Although not always observed by less liturgical congregations, I have learned its importance in my own life and also found it to enrich the experience of Holy Week and most importantly, the celebration of Easter. There is a depth of walking with the Spirit when we intentionally draw our attention to our sin and need for forgiveness. In the observance of Lent, we can spend time in reflection on the work of the Spirit in our lives. We can listen for God s call to repent and turn away from sins that have become habitual. During Lent we can seek the Spirit s assistance in giving us the discipline to reorder our lives after the way of Jesus. We can spend Lent with a growing thankful heart knowing we are saved by grace. I invite you to join us during the Lenten Season as we reflect, pray and prepare for the glorious celebration of the most important moment in history, the resurrection of Jesus. FAMILY PROMISE PARTNERS NEEDED Hosting Week: March 31 - April 7 Family Promise provides professional case management as well as food, shelter, and transportation for qualified homeless families as they work to restore their independence. Family Promise is one of the few agencies in the area committed to helping homeless families stay together. This is accomplished through the support of various churches in Wake County. Trinity became part of this network in July 2005. We are assigned 2 to 3 host weeks a year when Family Promise guests make Trinity their home. Volunteers are needed to help in a variety of areas. There are opportunities for individuals and Sunday School Classes. Use Signup Genius (bit.ly/fpsignupmar2019) or check at the Registration Center in the Narthex to volunteer. Family Promise brochures describing each volunteer position are also available. You can find more information about the Family Promise organization at their website: www.familypromisewake.org. If you have questions about volunteering or the program, contact Beth Duke (919.880.7454) or Beverly Munday (919.637.0864). HELP NEEDED Looking for ways to be involved? Rev. Steve Byers, slbyers@tbcraleigh.com Special thanks to all of our children and Katie Medlin for a wonderful Children s Day this past week. All of our preschool and children s choirs led us in song and helped us to celebrate worship through the eyes of a child. Thank you, choir directors and leaders, for your continued work in choir ministry each week with the children of Trinity. MARCH MUSIC CALENDAR 10 th Living Praise in 10:55 am service 17 th Bells of Praise and Student Choir, 10:55 am service 24 th Orchestra in both services; New Covenant, 10:55 am SANCTUARY CHOIR & ORCHESTRA PRESENT 12 Sunday, April 14 8:45 am & 10:55 am Services MUSICAL MYTH BUSTER #6: Choirs are full of older people. And, thank God for it! Without the dedication and commitment of our older disciples, choirs would be dynamically and functionally different. Church attendance is made up of multigenerational ministries, and the choir ministries should reflect that as well. We celebrate all ages involved in making music to the Lord. We do not see age as a limitation to effective worship leadership. It is true that enlisting musicians younger than 40 years of age is a huge challenge, especially when children come along and families grow. Today s young families struggle with being involved in multiple ministry areas as opposed to our retired (and semi-retired) people who have more available time. Additionally, young families face a myriad of choice-making for family, work, and school. Church ministry participation becomes one of those choices that is both hard and stressful to carry-out on a regular basis, so it is understandably more time efficient to commit to fewer ministry opportunities and do them well. Sadly, choir ministry is one of those things often set aside because it does require hours of rehearsal and weekend obligation. It is no wonder that most worship-leading choirs in traditional churches are made up of older disciples of Christ. However, we are challenged in making a musical impact in worship because it requires multiple ages to connect and reach a diverse community for Christ. Younger people bring a snapshot of our future in worship leading, and as our dedicated servants move to other stages in life, it is vital to continue their good work by adding new people to carry on worship leadership. What will our choirs look like in 5-10 years from now? Will our church enjoy the same dedication and service likened to what we experience today? How will worship be impacted if we don t see new, multi-aged singers and musicians coming forward to serve? A fresh-water pond teams with life because nutrient-rich water continues to flow into it. That fresh water brings oxygen and life to a pond that could have become stagnant. Choirs are like that. We always need fresh water to continue a vital part of our worship: Music. So, I encourage you to pray how God can use you in choir ministry. Take the plunge into the pond and enjoy the splash. Come join a choir today! Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!
