Page 2 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time During a coffee break at a 2006 bishops conference at the Va can, the future Pope Francis, then-cardinal Bergoglio, congratulated his fellow bishop Donald Wuerl on his appointment as archbishop of Washington. As Cardinal Wuerl tells it, Bergoglio said, Washington That s the capital of your country, right? Since then, one assumes that Pope Francis has familiarized himself a bit more with the U.S., but it s a sure thing that his first visit to our country will hold many surprises both for him and us. On Tuesday, September 22nd, Pope Francis lands in Washington D.C. for his weeklong papal visit. During his stay, he will of course address the powerful and the connected, being the first Pon ff ever to address a joint session of Congress. Immediately a erward, he has lunch on the street with homeless, mentally ill and immigrant clients of Catholic Chari es. The day a er he offers Mass at the Basilica Cathedral in Philadelphia and visits a local prison. According to sources, it s also possible that, with his characteris c spontaneity, he may find a way to break free from his handlers to meet and spend even more me with the poor. But don t expect a purely social visit. He has an agenda. That s why he s coming. He s made no secret of his concern for consumerism, unfe ered capitalism and all forms of exploita on. So while his charm offensive may disarm, trust me when I tell you that his message will both enthrall and challenge, some mes deeply. For those who want to share this extraordinary experience together with fellow parishioners, we will be se ng up a live feed in the church throughout his visit from his official papal i nerary. Times listed are Pacific, not Eastern. Obviously, we cannot broadcast all events because of our church schedule, but these are the ones we plan to show here: Tuesday, September 22 at 12:45 pm Pope Francis arrives in Washington, D.C. beginning his first papal visit to the U.S. Wednesday, September 23 at 12:30 pm Mass and Canoniza on of Blessed Junipero Serra Thursday, September 24 at 12:45 pm Departure from Washington, D.C. Thursday, September 24 at 3:15 pm Vespers with Clergy and Religious Friday, September 25 at 8:30 am (Parish Hall) Interreligious Service at Ground Zero Friday, September 25 at 2:15 pm Mass from Madison Square Garden **Please note: all times are tentative and subject to change. Times listed are published schedule for TV coverage, not actual times for Mass. Check www.etwn.com for the latest dates/times.
