The card was for the donation that was made so they could purchase an American flag and poles for their pack. Jeff Fisher has agreed to join Dennis Neidert, José Banaag and Fred La- France (chairmen) on the membership committee. When Dennis Neidert, Fred La- France, and I represented our Assembly at the District meeting on October 16, Master Charlie Giametta stated that he is establishing a diocesan Honor Guard to serve at special events within the Columbus Diocese. He is seeking volunteers willing to serve two to four times a year. At the meeting we also learned that our next District meeting is March 18 at Heath St Leonard's. Spring Exemplification will be April 27-28 at Cherry Valley Lodge, and the 2012-13 Assembly Officer Installation is tentatively set for July 28 at the Cathedral. We were presented with a rebate check for Exemplification booklet ads that we sold during the 2010-11 fiscal year November has proven to be as busy as the last few months. November 5 was the Fall Exemplification with 44 candidates making the move to 4th Degree. A Monsignor, two priests and a deacon were among those exemplified. Terry Dorn was brought into our assembly during this event. Please join me in welcoming Terry and his Lady Debra. Council # 5534 had their Memorial Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes. Our Honor and Color Guards were present. November 6 was Confirmation in Plain City. We had eight Sir Knights participating. The Bishop and Fr Pat were very glad to see us. In appreciation for serving 7 years as Bishop and 32 years as a priest, our assembly presented Bishop Campbell with a black walnut Chalice and Paten hand-crafted by SK Duane Lord. Spiritual Food from our Faithful Friar: A Catholic Thanksgiving Dear Brother Knights, We reflect this month on being thankful for the many blessings that God has brought to our lives. Even though Thanksgiving is not an official feast day of the Church, many parishes will still mark the occasion with a special mass and blessing of food for the poor or family use. Thanksgiving in the United States does have surprisingly Catholic origins, as described by Michael Gannon, a retired history professor from the University of Florida. Professor Gannon said that the Spanish explorer Pedro Menendez de Aviles celebrated the feast of Thanksgiving with the Timucua Indians on September 8th,1565 in St Augustine Florida, the oldest permanent European settlement in the United States. There were no turkeys, parades, or discounted shopping. This was 56 years before the Pilgrim s celebration in 1621 which most Americans consider as basis for today s Thanksgiving. And again before Plymouth, the Spanish explorer Don Juan de Onate had already declared officially a Day of Thanksgiving on April 30th, 1598 in what is now the State of Texas. The day was commemorated with the holy sacrifice of the Mass. What he did was what essentially Catholic-to celebrate the Eucharist the Greek word which precisely means Thanksgiving God's Peace, Fr David The Point from the Faithful Captain: Next month on December 7 th, we should celebrate Pearl Harbor Day and remember that those who forget history are condemned to repeat it. Pearl Harbor Day commemorates the beginning of World War II, but it is not a national holiday and is not celebrated with the significance of Veterans Day. Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11 th ; it is marked by parades and church services and in many places the American flag is hung at half-mast. A period of silence lasting two minutes may be held at 11am. On this day we honor all military personnel who have served the United States in all wars, particularly living veterans. Veterans Day was originally celebrated as Armistice Day. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect. On November 11, 1919, Armistice Day was commemorated for the first time. In 1919, President Wilson proclaimed the day should be "filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country s service and with gratitude for the victory". There were plans for parades, public meetings and a brief suspension of business activities at 11am. In 1926, the United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I and declared that the anniversary of the armistice should be commemorated with prayer and thanksgiving. The Congress also requested that the president should "issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places. In 1954, after WW II and the Korean War, the veterans service organizations urged Congress to change the word "Armistice" to "Veterans". Congress approved this change and on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor all American veterans, wherever and whenever they had served. On these days of National Unity we should remember in particular to thank those veterans whom we know, for their service and sacrifice. SK Dennis Neidert Faithful Captain Page 2 SIR KNIGHTLY KNEWS

Memorial Mass for the deceased members of Council #5534 Marysville Council 5534 offered a Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes for the intention of the deceased members of the council during the 4:30PM Vigil Mass Saturday, November 5, 2011. The council coordinates this annual event with the parish to honor those who have faithfully demonstrated true Christian values. The council usually schedules the activity between All Soul s Day (when the Church remembers all the faithful departed) and Veteran s Day (since many of these deceased brother knights have served their country at one point). About two dozen family members of our deceased brother knights attended this Mass, sitting together to demonstrate unity and fraternity. SK José Banaag Grand Knight at the Ambo; from front to rear, Anne Daniel with son Paul, Mike Daniel, SK John Huffman Fourth Degree Sir Knights from Assemblies 806 and 3157 served as the Color and Honor Guards for the Mass. After the Mass, the Grand Knight read the names of our deceased brother knights, and offered a prayer for their souls, hoping that these brother knights continue to guide us as we try to demonstrate the principles of the Order. SK José Banaag Grand Knight The Honor Guard salutes Fr David at the end of the Memorial Mass, from left to right: Herb Rudnicki, SK John Warnement, SK Steve Roseberry, SK Eric Suchland, SK Dennis Neidert, SK José Banaag entering the Sacristy. This is one of them. Brother Don Wesley, FICF, is a General Agent in Michigan. At the end of last year he sent an email to all of his members (about 1,000 people). This email was intended to inform the members of the good works of the insurance program for year 2010. One of the members replied ALL and sent this back to all 1,000 people: Please don t bother me with requests to sell me insurance. I love to volunteer but don t like these emails. May God bless the good work we do. Brother T.H. One of the 1,000 folks who received this email responded with the following: Brother T.H. - As Christians we are well aware of the reality that no-one gets out of this life alive; our eternal life begins when we exit this one. So while we are enjoying the splendors of eternal JOY in heaven, we should not burden those that are currently left behind and grieving for us, with the imposition of the enormous costs of our burial. This is accomplished thru insurance. I am not selling it, however felt like I should reply from my own experience since you had replied to all. When my father passed on, after 9 long days in the hospital, he did not have adequate insurance or financials to take care of this. The situation was difficult enough without the fact that the funeral home wanted upfront payment. My family did not have $10,000 for a cheap burial; we were turned away and had to find another funeral home that would take credit, and on the way my car broke down. This test of faith was almost too much to bear, except for families emotional support and trust in God. We found an accommodating funeral home and the arraignments were made. This time was very stress filled and insurance to cover this would have made this just a little less stressful. If you have insurance thru work or elsewhere, just delete this email. However, if you do not, please think what your family will have to go thru at this stress filled time, and prepare for the inevitable. The Knights programs strive to support Christians everywhere and at every stage of life. Don Wesley was very helpful with my family s financial future and insurance needs. - Peace- Brother Bill T Here is what Brother Bill T. had to say after he sent the email: My situation was 16 years ago but I still remember the added stress because that portion of the ordeal was not planned for in advance. Men do not like to read directions to put things to gather, or plan for the future; however it is not about us, especially at our end, it is about those that we leave behind and lessen their burden. God Bless the Knights of Columbus for their work. Let God be your strength and know that your work will be a GREAT BLESSING to all who accept it. Bottom line: Call me and let s talk about what you know you need to plan for, but have put off for one reason or another. Fraternally, SK Craig Heppner.
