When Lazarus came out of the tomb, Jesus instructed his family and friends to untie the bandages that bound him. God still depends on us to free others so they might live. APRIL 10, 2011 PAGE 5 SCRIPTURE REFLECTION... 5th Sunday of Lent With Easter coming so late this year much of the natural world in the country has already begun to come back to life. The seasonal death that began in the northern hemisphere back in September is already well on its way to reversal as we enter more deeply into spring. The grip of winter's cold is being broken as bud break begins to overtake trees and vines and bulbs push up their leaves and buds through the thawing earth. The seasons come and go with such regularity, that we have no doubt about their inevitable cycle. Life renews itself in its persistent return as is readily seen in the sprouting seeds that only came to be through the death of the parent plant. Human death is not met with such easy renewal. Christianity's belief in a personal soul does not harbor a belief in reincarnation. One physical birth and one spiritual birth (baptism) is enough for us. But we do believe in the resurrection of the dead and the power of God to restore life. The raising of Lazarus is a concrete manifestation of the power of God to save. Lazarus, who was in the tomb for four days, is called forth by Jesus. And Jesus tells the onlookers to unbind Lazarus and let him go. The Gospel today reflects all the grief and pathos that the death of a loved one can engender in the human heart. The death of Lazarus touched not only Martha and Mary and the people of Bethany. Jesus himself was moved with sadness. But as he indicates to Martha, everyone who believes in him will never die, for he is the resurrection and the life. Yes, we will experience physical death, and we will not return as easily as the cycle of the seasons. But that cycle does remind us that life is persistent. And our faith tells us that life will win out, even over death. 2011 Liturgical Publications Inc READINGS FOR THE WEEK... The Great Western Schism Jesus guaranteed that He would always be with His Church. At times, however, mere men have caused His Church great difficulty. Just as Christ is always with each of us in our difficult times, so, too, Jesus has guided His Church when it seemed as if the gates of hell might prevail against it. (Matt.16:18). The Eastern Schism, the Babylonian Captivity of the Church, and The Great Western Schism are names that history books use as they refer back in time to some of those difficult times in the first fifteen centuries when Christ s Church continued only because of Jesus guarantee of His help. COME LISTEN TAKE HOME NEW INSIGHTS INTO OUR CHURCH S ANCIENT TRADITIONS AND DIFFICULTIES AND JESUS ABIDING LOVE. MONDAY, APRIL 11, at 7 p.m. in the ST. MARGARET MARY ROOM OF THE RECTORY PRE-BAPTISM CLASS If you are expecting the birth of your first child, or have already welcomed a first child into your family, we invite you to attend our next Pre-Baptism Class Sunday, April 17, at 1 p.m. in Mary s Room. Please pre-register by calling the Parish Office (216.382.7601) April 14. Thank you.

PAGE 6 SCHOOL NEWS... Principal s Corner Our last school Stations of the Cross is Tuesday, April 12, at 2 p.m. On Holy Thursday, April 21, students will participate in a Day of Reflection. This special day will contain an in-school Stations of the Cross, a dedicated silence time, and a breaking of bread ceremony. As we get closer to the end of Easter we ask our students to reflect on these two questions and thoughts: Are you angry with anyone? Pray for peace in your heart and for forgiveness; and How will you care for someone today? Jesus cares for us, His sheep, and we care for each other. Something to think about after Lent, too. Grade 2 will experience Jesus Day this Friday, April 15, as they continue to prepare themselves for the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. Their day consists of prayer, song, reflection, crafts and bread making. Please keep them in your prayers. All students in grades3-8 are scheduled to go to Confession before Easter. This week the most improved students in each room will be treated to lunch at McDonald s. This is a reward for their strong effort to improve their report card grades. A couple of faculty members and I plan to accompany them to McDonald s to have lunch with them. Also, we have the PTC sponsored Walk-About event. Sponsors paid for the students to do a 30-40 minute walk around our campus area. Besides raising money this also gives them a physical fitness boost. Students of grades 5 and 7 are going on a music field trip to Severance Hall on the April 14. Also this week grades 3, 5, & 7 will be completing tests on writing proficiency.
