2 Welcome to St. Margaret Mary Parish (continued from previous column) From A Grateful Heart There are different kinds of spiritual gifts and different forms of service - but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual of the Spirit of God is given for the benefit of all: to one the spirit wisdom; to another, the expression of knowledge; to another, faith; or healing; to another, mighty deeds; or prophecy; to another, discernment of spirits; to another, varieties of tongues; or interpretation of tongues. The same Spirit produces them all and He gives them to each individual as he wishes. Your talents and abilities may be limited, under-developed or unknown to you as of now. But, God has prepared each of us with some gifts that are needed in our community or parish. The Church belongs to Christ and he has promised to send the Spirit. That means that the Spirit of God is here and active! Yet, we hold the gifts of the Spirit and need to lend them to the task of building the Church where we are. God knows what is needed and has provided it - in YOU (in who you ARE)! That is why Jesus told his Disciples: (Matthew 5:14) You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. The gifts God gave us in the Spirit need to be discovered, developed and used by each of us for the good of others in our community. May the Heart of The Savior Bless you! Fr. Patrick Nelson, SDS 1 Cor. 12:4-11 Gifts of the Spirit St. Paul tells the first Christians in Corinth that they are all given God s Spirit in their Baptism and coming to the faith in Jesus Christ as Messiah and the only God. However, his biggest job after that is get the early community to understand that God sent his Son to unify the human race to work towards the intended Salvation of each person created by God. No one is to be lost or abandoned. The Salvation that Jesus brings is God s desire to unify all creation to himself and the Church has the job of continuing to complete that task on Earth until all people are aware of the Salvation offered in obedience to the Word of God (Jesus Christ). That is why Jesus formed his Church beginning with the 12 Apostles as the image of the new promise to Abraham of the 12 tribes of Jacob (Israel). This is The Church on Earth! Now every Church, just as every building project, requires an army of workers with specialized talents to get the job done well. The Church is no exception. Each of us is created by God and the Spirit of God works within us to provide for the needs to build the Church in every community or parish. This is what St. Paul is trying to tell the Corinthians. They each have what this community needs to build up the Kingdom of God where they find themselves. The Spirit knows what we need and provides it in the talents, gifts and abilities of each individual. (1 Kings 19:13) Just as when Elijah met God at Mount Horeb, not every gift of God comes in a grand way. Sometimes God comes in a soft breeze or in a gentle touch of a friend. Just as when I was discerning my call to the priesthood at the age of 47. I wanted a sign and what I got was the affirmation of others three times (Father, Son and Spirit). God has his own ways of communicating with us and if we are willing to listen we will hear him! (continued next column) Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children Let us pray... Good and gracious God, you blew into our nostrils the breath of life. You are the One to whom we owe our very existence. Give us the courage to take that unpopular position of protecting those who have no voice, the unborn child in the womb to the person taking his or her last breath. The life you have given us is a gift beyond measure. Embolden us to speak the truth about protecting the child, the elderly, and the one without a voice in the public square. With thankful hearts, we ask all this of the One God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
