A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC WEEK OF SEPT. 27-OCT. 3, 2015 SAINTS, SPECIAL OBSERVANCES, MASS INTENTIONS AND PARISH EVENTS Jesus replied, Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me (Mk.9) Dear Parishioners and Ministers: All of us, as Catholics living in the United States, are rejoicing and strengthening our faith by the visit of Pope Francis. Our computers, our TV and our smartphones have become the vehicles for us to watch the Pope s live events in Washington DC, New York, and Philadelphia. Last Wednesday morning at the White House, Pope Francis said the following statement concerning our freedom and duties, and he reminded each one of us of our duties as Catholics and citizens: Mr. President, together with their fellow citizens, American Catholics are committed to building a society which is truly tolerant and inclusive, to safeguarding the rights of individuals and comminutes, and to rejecting every form of unjust discrimination, With countless other people of good will, they are likewise concerned that efforts to build a just and wisely ordered society respect their deepest concerns and the right to religious liberty. That freedom reminds one of America s most precious possessions. And as my brothers, the United States Bishops, have reminded us, all are called to be vigilant, precisely as good citizens, to preserve and defend that freedom from everything that would threaten or compromise it. The Church Patio Construction-Seeking for Some Financial Relief of $35, 000.00 As we announced at all the masses last Sunday, our patio is undergoing some major repairs and renovation in order to be in compliance with the building code of the City of Los Angeles. First, the city requires a new firewall to the constructed to separate church from the room adjacent to it. Second, because of fire code, the patio c over has to be eight feet (8 ft.) away from the parish office. The four posts supporting the patio have to be redone. This project ordeal has been on going for more than 3 years. As of today, the accumulated cost has been very expensive, which is approximately more than $35, 000 ranging from architectural fees, city permits, and production cost. I am turning to all and specifically to you for some financial relief of the project. If you are able to assist and defray some of the cost of this project, I would greatly appreciate your support. Any amount is acceptable. The Call and The Cost Last Sunday, I reflected on our calling in life to be a teacher, doctor, engineer, parent and a disciple of Jesus: the meaning and purpose. Living life. We also need to ask the question of the cost. What will it cost me to be who I am and what I do in life? We are living in a culture that focuses more on the cost and calculate the call than the mission or the ministry of the calling. From the scriptural reading I shared with you the following: 1. The calling is to embrace the gift of wisdom and to cultivate peace as found in James 3. 2. The calling also invites us to be last and servant of all. 3. The cost is to let go of our own evil passion such ambition and jealousy. 4. The cost is not to be the greatest of all. Be on Time-Coming to Sunday Mass 75% Goal for Our Parish. WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH OUR PRODIGAL GOD We keep having to relearn how prodigal God is. It is as if God cannot quite manage to say no. We think it is surely fine when God is prodigal with us rich in mercy and forgiveness, generous in grace. But what about the other the enemy, the sinner, the heretic, the outsider? Well, we expect God to be as stingy with that person as we are. Moses and Joshua wanted such a cozy world, too. They wondered how the spirit of God could be given to the two who did not show up at the meeting tent today s church. And the apostles in the Gospel complained because there were some miracle workers who were clearly not followers of Jesus. God s great free wheeling generosity confounded them all. Let this be, says Jesus. Just see to it that you who lead continue to be worthy of your calling. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Lorenzo Ruiz was a layman, married, and had two sons and a daughter. Born in Binondo, Manila, about 1600's, he was educated in the school of the Dominicans there. He served as an altar boy and later was a helper and clerk-sacristan in the church of Binondo. He was a member of the Confraternity of the Rosary. He made his living probably as a calligrapher, one who renders documents in beau ful penmanship for private or official use. To be sure, that work denoted an accomplished and educated person, especially at a me when many an illustrious personage were far from excelling in this art. An adverse event made him leave the Philippines in 1636. When he was in his late twen es or early thir es, he became involved or was accused of being involved in a criminal case, the circumstances of which are far from clear. Whether he was involved or not, one thing was clear, he was afraid that, as a consequence of a trial or mistrial, he might be given a death sentence. Upon landing in Japan where Chris ans were being persecuted, he was arrested and imprisoned together with his companions. He underwent inhuman tortures and valiantly confessed his Chris an Faith. Refusing to renounce his Faith, he told his execu oner that he was ready to die for God and give himself for many thousands of lives if he had them. On September 27, 1637, he was hung from a gallows by his feet, his body falling into a pit. A er two days of agony, he died of bleeding and suffoca on. His body was cremated and the ashes thrown into the sea. He and fi een companions, martyred in the same persecu on, were bea fied by Pope John Paul II in Manila on February 18, 1981 and elevated to full honors of the altar by canoniza on on October 18, 1987 in Rome. Their feast day is on September 28th. From Catholic.org
PARISH & SCHOOL LIFE: MINISTRY, EVENTS & REMINDERS STEWARDSHIP 2015 Time Talent TREASURE God is inviting us to joyful life of selfless generosity. Generosity is at the heart of the Christian life just as it is at the heart of the Gospel. It is often through our generosity that we are able to bring the love of God to life for others in very real and tangible ways. God is by his very nature generous. God wants to convince us of his generosity, and in turn wants us to live generous lives. Stewardship is the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one s care. As Christians, we are taught that our time, talent and treasure are all on loan to us from God. Are you a good steward of what God has entrusted to you? Are you ready to take the challenge?
