answer the question, Does God have favorites? 2. Decide what is good and right Tape a sheet of red paper and a sheet of green paper on opposite walls. Explain to preschoolers that you will call out an action. If preschoolers think the action is good and right, they should move to the green paper. If preschoolers think the action is wrong, they should move to the red paper. Use the following actions or create your own: Taking something that does not belong to you Sharing your dessert with a friend Saying you are sorry when you do something wrong Pushing someone who is in your way Saying no when a teacher asks you to do something Say: What about treating some people better than other people? [Allow preschoolers to move to a side.] That is called favoritism, and it is wrong. In today s Bible story, James wrote that people who believe in Jesus should not show favoritism. They should treat everyone the same. Listen to hear what else James had to say in our Bible story. SNACK & PLAYTIME Go around and give each child a little bit of hand sanitizer to clean their hands, then give them each a graham cracker and small cup of water. Once snack is done, have a teacher lead the kids in the game while the other(s) can begin cleaning up the room and set out any take-home papers in the hallway where you or parents can get them easily at pick-up (coloring page, any craft and Big Picture Cards). GAME OPTION #1 Play musical chairs Set out one less chair than the number of preschoolers in your group. Arrange the chairs in a circle facing outward. Invite preschoolers to walk around the chairs in a single-file line as music plays. When the music stops, all the preschoolers should find a chair. The child who does not have a chair may choose a friend to sit with. Play again as time allows. Say: This game reminds me of God s family. Nobody gets left out. God has a place in His family for everyone who loves Him. James tells us to love others because Jesus loves us. Jesus showed kindness to us, so we can show kindness to others. 4

GAME OPTION #2 Parachute games Some ideas are: Popcorn : Place a number of bean bags, small balls, or cotton balls onto the parachute. Shake to make them pop up like "popcorn". Merry-Go-Round : Children turn their bodies sideways and hold the chute with one hand. They then walk around in a circle, making a "Merry-Go-Round." For variety, children can hop, skip, jump, etc. You can stop music as a cue to reverse and go the other direction. Ball Roll : Have the children try to roll the balls into the hole in the middle of the parachute. (Or have children try to keep the balls from going into the hole in the center.) Making Waves : Children can make small, medium, or large movements to make various types of "waves." All Change : The Teacher calls out birthday months, pre-assigned numbers, colors, etc, and those children swap places under the chute before it falls, and run to an empty space. Beach Ball Fun : Use a beach ball, moving it with waves, around on the parachute. Parachute Tag : Lift the parachute high overhead. Call one child's name and have her run (skip, hop, twirl or crawl) to the other side before the parachute comes down and tags her. DISMISSAL Greeter should stand just outside the classroom door with the attendance sheet, calling kids to come one at a time. Check that the parent and child tags match and collect them both at the door before allowing the child to leave. If parent lost their security tag, greeter should send parent to the check-in desk for approval (never allow a child to go to a parent unless they have the security tag). As children leave with their parents, remember to say: It was wonderful having you join us today! See you next week! and distribute the preschool lesson cards for families. 5
