Island in the Son UNITED METHODIST CHURCH March 3 IITS Offering To Help Liberian Sewing Mission Our March 3 communion offering will go to a sewing school in Liberia, Africa, sponsor ed by the Rev. Jan Foulk, a r etir ed UMC minister and winter Texan at IITS. Liberian women face many obstacles in their daily lives, including poverty, violence, and lack of sanitary conditions. They have little opportunity to obtain education, employment, and self-confidence. Many don t know where to turn. In 2010, Rev. Faulk went on a mission tr ip to Liber ia, and through her observation and discussions, she decided to sponsor a sewing school to give young women usable skills. CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS Graduates from the program receive a new $150 treadle sewing machine. Thus, they can use their skills to provide for their families, Rev. Faulk said. Over 60 women have finished the program and have hope for a better future. Jan supplied thr ee photos of students with their treadle sewing machines treadle because of scarce electricity. The additional photos show the location of Liberia on the continent of Africa and some of the beauty of the countryside.
