PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH Evangelical Lutheran Synod NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD CHURCH STAFF Pastor Hartwig: 507-382-6826 Email: pastorhartwig@gmail.com Pastor Moldstad: 507-382-0045 Email: pastormoldstad@gmail.com Church Office: 507-385-1386 Divine Service Sunday 8:30 & 10:45 AM JESUS LAMBS AT PEACE PRESCHOOL Teacher/Director: Joslyn Moldstad Phone: 507-385-7752 Email: joslynmoldstad@gmail.com Church website: Peacemankato.com Email: karen@peacemankato.com MARCH 10, 2019 FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT WELCOME TO PEACE! The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. PARENT S ROOM A room is available if your little one needs a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service. Changing tables are in both restrooms. FACILITIES Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use, please switch your hearing aid to T. BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY Lord our strength, the battle of good and evil rages within and around us, and our ancient foe tempts us with his deceits and empty promises. Keep us steadfast in Your Word, and when we fall, raise us up again and restore us through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 2

THE DIVINE SERVICE WITH HOLY COMMUNION Rite 2, p. 60 OPENING HYMN #251 A MIGHTY FORTRESS THE INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord; 3

P: Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean, and that we have sinned against You by thought, word, and deed. Therefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. C: O Most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us; have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You, and of Your will, and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. P: Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His onlybegotten Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name He gives power to become the children of God, and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. C: Grant this unto us, O Lord. Amen. THE KYRIE ELEISON (LORD, HAVE MERCY) (During the penitential season of Lent, the Gloria in Excelsis Deo is omitted) 4

THE SALUTATION THE COLLECT P: Let us pray one God, now and forever. THE LESSON DEUTERONOMY 26:5-10 5 Then you will respond and say in the presence of the LORD your God, My father was a wandering Aramean. He went down to Egypt and lived there as an alien with just a few people, but there he became a great, strong, and populous nation. 6 The Egyptians mistreated and afflicted us. They imposed hard labor on us. 7 We cried out to the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice, and he saw our affliction, our labor, and oppression. 8 The LORD brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and an outstretched arm and with great awe-inspiring acts and signs and wonders. 9 He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 So now, look as I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you have given me, LORD. THE EPISTLE ROMANS 10:8B-13 8 The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that is, the word of faith that we are proclaiming. 9 Certainly, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and it is with 5

the mouth that a person confesses, resulting in salvation. 11 For Scripture says, Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame. 12 So there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, because the same Lord is Lord of all, who gives generously to all who call on him. 13 Yes, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. THE VERSE OF THE DAY P: It is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only. (Matthew 4:10b) THE SENTENCE THE HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel for the First Sunday in Lent is written in the 4 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the 1 st verse. 6

THE GOSPEL LUKE 4:1-13 1 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where he was tempted by the Devil for forty days. He did not eat anything during those days. When they came to an end, he was hungry. 3 The Devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread. 4 Jesus answered him, It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. 5 The Devil led him up to a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 The Devil told him, I will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms, because it has been entrusted to me, and I can give it to anyone I want. 7 So, if you worship me, it will all be yours. 8 Jesus answered him, It is written: You shall worship the Lord your God and serve him only. 9 The Devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple. If you are the Son of God, he said, throw yourself down from here, 10 because it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you. 11 And, they will lift you up with their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 12 Jesus answered him, It says: You shall not test the Lord your God. 13 When the Devil had finished every temptation, he left him until an opportune time. P: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 7

THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; And He shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the Resurrection of the dead and the Life of the world to come. Amen. THE PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. THE PROPER PREFACE AND SANCTUS P: It is truly good, right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God; You bid Your people cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast. Renew our zeal in faith and life, and bring us to the fullness of grace that belongs to the children of God. 11

Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY 12

THE LORD S PRAYER P: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. 13

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. THE AGNUS DEI (LAMB OF GOD) 14
