From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers In our discussion of discipleship we have mentioned practical ways to grow as missionary disciples of Jesus Christ: a spirituality of encounter, a spirituality of communion, and prayer that forms us in Christ and His Church. Adding to that list, we now include formation in scripture and apologetics. St. Jerome said that ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ. It is important for us to open ourselves to the two fonts of revelation: Tradition and Scripture. Scripture flowed out of Tradition. It was the Church that brought the books of the Bible together and discerned, in the power of the Spirit, those writing that were inspired directly by God. To understand Scripture correctly, we must understand it in the development of Tradition in the heart of the Church. The historical-critical method is an important tool to understand the literal sense of Scripture, from which we can move more deeply into the spiritual sense. Lectio Divina, mentioned last week, brings Scripture deeply into our hearts and souls. We need to know and experience Scripture so that we can be formed by it and bear witness to it correctly. We also need to understand the teachings of the Church, those things revealed by God in oral Tradition. The Church has a great intellectual patrimony. Apologetics is the art of presenting reasoned arguments to support something, typically a theory or religious doctrine. The doubts people raise when they question the Church or question faith are usually not new. They are repeated often. It is important that disciples of Jesus be ready to respond to such questions with well-formed minds and heart. Bishop Barron instructs that a new apologetics is needed today, one that seeks to lovingly use all the intellectual tools available in the rich history of the Church. A new apologetics would utilize Augustine, Aquinas, Bonaventure, Newman, Chesterton, John of the Cross and many, many others in order to meet the intellectual objections to the faith that continue to arise (Barron). Such an expression of the faith also needs to understand the strains of hostility to the faith within the contemporary culture. It would understand, for instance, the roots of today s objections to religion in Nietzsche, Feuerbach, Marx, Sartre, Freud and their disciples. It would seek to know the enemies of the faith better than they know themselves (Barron). It is important to remember, however, that we are called to be witnesses, not just teachers. We are called to witness to our own encounter with Christ in the heart of His Church. Therefore, this expression must offer hope and joy: We must be warriors for Catholicism, but only happy warriors are finally successful in this sort of struggle (Barron). To be free to offer hope and joy obediently from the heart of the Church requires growth in human formation, growth in holiness, and a mature sense of obedience. Grace builds on nature. We must look at our own unfreedoms, those aspects of ourselves that diminish our humanity, for they hinder our growth in holiness. Scripture speaks about evil people and evil is real. Darkness is real. Just as darkness is the lack of light, so evil is the lack of good. Human beings are made in the image and likeness of God and are, in their deepest core, good. However, when sin, woundedness, and psychological dysfunction take root in us, they limit our humanity there is a lack, and in that lack can be found real evil. This is why we have spoken so much in the past six years about the importance of growing in the human virtues (also called the cardinal virtues), about looking at psychological deterrents to growth in the spiritual life, about moving beyond vice, about humility and the importance of walking in the light of truth, about obedience, about joy, about freedom, and about applying these themes to the various stages of life. The Heavenly Father, in His tremendous care for us, desires our freedom - He desires that we all attain to the unity of faith and knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the extent of the full stature of Christ (Ephesians 4:13). To live as disciples and missionaries of Jesus Christ we must open ourselves to a spirituality of encounter and communion. This is only possible by entering into ecclesial prayer and opening ourselves to Scripture and the Tradition of the Church, humbly allowing ourselves to be formed in human growth, holiness, and obedience.
