St James the Great, Hanslope and SS Simon & Jude, Castlethorpe Organist & Director of Music

Background SETTING St James the Great, Hanslope and SS Simon & Jude, Castlethorpe are parish churches at the heart of two friendly villages in North Buckinghamshire situated mid-way between Milton Keynes and Northampton. Both churches are rooted in a sacramental and Eucharistic tradition seeking to share the good news of Jesus Christ with this generation. The two churches have both experienced numerical growth over the last fifteen years and in 2008 brought the singers of the two churches together to form a Benefice Choir. Generally, the desire has been to offer the very best we can in terms of the worship of the church, by fostering high standards of liturgy, preaching and music. Our outgoing Organist & Director of Music stepped down in June after ten years service and the two PCCs are now looking to engage an enthusiastic Organist & Director of Music who can further develop our musical life, and thereby contribute to the wider mission of the parish. CHURCH Both churches are Grade 1 listed mediaeval buildings. St James spire, the tallest in the county, is a local landmark and is visible for many miles. SS Simon & Jude is set within a scheduled ancient monument, the remains of a motte and bailey castle, in the heart of Castlethorpe. PEOPLE The Parish is led by The Revd Canon Gary Ecclestone SSC, who took up the post in May 2003. Fr Gary is supported by the Churchwardens, two PCCs and retired colleagues Fr Robert Nokes and Fr Robin Carter SSC along with other members of the local chapter of the Society of the Holy Cross as required. Fr Gary is also Area Dean of Newport. The Electoral Roll of the two churches is currently around 240 and the Sunday average attendance is between 100-120 with quite a good spread of ages involved in church life.

SUNDAY WORSHIP The benefice stands liturgically in the Catholic tradition of the Church of England, and displays the hallmarks of the tradition, including the wearing of Eucharistic vestments, and the reservation and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and at St James, incense is used on a number of high days and holy days. On Sunday mornings, Mass is Sung at 9.30am at Castlethorpe and 11.00am at Hanslope using a modern language rite. The Mass setting used at the moment is Dom Gregory Murray in Ordinary Time and a number of other resources in the liturgical seasons. The choir at Hanslope, and a Cantor at Castlethorpe, sing a responsorial psalm. It is envisaged that the new Organist might work to introduce additional Mass settings over time. Hymns are currently taken from Celebration Hymnal for Everyone, with other resources being used on occasions when special service sheets are in use. There is no regular commitment to Sunday evening worship, save currently for a Harvest Evensong and a Christmas Carol Service. OTHER SERVICES The Parish keeps Principal Feasts (Solemnities) on their proper days, and often tries to keep them with added solemnity with a Joint Parishes Sung Mass to which the Benefice Choir contributes an anthem. In the past this has included: an Advent Carol Service; Christmas Eve and Day (25 th December); the Epiphany (6 th January); Candlemas (2 nd February); Ash Wednesday; Ascension Day; Pentecost; Corpus Christi; St James the Great (Sunday nearest July 25 th ); the Assumption (15th August); SS Simon & Jude (Sunday nearest 28 th October); and All Souls Day (2 nd November); as well as the Sacred Triduum (Maundy Thursday to Easter Day inclusive). There is an annual parish carol service on the Sunday before Christmas Eve (usually Advent IV). Special services that require an organist are also held occasionally and could be developed. Christmas (additional carol and Christingle services), and other services may develop as we continue to mould and shape the parish s liturgical life.

WEDDINGS AND FUNERALS There are a steady flow of weddings and funerals each year for which the Director of Music could play if they wished. MUSICAL RESOURCES Since our Director of Music stepped down the parish has relied upon a number of local musicians to play for services, these individuals would all be willing to continue to provide support when the new organist is away on leave, and some are able to cover for weddings and funerals should the new organist not be available. Our previous Director of Music is also willing to assist on an ad hoc basis too if required. At present there is a group of some sixteen choir members who sing regularly as their commitments allow. At Castlethorpe the 9.30am Sung Mass usually has a cantor for the Responsorial Psalm whilst at Hanslope at 11.00am there are typically 6-10 members of the choir to sing the psalm and lead the singing generally. The choir does not robe. In June the choir sang for the Parish Priest s Nuptial Mass

OUR VISION The Vicar and PCCs share a vision that we need an enthusiastic Organist and Director of music who will further develop our musical life. The successful applicant will contribute to the mission of the parish by maintaining and developing high standards of liturgical worship through excellent musicianship. He/she will play the church organ, direct and build up our Benefice Choir, seek ways of using music to further the mission and growth of the church, and promote the parish as a place of excellence in music within the local area. Our new organist will understand the importance we attach to music as part of our parish life, and be self-motivated in working in our particular setting, using the resources we have, to the best of his/her ability and the furtherance of our mission, serving God, the people of Hanslope & Castlethorpe, and the wider area. This post might be suitable for a job share and we are very open to exploring that possibility with candidates.
