The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 KGS 4:42-44; PS 145:10-11, 15-18; EPH 4:1-6; JN 6:1-15 July 29, 2018 Encouraging the Body of Christ to BE the Body of Christ... continued from: The Constitution taught that Christ is Present in "His W ord" (the readings from the Bible)... In 1970, in accordance with the decrees of the Second V atican Council, the Church finally responded formally to the teachings of the Protestant reactionaries (the Reformation mid-16th century), who taught that the only source for the truth of (from and about) God is the Bible. This ethic, expressed succinctly in Martin Luther s phrasing sola scriptura (only Scripture), excludes the revelation of Truth about God in Tradition and ritual. At the time of Luther, in an all too typical human response, the Catholic Church limited the Scripture proclaimed during Mass (lest we be appearing to agree with the Protestants about the teaching of Revelation in our worship). Notice how much the reform of the Liturgy affected how much of the Word of God the People (the Assembly) now hear (how much more the People of God receive): Before Vatican II, at Mass, the People heard approximately only 1% of the Old Testament 17% of the New Testament 30% of the Gospels After Vatican II, the People of God now listen to at least 15% of the Old testament 73% of the New Testament and incredibly important, the People now hear approximately 95% of the Gospels At that time, the Church organized the readings from the Bible into three Sunday cycles (Liturgical Years) entitled A, B, and C. These cycles use the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke), along with special readings for such sacramental celebrations such as the Christian initiation of adults and ritual Masses (e.g., marriages, funerals, etc.). and two-year cycles for the daily readings (called Year I and Year II). The Gospel according to Matthew, as the first Gospel in the Bible, though the Gospel of Mark was in fact the first one written, was arbitrarily assigned as the Gospel for Year A; Mark, for Year B; and Luke, for Year C. (To determine the current Liturgical Year ADD the digits of the year for Easter, and from there, find the nearest year divisible by three. THAT year (divisible by three) is Year C. The next year would be A, etc. For example, for Easter of the year, 2018, all of the digits add up to 11. For the next year, 2019, the digits add up to 12, which is divisible by 3. So, 2019 is Year C. Therefore, this year, 2018, would be the Liturgical Year before C, which is B. The Gospel of John is used during the Sundays of Lent, the Easter Season, and certain Sundays in Cycle B (because the Gospel of Mark is a shorter Gospel than all of the others), as well as on most Holy Days. These cycles ensured that the Catholic community listens virtually to the entire gospel from each of the four evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), a large portion of the Old Testament (especially the prophetic works) and the New Testament (especially the Pauline literature, the exhortative Letter of Hebrews, Johannine pastoral letters, and the apocalyptic literature of the Book of Revelation). In furtherance of trying to be one with our separated brothers and sisters in other Christian churches, the Catholic Church collaborated with, and shared, our reading sets with the mainline Protestant traditions (Episcopalians, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Methodists, etc.). It was long agreed, in 1972, that we would all use the same ( common Lectionary). Therefore, across Christendom, irrespective of the denomination, we all share the same Word. These readings of the Word of God are contained in the text called the Lectionary. Back to the source and summit of our worship...... more to follow...

2018 Build-A-Home Saturday, November 3 rd 5:30am 7:00pm As disciples and members of the Body of Christ, we are called to be his presence as we cooperate in the saving mission of the Gospel, entrusted to us by Jesus. As a parish community, among so many wonderful efforts, we have an extraordinary opportunity to be Christ s hands, feet and heart on Saturday, November 3 rd, 2018, to bless deserving families in Tijuana, Mexico with two 16 x 20 single-story homes in just one day, in collaboration with International Relief Teams (IRT) (https://www.irteams.org/project/newhomes-new-beginnings) and Project Mercy. Consider in your prayers how you can support this house building mission in any of the following ways: PRAY for the families affected by poverty and injustice: More than 51 percent of people in Mexico live in poverty and do not have enough resources to meet basic needs of food, shelter, education, clothing or public transportation. Just across the border in Tijuana and Tecate, many families live in shacks and improvised shelters with dirt floors and no electricity or plumbing. DONATE to this cause: For one house, its concrete slab base, building material, and latrine/outhouse will cost us $6,000.00 (we hope to be able to build two houses [$12,000.00]). In addition, we hope to raise funds to bless the new homes with basic furnishings. Please contact Raymond if you wish to donate: rdeang@stthereseparish.org or 619.550.3305. BUILD: The max number per construction team per house is 24 people (we hope to take two teams [48 people; max capacity of the bus]). You do not have to have construction skills; but a willingness to work with a team under the guidance and direction of a professional Lead Builder from IRT. REQUIRED: Please apply for a Passport CARD early it takes about 6 to 8 weeks. An acceptable alternative is a combination of a passport-book and SENTRI card OR a passport-book and GLOBAL ENTRY card. You must be at least 12 years or older to participate if BOTH birth parents/ surviving birth parent/guardian are NOT joining their minor, a notarized waiver must be secured (which takes time to obtain) a minimum of one adult chaperone for every 3 unaccompanied minors will be ensured. To secure a spot on our building team, all necessary paperwork and a colored copy of travel document(s) is due to St. Therese Parish by Monday, Sept. 24 th. Please contact Raymond as soon as possible by email and request the paperwork for yourself and/or each family member: rdeang@stthereseparish.org I will put anyone interested on a waiting list if we exceed our quota of volunteer-builders; based on email time stamp VOLUNTEER to help coordinate: If you are willing to make follow-up calls or help with administrative tasks, please contact Raymond rdeang@stthereseparish.org to see if there is anything you might be able to contribute. All are welcome to attend an Informational Meeting on Thursday, August 2, 2018 6:30p.m. in the Social Center. As a parish community, we can provide those in need, through your generous response and support, a house they can call their home; security and peace from the elements; and perhaps more importantly, hope for a brighter future changing a family s life in a profound and significant way in just one day as WE Love God, Serve Others, Bear Fruit! If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact Raymond: rdeang@stthereseparish.org or 619.550.3305 PLEASE, Don t Delay!!! Volunteer-builders must have one of these two op ons: PASSPORT CARD- this is different from your standard passport-book. Or SENTRI or GLOBAL ENTRY card in combina on WITH your standard passport-book.
