Communion Antiphon: Psalm 23:5 You have prepared a table before me, and how precious is the chalice that quenches my thirst. 3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Neh 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10 1 Cor 12:12-30 Lk 1:1-4; 4:14-21 MALAWI MOMENT I hope this note finds you and the entire St. Brendan Parish in good health. We are all fine. The new leadership has taken off so well effective 1 January 2019 after having a successful orientation by an external priest. Most of them being new, they look enthusiastic. We hope for good. The Pastoral Team Council has outlined its activities for 2019. Among them, intensifying participation in different church groups and even introducing those which we did not have. Moderators to see to it that there is life in these groups. We hope for officiation of more marriages this year since we are on the campaign that those who did not have their marriages blessed in church do so including encouraging those lapse Christians not receiving sacraments. Intensifying sacramental life for our Parishioners is a priority. The sick and the elderly have not been left out. There will be regular programs in visiting and praying with them. Visiting and conducting retreats in SCC as well as other church groups has been considered too. Together with the finance team, we are to engage in self reliance activities. Parish Development Committee is in the pipeline to spearhead our maize mill project which we intend to have it erected this year by all means. We pray for your support to realize the dreams we have for this year. The crops are doing well and the rains are falling in a right amount. We are not complaining about it except for other Christians who are struggling to put some food on their tables. Still more, better days are yet to come. The rectory has a new cook living in a rented house. We intend to renovate the old house near the rectory for the cook if we have funds available, a task to be left with the Finance committee and Development committee. We continue to value our Sister Parish relationship and pray for its success always. We remember you during our prayers, especially the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Thursday and during our private prayers. We continually thank God for you and for your support in various aspects of our Parish. You are a blessing to our Parish. Detailed reports for St. Brendan Bowl and for the women fund will be presented this week when all data is collected. Wishing you all the best and may God continue blessing you all abundantly. Long live St. Brendan Parish, long live St. Joseph Parish, long live our Sister Parish Relationship! Fr. Davie PAGE 3

ANNOUNCEMENTS (Contact Andrea with questions or to help out.) DATE CHANGE for FIRST RECONCILIATION Because of scheduling multiple priests for First Reconciliation, our date has changed to Feb. 23 at 10:00 a.m. in the church. Save the Date for VACATION BIBLE CAMP 2019: July 8-12 SEWING NEEDED We are making new baptismal garments for adults and older children for the Easter Vigil. Do you have a sewing machine? Can you help? Old Testament SAMARITANS TRY TO HELP Ezra chapters 4 and 5 Samaritans were people who lived in Samaria north of Judah. The northern kingdom once called Israel and the southern kingdom once called Judah had separated back in the time of King Rehoboam. When Assyrians marched into Israel they sent many people away in the Assyrian Captivity. Those who were left behind combined what they remembered from the ancient Hebrew religion with some of the pagan practices around them. Samaritans wanted to help rebuild the temple. But the Jews who had just come back from many years in Babylon didn t trust them to follow the true religion. So a quarrel arose. Letters went back and forth to King Darius trying to find out whether King Cyrus of Persia really had given the Jews permission to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. The work stopped while they waited for an answer. New Testament THE ANNUNCIATION and THE VISITATION Luke 1: 26-56 The angel Gabriel who had been sent to Zechariah with the good news that he would soon be a father now traveled to Nazareth, a small town in the region of Galilee. He started with a greeting that surprised Mary very much. According to St. Luke the angel said Rejoice, O highly favored daughter! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women. What was this special blessing? It was that Mary would become the Mother of the Son of the Most High. As soon as the angel had left her, Mary hurried to her cousin Elizabeth s house. Elizabeth was six months pregnant with John the Baptist. As soon as Elizabeth heard Mary s voice, the baby leaped in her womb, filled with the Holy Spirit. Then Mary sang a beautiful prayer that we now call Magnificat. MY FAITH Cardinal Virtues A VIRTUE is a habit of doing good that comes from a good attitude. The CHURCH has named 4 important virtues called Cardinal Virtues. They are 1. Prudence using our reason to choose the right action. 2. Justice treating all people with respect and fairness. 3. Fortitude which means that you keep doing good even in difficult situations. 4. Temperance balance, means choosing not to be distracted by too many pleasures. BIBLE BOOKS LEVITICUS was written to teach worship practices, and to teach specific ways to follow the 10 Commandments. PAGE 4

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION OF UNBORN BABIES This weekend, is Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, we will begin the special program called the Spiritual Adoption of Unborn Children. This is a program to help us all act upon our Church s teaching that all life is wanted and sacred. We are invited to spiritually adopt a child that has been newly conceived this month by praying daily for one of these children over the next nine months. Simply say Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen s prayer: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much, I beg you to spare the life of the preborn child that I have spiritually adopted and who is in danger of abortion. After nine months of prayers, we will celebrate the births by having a baby shower at which gifts will be collected to help local mothers in need. We hope to have many parishioners join in this program to save God s unborn children. The Respect Life Committee will have a table in the Narthex this weekend to add your spiritually adopted baby s name to the list of children being prayed for. The power of prayer is tremendous, you can make a difference for life!

BULLETIN DEADLINE 12 Noon Monday (Friday 4:30pm when Monday is a Holiday) bulletin@saintbrendan.org ONLINE PARISHIONER REGISTRATION & ONLINE GIVING Every person s finances and family situation is different. Jesus makes it clear that it matters not how much one gives, but that it is planned, calculated, at least somewhat sacrificial (see Luke 24:1-4), and not simply from what is leftover at the end of the month. We propose the tithe (10%) as the ideal every family can consider working towards. This means taking steps to give 5% to one s parish, and 5% to other charities or causes you have personal passion for. You can register online at www.saintbrendan.org and click on the link Online Registration/New Parishioner on lower left corner of website and to give online, click on the Online Giving link. It s quick, secure, convenient, and easy. Your support helps sustain our parish. If you need help with online giving, please call the Parish Office at 425-483-9400. PAGE 7
