ORDER OF WORSHIP 2 nd. Sunday of Lent, March 17 th 2019 10:30 am *Invites you to stand, as you are able You are invited to say or sing the bold print PREPARATION & PRAYER MUSICAL PRELUDE: Lenten Medley MARILYN REESOR WELCOME, BIRTHDAYS, ANNIVERSARIES & ANNOUNCEMENTS How are you today? We are blessed and highly favoured. ACKNOWLEDGING THE LAND: This morning, like many mornings, we gather in this place, built by the work of our ancestors on the traditional lands of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), Ojibway/Chippewa & Anishinabek First Nations. We give thanks for all people, especially the First Nations of this land, for their grace and willingness to share, and pray that we will continue to work to build and deepen right relationship of mutual respect and love, today and always. LIGHTING OF CHRIST S CANDLE (Sung response I am the Light of the World VU# 87, chorus) 'I am the light of the world! You people come and follow me!' If you follow and love you'll learn the mystery of what you were meant to do and be.

PASSING OF THE PEACE: The light of Christ will enlighten us to love and live together in community. The Peace of Christ be with you. And also with you! CENTERING WORDS: God of our Lenten days and journey. We worship you with deep, deep humility. We worship you searching for peace We worship you in faith community We worship you looking to Jesus and to his Lenten journey (Inspired by Responsive Prayers Year C David Sparks) *HYMN: VU#327 All Praise to Thee (vv. 1, 4-5) 1 All praise to thee, for thou, O King divine, didst yield the glory that of right was thine, that in our troubled hearts thy grace might shine: hallelujah; hallelujah! 4 Wherefore, by God's eternal purpose, thou art high exalted o'er all creatures now, and given the name to which all knees shall bow: hallelujah; hallelujah! 5 Let every tongue confess with one accord in heaven and earth that Jesus Christ is Lord; and God eternal be by all adored: hallelujah; hallelujah! REFLECTIVE PRAYER (Remembering The Journey of Jesus to Jerusalem) SINE NOMINE SUNG RESPONSE: MV# 118 Me Alone, Me Alone One: Me alone, me alone in-a the wilderness. (2x) All: Forty days and forty nights in-a the wilderness (2x) JAMAICAN

PEACE & THE WORD SILENCE HYMN: VU#664 What a Friend We Have in Jesus Collier s Kids are invited to gather as the hymn is sung for a talk and prayer. 1 What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. 2 Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer. 3 Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Christ the Saviour is our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer. Do our friends despise, forsake us? Are we tempted to despair? Jesus' strength will shield our weakness, and we'll find new courage there. FRIENDSHIP OFFERING AND CARE CARDS Offering Music: What Grace is Mine LONDONDERRY AIR

*Offering Response: VU#540 Grant Us, God, the Grace *Offering Prayer SUNG RESPONSE: #958 Halle, Halle, Halle Halle, halle, hallelujah! Halle, halle, hallelujah! Halle, halle, hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! STUTTGART CARIBBEAN BIBLE READINGS: Psalm 27 Larry Murray 1 The LORD is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. 3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. 4 One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. 5 For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock. 6 Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD. 7 Hear my voice when I call, LORD; be merciful to me and answer me. 8 My heart says of you, Seek his face! Your face, LORD, I will seek. 9 Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger; you have been my helper. Do not reject me or forsake me, God my Savior. 10 Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me. 11 Teach me your way, LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. 12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes, for false witnesses rise up against me, spouting 13 malicious accusations. I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. This is the Word of God, for the People of God. Thanks be to God.

MUSIC MINISTRY: Amazing Grace by Craig Courtney CHOIR SERMON: Prayer of Hope Hewitt Holmes OFFERING & PRAYER *HYMN: VU#674 Fight the Good Fight (vv. 1, 3-4) 1 Fight the good fight with all your might; Christ is your strength and Christ your right; lay hold on life, and it shall be your joy and crown eternally. 3 Cast care aside, lean on your guide; God's boundless mercy will provide; trust, and the trusting soul shall prove Christ is its life, and Christ its love. 4 Faint not, nor fear, God's arms are near; God changes not and you are dear. Only believe, and Christ shall be your all in all eternally. A NEW CREED (vv pg. 918) We are not alone, we live in God s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. PENTECOST

We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God s presence, to live with respect in Creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. PRAYERS FOR OTHERS Hewitt Holmes THE PRAYER OF JESUS (The Lord s Prayer Traditional) Our Father (Creator), who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever, Amen. PEOPLE ON A JOURNEY *COMMISSIONING: Obedient to Jesus, God s Chosen One, we leave this Church! We will take with us what we need for our Lenten journey; We will walk the hard road that Jesus walked,

We know we have friends from the Collier family, We know the power of prayer and meditation, We will do our best to follow Jesus into the places that deny life in all its fullness. God s love surrounds us and the Spirit remains our guide! (Responsive Prayers David Sparks Year C) *HYMN: VU#660 How Firm a Foundation 1 How firm a foundation, you servants of God, is laid for your faith in God's excellent word! What more can be said than to you has been said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? ST DENIO 2 'Fear not, I am with you; O be not dismayed! For I am your God and will still give you aid; I'll strengthen and help you, and cause you to stand, upheld by my righteous omnipotent hand. 3 'When through the deep waters I call you to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; for I will be with you, your troubles to bless, and sanctify to you your deepest distress. 4 'When through fiery trials your pathway shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be your supply: the flame shall not hurt you; I only design your dross to consume, and your gold to refine. 5 'The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose I will not - I will not desert to his foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavour to shake, I'll never - no, never - no, never forsake!'

*SENDING SONG: Go Now in Peace N. Price/D. Besig Go now in peace, never be afraid, God will go with you each hour of every day. Go now in faith, steadfast, strong and true. Know he will guide you in all you do. Go now in love, and show you believe. Reach out to others so all the world can see. God will be there watching from above.
