RIVERSIDE, OHIO MARCH 10, 2019 THE LENTEN RITUALS OF THE RCIA PROCESS Lent begins a very special time for those participating in the RCIA process, as what we call the period of Purification and Enlightenment starts the first Sunday of Lent, March 10th. This Sunday we celebrate the Rite of Sending. Our catechumen (those not yet baptized), Umit Spencer, and Candidate for Full Communion (those who are already baptized Christians and who will be confirmed and receive Holy Communion), Hillary Dukes, will receive a special blessing and be recognized by the parish. This afternoon at Immaculate Conception they will be received and blessed by Bishop Binzer. Those participating publicly in the RCIA process remind us of how very much we ourselves need to repent, to return to God, to give to others, and to strive for greater holiness in our own lives. Lent is a time to prepare ourselves spiritually to celebrate the paschal mystery. We spend Lent thirsting for the waters of Baptism; this is true whether you are anticipating baptism or have already been baptized. So, although the rituals we will see in the next four weeks are directed specifically towards the Elect (those not yet baptized), and the Candidates for Full Communion, they are really meant for all of us. In the weeks ahead we will celebrate both the Penitential Rite for our Candidate for Full Communion, as well as the Rites of Scrutiny, which are specifically intended for the Elect. More on those rites in future weeks! RIVERSIDE, OHIO MARCH 10, 2019 As part of our liturgical environment this year, we are focusing on our Lenten journey as a journey up the mountain to Easter. Mountains represent struggles and difficulties, anguish, exhaustion, pain, broken hearts, and a joyful goal in reaching the top after having given all we have, like our Lord. As we will hear in our Lenten readings, several key events take place on mountains: Moses sees the burning bush and encounters the Lord on a mountain, Jesus is tempted by the devil on a mountain, he is transfigured on a mountain, and his sweat [becomes] as drops of blood in the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives as he prays to be delivered from what is about to happen. As we carry our crosses, the mountain is a reminder of the Paschal Mystery in our lives. Please consider attending the presentations on Finding Light in Darkness offered by Dr. Sue Sack as a means of connecting the Paschal Mystery to your own life! May this representation aid in your prayer and reflection this Lent, and may the light breaking through be your joy at Easter!
