Mahavir Jayanti Program Recap By Dilip Jain The Mahavir Jayanti was celebrated with the usual enthusiasm on April 12, 2009. Swapna Boli is a major and very important part of fundraising by the temple. About 50% of the cost of running the temple on a yearly basis is pledged through Swapna Boli. We continued the format started a couple of years ago to speed up the process. Eleven Swapnas and all the malas were allowed to pledge via silent boli and the rest of the Swapana boli along with Aarti Mangal Divo were performed at the time of the ceremony. The success of the program is evident from the record pledges received this year during the boli. In another first, the EC requested members to RSVP if they plan to attend the Mahavir Jayanti program. The results were encouraging in that RSVP for 190 people were received. The actual attendance was closer to 325. This helps to make sure that the arrangements, specially dining arrangements, are made for adequate number of attendees. The EC plans to continue this practice to other events. Pathshala children prepared many items for you. The Dreams of Trishla dioramas, posters and other projects prepared by the students were displayed at the dinner hall. Their hard work was whole heartedly appreciated by the visitors. Graduating seniors were presented with certificates and gifts. The graduating seniors recounted their experiences growing up with Pathshala, how it has shaped their lives, and how they plan to use what they have learnt in their college and professional lives. The Khasgiwala trust presented awards to participants in the competition for the outgoing seniors (see details elsewhere in the newsletter). The South Zone arranged food for the program. The food was catered from a vegetarian restaurant. We thank Prity Turakhia, Dhira Mehta, Jyotsana Shah for coordinating this activity. Make a Pledge and become a Distinguish Gold Donor Ayambil Tapcharya Observed at the JCGB Temple By Mita Shah The Ayambil Tapcharya for one day was observed on April 5 th by 15 members. It was a Tapacharya with enthusiasm. There were so many novelty and gourmet Ayambil items to eat, many of us did not have to force ourselves to eat those ayambil items. Congratulations to Nisha Gosalia, Dhira Mehta, and Lalitaben Shah for observing the entire nine days of Ayambil Oli. Our thanks to those spouses, who did not observe the ayambil, but they were there to help and serve. Also thanks to Ranjanben and Lalitaben for their efforts in organizing this bi-annual event years after years. Money was also collected to buy some needed items for the temple instead of prabhavana. Make sure you all join us next time in September 2009. Remember~~ Change in the locking system at the Jain Center Many of you are aware that there has been a change in the locking system at the Jain Center. DR. ASHA KHASGIWALA & FAMILY TRUST 2009 ESSAY COMPETITION By Dharmaraj Khot This year the Khasgiwala Family again sponsored a religious essay competition program for the graduating students of our Pathshala Level 5B students. This is the second year in a row that the Khasgiwala Family has sponsored this program. The primary purpose of this program is to encourage the study of Jain philosophy and principles among the students of JGCB Pathshala. Building upon the success of the last year, the students of Level 5B were asked to write an essay on the Tattvas (the Fundamentals) providing their own understanding of the subject. Students were given a period of about 2 and half months to prepare their essays. Our Level 5B students enthusiastically participated in the essay competition by writing their perspectives and understanding of the subject. The evaluation of essays was performed in two steps Step 1 Grading of essays by three judges; and Step 2 Conducting an interview of the candidates. All the students performed very well in their essays. Students understanding and knowledge was very well reflected in their interviews. The judges were impressed by students knowledge, communication and inclination to learn the subject matter. The recognition awards were distributed to the student during the Mahavir Jayanti Function at the hands of our respected community member Shri Ratibhai Dodhia of Lincoln, RI. The recognition awards included a certificate of participation and a financial award for participating in the program. We would like to congratulate the following students for their contribution and well- deserved recognition during the Mahavir Jayanti Program: Nupur Jain Rahul Jain Niral Mehta Naman Shah Umang Jain Niti Shah We thank Khasgiwala Family for making such a wonderful opportunity available to our Pathashala students. Our thanks also go to Dr. Chandra Khasgiwala, Rajesh Mehta and Kamal Shah for coordinating, organizing and making this program a successful event. Pathshala News by: Mamta Mehta Jai Jinendra, Mahavir Jayanti celebration was started by Namokar mantra sung by Little stars from Mommy and Me, Rookies. We have six students graduating. The graduating students were asked to prepare a speech about their experience at JCGB Pathshala with a promise to follow Jain Way of Life as they start their journey beyond high school. Speeches by graduating students were the highlight of the occasion. We thank Pradipbhai and Nishaben Gosalia for the pictures and VinaTeli for the certificates presented to the graduating students. Displays put by students from Level 1,2,3,4 at the dinner hall were remarkable. Kids also took efforts to explain their projects. We are very proud of each and every one. On behalf of entire pathshala teachers team I want to thank all the parents and kids. 5
