Biographical/Historical note William Pizzoglio was born June 27, 1904, in Sao Joao da Boa Vista, Brazil, to parents who had migrated from the Italian province of Biella. His father died when Pizzoglio was a young boy, and his mother placed him in a Sao Paulo orphanage run by Missionary Sisters of Saint Charles and the Society of Saint Charles-Scalabrinians, both of which were religious orders founded to minister to migrants. An early vocation, the ten-year-old Pizzoglio was brought to Italy to enroll in the Scalabrinians' new Scuola Apostolica in Crespano del Grappa. In 1917 he transferred to the Scalabrinians' Motherhouse in Piacenza (Emilia-Romagna) for further study. He was ordained in 1927 and immediately began teaching theology at his old school at Piacena and taking up a new study, music. In 1929 Pizzoglio was sent to the United States and worked successively as an assistant at Sacred Heart, Boston, Massachusetts, Scalabrinian parishes in Providence, Rhode Island, and Saint Anthony of Padua parish in Everett, Massachusetts. In 1932 he became pastor of Saint Mary of Mount Carmel in Utica, New York, where he helped to organize the parish's day care center. He also served as pastor of Saint Joseph's, Catherine Street, New York, New York, and as pastor of Saint Anthony's in Everett. During his years as pastor he also composed liturgical music; scores for which are among his papers. In 1968 he moved to more administrative work, serving as treaturer on Saint Charles Seminary on Staten Island. In 1972 ill health sent him to Villa Rosa Nursing Home, a Scalabrinian-run facility in Mitchellville, Maryland. He happened to be visiting Saint Charles on Staten Island when he died, on June 19, 1973. CMS.071 represents the personal papers of Father William Pizzoglio, c.s., a Brazilian-born son of Italian immigrants who came to the United States to minister to migrants there and served in a series of Catholic parishes in New York State and New England, and also as an administrator in his religious order. The papers relfect his personal life inasmuch as they include correspondence with his mother in Brazil, who lived until 1957, and his personal interests, as they include copies of his musical compositions. The papers also documnt Father Pizzoglio's work in various parishes, and thus provide a window on pastoral care in different settings. Besides the aforementioned correspondence and musical scores, the collection includes photographs documenting Pizzoglio's work in various settings, and miscellaneous documents. Some of these miscellaneous documents provide insight into Pizzoglio's own spirituality, as they include a thesis he wrote for his 1929 theology degree, and a spiritual diary he kept during his seminary days. - Page 4 -
