The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. PARENT S ROOM A room is available if your little one needs a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service. Changing tables are in both restrooms. FACILITIES Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use, please switch your hearing aid to T. BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty and merciful God, You never despise what You have made and always forgive those who turn to You. Create in us such new and contrite hearts that we may truly repent of our sins and obtain Your full and gracious pardon; through Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 2

ASH WEDNESDAY 1 THE DIVINE SERVICE WITH HOLY COMMUNION INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. INSTRUCTION FOR THE BEGINNING OF LENT P: During the 40 days of Lent, we fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God. The time of Lent reminds us that to know Christ and the power of his resurrection, we must also know the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death. As disciples of the Lord Jesus, we are called to struggle against everything that leads us away from love of God and neighbor. I invite you, therefore, to confess your sins, ask our Father for forgiveness, and commit yourselves to this struggle. 1 Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Ashes are referred to many times in the Old Testament as a sign of sorrow, mourning, repentance, and mortality. On this day, many churches use ashes during worship as part of a rite called the Imposition of Ashes. According to this custom, ashes (traditionally made by burning palm fronds used on Palm Sunday of the previous year) are mixed with a small amount of olive oil and applied to the forehead of each worshipper. Whether or not one has ashes placed on his forehead, Christians who worship on this day focus intensely on their utter and complete sinfulness and the necessity of Christ's suffering and death to earn their salvation. 3

THE PSALMODY PSALM 51 Soloist sings refrain (above) Refrain (all) Have mercy on me, God, in your kindness, in your compassion, blot out my offense. Oh wash me more and more from my guilt and my sorrow, and cleanse me from all of my sin. Refrain (all) My offenses, truly I know them, and my sins are always before me. Against you alone have I sinned, O Lord, what is evil in your sight I have done. Refrain (all) Create in me a clean heart, O God, put your steadfast spirit in my soul, Cast me not away from your presence, Oh Lord, and take not your spirit from me. Refrain (all) Give back to me the joy of your salvation, let your willing spirit bear me up and I shall teach your way to the ones who have wandered, and bring them all home to your side. Refrain (all) Words: English translation of the refrain from the Lectionary for the Mass, 1969, International Committee on English in the Liturgy, Inc. CONFESSION OF SINS P: Most holy and merciful Father, C: We confess to you and to one another that we have sinned by our own fault, by our own grievous fault in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. P: We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not forgiven others as we have been forgiven. C: Have mercy on us, Lord. P: We have been deaf to your call to serve as Christ served us. We have not been true to the mind of Christ. We have grieved the Holy Spirit. C: Have mercy on us, Lord. P: We confess to you, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness. The pride, hypocrisy, and impatience in our lives C: We confess to you, O Lord. P: Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, our manipulation of other people C: We confess to you, O Lord. P: Our anger when our selfish aims are denied and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves C: We confess to you, O Lord. P: Our love of worldly goods and comforts and our dishonesty in daily life and work C: We confess to you, O Lord. P: Our negligence in worship and prayer and our failure to show the faith that is in us C: We confess to you, O Lord. P: Forgive us, Lord, for the wrongs we have done. For our blindness to human need and suffering and our indifference to injustice and cruelty, C: Forgive us, O Lord. P: For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward others, and for our prejudice and contempt for those who differ from us, C: Forgive us, O Lord. P: For what we think or say or do that is at variance with your will, C: Forgive us, O Lord. P: Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger depart from us. C: Hear us, Lord, for your mercy is great. 5

ABSOLUTION P: Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, does not desire the death of sinners but rather that they turn from their wickedness and live. Therefore, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. During these days of Lent, let us implore God to give us renewal and his Holy Spirit. May we continue to abide in the true faith and at the last be received by him through the merits of Jesus Christ our Lord. C: Amen. HYMN OF RESPONSE #426:1, 5, 6 JESUS SINNERS DOTH RECEIVE THE PASSION HISTORY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST SEASONAL RESPONSE C: All we like sheep have gone astray, and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. By His wounds we are healed. THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; 6

and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; And He shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the Resurrection of the dead and the Life of the world to come. Amen. THE SERMON HYMN: #452, OUT OF THE DEPTHS I CRY TO THEE THE SERMON MATTHEW 26:20-25 THREE WORDS OF TRUTH SURELY, NOT I? 20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 As they were eating, he said, Amen I tell you: One of you will betray me. 22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after another, Surely, not I, Lord? 23 He replied, The one who dipped his hand in the bowl with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man is going just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born. 25 Judas, who betrayed him, replied, Surely, not I, Rabbi? He said to him, Yes, you are the one. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH THE OFFERING The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Romans 8:32 7

PLEASE FILL OUT THE FRIENDSHIP REGISTER THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION Peace Lutheran Church practices close communion. We ask that only members of the ELS and WELS partake of the Sacrament today. Visitors, please speak to the Pastor about receiving the Sacrament in the future. THE PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. 8

THE PROPER PREFACE AND SANCTUS P: It is truly good, right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God; You bid Your people cleanse their hearts and prepare with joy for the paschal feast. Renew our zeal in faith and life, and bring us to the fullness of grace that belongs to the children of God. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY 9

THE LORD S PRAYER 10

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. 11
