Term 3 / Week 7 Thursday 1st September. 2016 News From Scott Dear Parents and Caregivers, I had the great pleasure of hosting the Voice of Youth Speech Cluster Final at Trinity last Thursday. This competition is open to all Year Six students in our diocese and is a major component of our literacy program for our senior students. In my opinion, the greatest aspect of this competition is its purpose - of giving our young people a chance to have their voice heard about the issues that matter to them. Can you imagine a greater measure of success for your child than having them feel empowered enough to compose and share their views and opinions confidently in the presence of their peers and teachers? What amazes me is the poise, confidence and power with which the children deliver their speeches. I cannot imagine having that type of confidence when I was in Grade Six, let alone the talent and interest to compose the quality speeches I was entertained with last week. I headed home last Thursday feeling very optimistic about the future ahead. Having shared in what our young students look and sound like at the height of their expressive powers, I wondered if I may have just witnessed a future Prime Minister, journalist or community leader. What a great reward for the investment that home and school have made in our children. Staffing News For the last four weeks of this term and the first week of next term, Olga is taking Long Service Leave. During this time Celia Carroll has been appointed as Acting Religious Education Coordinator. On your behalf I wish her well in this role and thank her for stepping up to do the work for our kids. NAPLAN We have received the data results for Years 3 and 5 NAPLAN and the learning performance reflects very well on the hard work of the students and teachers at Trinity. Voice of Youth On the 25th August, Jamie, Matthew and Ashton had the opportunity to compete in the Voice of Youth Cluster Final at Trinity. This is where you write a speech on a topic of your choice and deliver it to your peers. We learned many interesting facts about a variety of topics, including World Peace, Computer Technology and Racism. We all appreciated the opportunity to represent Trinity in this competition. Matthew Fava Sports News Last Friday representatives from Trinity participated in the Diocesan athletics carnival at Rooty Hill. Sacred Space It was wonderful to have all three communities come together for the Year of Mercy and pray together at Our Cross of Mercy and Relics of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and Blessed Teresa of Kolkata, who will be canonised this Sunday, 4 th September. It was a wonderful time to renew our call to be Faces of Mercy to all we meet and in our stewardship of the environment. Being a Face of Mercy is an action of mercy our school community is committed to undertaking after the Year of Mercy ends. Our prayer and commitment is to firstly open our hearts to those living on the remotest fringes of society. Furthermore, we chose to strengthen our existing initiatives that embraces the spirit of the Year of Mercy, but will build upon them and pursue a new initiative that goes beyond Justice and incorporates MERCY. An initiative which expresses God s way of reaching out to the sinner, offering a new chance to look at self, convert, and believe. Therefore, we at Trinity will work with grace and love to make sure we truly share in the Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy, especially feeding the hungry and praying for the living and the dead. Over the next few weeks we will celebrate a number of great events in the Church. September 4 th is the canonisation Blessed Teresa of Kolkata. An Albanian woman who was born in Skopje, then part of the Kosovo Vilayet in the Ottoman Empire. I feel honoured and privileged to have been in the presence of this modern day saint during one of her many visits to Australia. There are many great things she has said and done. In this year of Mercy one of her greatest saying that resonates strongly is, If you cannot feed 100, then feed just one. Thursday 8 th September is the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Let us remember to pray to Mary to intercede for us, to bring peace to our world and our lives. May Mary who willingly and unreservedly said YES to God s call, help us answer his call to be a Face of Mercy to everyone we meet as we journey through life.
