Gladstone Uniting Church Interface Lent 1 10 March 2019 Welcome ello and welcome all to H worship this morning. We extend a special welcome to all visitors to our Church today. May your time of worship be a blessed one. Please stay for morning tea in the hall after the service. If you are a visitor, or newcomer, to our Church, please fill out a green card that you will find in the Blue Books in the pew. These can be placed in the prayer well at the rear of the church at the end of worship on your way to morning tea. Prayer Points For God s direction and blessings for the Bambrick, Beale, Bettiens & Binney families of our congregation. Reconciling God, by your grace the incarnate Christ entered our world, became one of us. He entered our homes as both guest and host; offering radical hospitality and challenged our norms. We worship and adore you. For self-centeredness, Lord have mercy. For neglecting the need of others, Christ have mercy. For lack of acceptance, Lord have mercy. Amen For the most up-to-date information on our church please remember www.gladstoneuniting.org.au Lectionary Bible Readings This Week: Lent 1 Next Week: Lent 2 Deuteronomy 26: 1-11 Genesis 15: 1-12, 17-18 Psalm 91: 1-2, 9-12 Psalm 27 Romans 10: 8b-13 Philippians 3: 17-4:1 Luke 4: 1-13 Luke 13: 31-35 Our Vision is for the Gladstone Region to be a community where everyone experiences the transforming love of Jesus.
Lent 1 Year C Psalm 91 - He who dwells in the secret place This psalm has been one of the favourites among Christians for it speaks of divine protection against the diverse attacks of Satan. The satanic assault on our lives is manifold. A thousand shall fall at your side, says our psalm, and ten thousand at your right hand. Our experience of temptation, much like our experience of divine grace, is of variant texture and there should be a corresponding variety of how we deal with it. The great diversity of demons through which Satan attacks us, is best explained by the fact that each of them is a fallen angel. When God created the myriads of angels, he created them to manifest the vast variations of his own splendour. The demons, likewise display a similar diversity. Whatever the case, there is no doubt that the demons attack our souls with a great assortment of temptations and trials. Note that it is the only psalm quoted by Satan to temp Jesus while he was in the wilderness for 40 days and nights. The challenge, then, for Christians is to do what the psalm suggests to dwell in the secret places or the shelter of the Most High. That is, in order to be able to beat off the attacks of the devil, we need to live in a place that is close to the heart of God. Just like a chick huddles under the wing of its mother to be protected from the storm, so we need to have that kind of relationship with God that affords us protection when the storms of life come crashing over us. Note that the admonition is to dwell in God s shelter, not duck in and out at our leisure. It s the same sense in the New Testament when we are called to abide in Christ. This dwelling or living or abiding represents an ongoing relationship and not something you only turn to when the going happens to get tough. Abide in him as he abides in you. Grace and peace. Allan (from P.H. Reardon, Christ in the Psalms) Thank you to those who have helped to make the Church a cleaner, tidier place during the Working Bee (and the days during the week when tiles were laid)
