The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 31 July 2016 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Desk of Sister Theresa Agliardi, RSM -- During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, much emphasis has been placed upon God s mercy toward us and the call for us to be merciful to one another. In Misericordiae Vultus : The Face of Mercy, the actual letter whereby Pope Francis called for the Year of Mercy, he tells us that Jesus introduces us to the works of mercy in his preaching so we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples.. Since 1831, when Mother Catherine McAuley founded the Sisters of Mercy, in Dublin Ireland, the Charism ( gift) of my religious congregation has been MERCY. Revealing the compassion of God has been the primary focus and purpose of our ministries, with Catherine McAuley telling her sisters that she wanted them to be the kindest people on the face of the earth. As I reflect upon my ministry here at St. Luke, I pray that my service to the parish community reflects compassion and kindness, especially to people in times of suffering and need. My ministry to those who have suffered the death of a loved one, through our Bereavement Group and individual bereavement counseling affords me the opportunity to support and encourage those whose lives are deeply affected by grief as they journey toward healing and hope. I am happy to assist our Consolation Ministers as they attempt to lighten the burden of loss felt by parishioners as they plan funerals for their loved ones, sharing the love and concern of the parish community at this difficult time. The visitation of parishioners who are sick and homebound allows me to be a source of compassion and care to them while my coordination of our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who faithfully visit our many sick parishioners at home and in The Grand Rehabilitation Center and Nursing Home provides the chance to encourage them in their very important ministry. Another main focus of my pastoral ministry is our Infant Baptism Program which provides me the happy opportunity of personally meeting all the parents desiring baptism for their children before providing instruction for them as they accept the responsibility of raising their children in the faith. My experiences in the Baptism Program have been a source of great JOY and many blessings for me. Faith Sharing Sessions during Advent and Lent, participation on the Pastoral Council and other parish groups and committees, allow me to share faith and encourage discipleship among our parishioners. As I look back over some of the aspects of my ministry, I hope that I am revealing God s Mercy to the best of my ability and that in the end, I pray that Catherine McAuley would find me one of the kindest people. In closing, I recall the cherished words of the Prayer of St. Teresa of Avila: Christ has no body now on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ s compassion is to look out to the world. Yours are the feet with which Christ is to go about doing good. Yours are the hands with which Christ is to bless all people. Blessings and peace, Sister Theresa Page 1

Summer Mission Appeal - August 6 & 7 Next weekend please welcome our visiting priest, Rev. Albert Adeleke of Ijebu-Ode Diocese, Nigeria. Ijebu-Ode Diocese is located in the Western part of Nigeria, near Lagos. Ijebu-Ode Diocese is a rural but growing Diocese. Her population is predominantly Muslim; 50% Muslims, 25% Christians of other denominations, 15% of Catholics and 10% of Traditional African believers. The Diocese has 32 parishes with over 150 churches, 7 houses of formation, 12 religious houses for male and female religious groups. The Catholic population does not have enough material and financial resources to sustain her many developing programs of evangelization; sustenance of priest and religious, training of seminarians, and to sustain primary health care project for the villagers. Please let us warmly welcome Rev. Albert and let us be as generous as possible to his Mission Diocese. SAINT LUKE SCHOOL OF RELIGION Our Religious Education serves children in Grades 1-8 who are attending public or non-catholic private schools. To re-register for classes beginning September 2016 you can download a Re-Registration Form from the parish website at www.stlukewhitestone.org or stop by the Rectory Office during office hours. Please Remember the Parish during vacation -- Your continued financial support of the parish is so very important especially during the summer months with many of our parishioners taking well deserved vacations. As you well know, however, bills never take a vacation! So it is also for the parish. So...please send in your envelopes for the weeks you are away when you return. Your support in this way is greatly appreciated and needed. The Winning 50/50 Ticket Number From Our Carnival Is 00277 Please contact the rectory if you are the holder of the winning ticket! The prize must be claimed by JULY 31, 2016. To Fran Molinari and the Fashion Show Committee for their hard work and dedication to the success of the St. Luke School 10th Annual Fashion Show which was held on Friday, April 22nd at Jericho Terrace. We are pleased to announce that a total of $21,000 was raised from this event. We are most grateful to all those who supported this important fundraiser! ALTAR CARE The celebration of the Eucharist is at the center of parish life. We are a Eucharistic Community. Liturgical Ministers assist the priest and community in this celebration - Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers, Music Ministers, Altar Servers. Yet, we often overlook another important ministry - those who care for the altar linens. Although not seen at the liturgy itself, these women keep the altar linens clean and worthy of use at the altar. They wash and iron linens and keep them in good condition. These dedicated women are always looking for volunteers. Their ministry is done at home, taking the soiled linens and returning them to the sacristy ready for use. To volunteer, please call the rectory. Page 3

St. Luke Parish is very fortunate to have Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who are devoted to the sick and homebound, some in their own homes and some in The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Whitestone. The ministers are very generous with their time as they visit the sick and homebound praying with them and bringing them holy communion. If you know someone who is in need of a minister s visit with holy communion, please contact Sister Theresa at (718) 746-8531 or (718) 746-8102 and arrangements will be made as soon as possible.
