Pastor s Notes Today s Gospel in many ways is a call to respect the dignity of man. Perhaps showing respect to one who hates us may seem a bit much. However, each human being has a progression of dignity. First is the fact that man is made in God s image. That dignity, though badly tarnished by original sin, is still something quite important. Further, God lets the rain fall both on the good and the bad in the hope that the bad will repent. With Baptism a further dignity is given to man. He becomes both a temple of the Holy Spirit and an adopted child of God. God is actually living in us, if we are in the state of grace, and He holds us so dearly that He takes us into His family. It is interesting how David still respects King Saul who is hunting him down because he is so jealous of David. Despite the fact that Saul lost the Spirit because of disobedience, David still has a respect for him because he was anointed by God to lead His people. David refuses to kill Saul even though Saul would kill him if he had the chance. The opening prayer of today s Mass asks us to ponder God s spiritual creation so we can know and do the things that please Him. Jesus is making a clear distinction between justice and vendetta. We are allowed to seek justice and it is our duty to practice justice. We are forbidden to carry out revenge or vendettas, expressions of violence or hatred. Love draws us to give the one loved his due, but Jesus is telling us that we must give more than what is due. The one who acts in the spirit of love is to show him superior to any humiliation dealt him. How do we cultivate a love of enemies that draws from the unquenchable strength of Jesus? It involves a careful analysis of the life of Christ and an understanding of the cross. It involves an understanding that nothing happens by chance. By God s design circumstances arise where we cannot always choose what is happening, but we can choose the way in which we approach what is happening. The approach is the understanding of the cross. The cross is the mystery that joins us to Jesus as He suffered. Our sufferings do not add anything to the redemptive value of the cross because nothing is lacking there. Experiencing sufferings and asking God to show us how to make sense out of them gives us a new Spirit. Living in the Spirit makes bearing anger and frustration into a movement toward justice and mercy. Obtaining this Spirit is very difficult. We must take on voluntary prayer and penance. In prayer and in penance we learn that God loves us totally and completely. His unconditional love depends on His loving nature, not on our goodness or failings. We make no contribution to make this happen. We can only cooperate with God s grace. Fr. Euk Scripture Meditation Mark 1:9-11 - It happened in those days that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. On coming up out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from the heavens, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. Jesus enters the Jordan to be baptized by John, we know that Jesus was sinless because He is the Son of God and did not need to be baptized. It was a time of sinfulness and sadness in the world and Jesus, Word Made Flesh, took upon Himself our sins and the sins of all humanity. He became the bearer of our sins, in order to open the gates of heaven, setting us free and allowing us to have a relationship with God the Father. It was a time of purification and cleansing of humanity. Just as we are purified and become a new creation at our own baptism. Today we face hard times with the sad news of clergy sex abuse, hard to believe, painful and sad. The Church (Christ) has now taken on the sins of man in order to purify the Church. This is a time of purification, a time of cleansing to rebuild the Church into a new creation. But just as in the past, it is you the faithful that will uphold the Church, by having faith and trust in Christ, and remembering His promise that evil will not prevail against it and He will protect it to the end of time. Let's remain strong and faithful, standing by Jesus' promise, so that we too will hear God's saying, you are my behold child, with you I am well pleased. Deacon Gino
