Kindergarten-2nd June 20-21, 2015 Genesis 2; Philippians 4:6 Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. The Fall We need God s Rescue. The Fall is a tough lesson. But believing we ve made wrong choices and need a rescue is one of the most important things to understand when we follow Jesus. Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. As kids leave, make sure they take their coffee filter creations from Connect Time. Encourage them to explain to their parents why they made them. (Their designs got messed up and changed, just like God s!) We re talking about the Fall, when Adam and Eve made a choice to disobey God and all the wrong things in the world began. This story reveals to us that we all need to be rescued!

GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. COFFEE FILTER ACTIVITY Give each kid a piece of paper Give each kid a coffee filter Place the coffee filter on the piece of paper (this is to make sure the marker doesn t leak onto the table) Kids should use markers to draw any kind of design they want When they are done, tell them you re going to spray their designs with water; warn them that it will change the way it looks Go around and spray each design (the adult should keep the spray bottle at all times) As kids watch it change, debrief: o o How does it feel to watch your design change? Have you ever built a tower or drawn a picture that somebody else knocked over or messed up? Tell us about it. Before you go to Large Group, ask kids how their week went. You can also remind kids of the expectations for Large Group behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

Goal: Kids will (1) understand that people messed up God s perfect world and (2) recognize that God planned a rescue so he could be close to us Why? Not only did God intend for the world to be perfect but he also came up with a rescue when we messed it up. It s our disobedience that causes everything wrong in the world. Tip: Since Connect Time was more of a craft, we re playing an active game during small group. Decide ahead of time how to best do it with your room. REVIEW THE STORY 1. How did God create the world? 2. What was special about people? (Lead kids to this response: We can make choices.) 3. How did the perfect world get messed up? 4. What did God do after people messed the world up? (planned a rescue) 5. Name some ways we can be close to God right now. (Consider Philippians 4:6; ask Him for help, talk to him, thank him) ACTIVITY: BEACH BALL GAME *If it s easier, you can play this together as one big group. Or you can keep kids seated and have them roll the ball on a table without letting it fall off. Stand in a circle Give one kid a beach ball Play Don t Let it Fall : The goal is to keep the beach ball in the air by gently tapping it to each other, in any pattern (like volleyball) Count how many times it falls. Play until you only have about 5 minutes left in the service. Then sit back down. Ask kids: How many of you let it fall? Explain: It s impossible to keep it in the air, just like it s impossible to live a perfect life without messing up. Think of a time you ve hurt somebody, refused to share, disobeyed your parents or been mean. When you have one, raise one finger. (When kids are done, continue.) That means we ve all disobeyed God and we ALL need his rescue! Does anybody have questions/confusion about today s story? *Pray together, thanking God for rescuing us. (Continue on the following page)

2 Give kids a coloring page. If you still have extra time, practice the verse using the motions from Large Group: Philippians 4:6 (hold up 4 fingers; hold up 6 fingers) Don t worry about anything; (shake your head and your finger back and forth) instead, pray about everything. (fold hands in prayer) Tell God what you need, (point up) and thank him for all he has done. (spread your hands wide)

1 You are using clay again today. Get it ready before you begin your presentation. Instead of focusing on verse memorization, today is all about applying the verse. Ahead of time, plan how you want to lead kids through the response exercise at the end. Hi everybody, welcome to Kids Club! It s great to see you here. It was so much fun to see all the amazing designs you guys made. And some of them looked really cool when they got sprayed with water! Raise your hand if you liked your design better after it was sprayed (let kids respond). Raise your hand if you did NOT like it after it was sprayed (let kids respond). Hm, yeah, some of you liked it better, because it did look pretty cool. But some of you didn t like it as much, because it changed the design you made and looked different than you wanted it to look. And even if you liked it this time, I bet we can all think of a time something we cared about got messed up. Think about it: Have you ever built a tower with blocks or legos that somebody messed up? Give me a thumbs down if that s ever happened to you (let kids respond). Or maybe a favorite stuffed animal fell on the ground and got dirty or lost. Give me a thumbs down if that s ever happened to you (let kids respond). Or maybe you were playing Minecraft or another video game and somebody came in and ruined what you were building or the level you were on. Has that ever happened? (Let kids give thumbs down.) SCIENCE INTRO Looks like you guys know what it feels like to have something you care about get messed up. And guess what? God does too. Remember how He made a perfect home to live in with his very favorite creation you and me?? Well, today we re going to hear about how people actually messed it up. To understand that, let s watch today s science experiment video! We re going to see two perfectly nice glasses of water. Then something happens to one of them to change it! See if you can figure out what happens to everything that goes into the blue water. Video: Sink or Swim

Whoa! So what happened to everything that went into the blue glass? (Let kids respond.) That s right, it all sunk and got completely ruined. THE FALL That s a little like what happens in today s story. God made a perfect world, like that perfect cup of water. It was a home where the first two people, Adam and Eve, could walk and talk with God, play with animals and explore all the amazing things God had made. God wanted all of us to live in it forever and never get sick or sad or have someone treat us badly. Unfortunately, something happened to change the world and make it how it is today, full of sadness and sickness and meanness and death. We re going to watch a video of some kids retelling what happened. See if you can figure out why our home isn t perfect anymore! Video: KBS: The Fall Wow, so what did humans do to mess up the perfect world? (Let kids respond.) That s right, we made a choice to disobey God and eat the fruit that he told them not to eat. And with that one wrong choice, suddenly the world wasn t perfect anymore. Wrong choices, which are called sins, entered the world and led to more and more and more wrong choices. And now we know what it feels like to be sad and hurt. GOD MADE US TO LOVE HIM We ve talked about how God made the whole world just by speaking. He said, Let there be light! And what was there? (Let kids say: Light!) That s right. He said, Let there be mountains! And what was there? (Let kids say: Mountains!) That s right. God did that with the whole world. (Take the clay in your hands.) Then, He wanted to make something special, someone he could love, who would love him back. God took some dirt or clay and breathed life into it to make the first person. And He made people special, to be like him. Think about it this way: When you drew your picture, did the paper tell any of the markers, No! Don t draw on me! (Let kids say: No.) Did any of the markers tell you they wanted to draw somewhere else? (Let kids say: No.) No, that s silly! Paper and markers can t talk! Neither can flowers or grass or oceans. But God made PEOPLE to be able to think and talk and say, I love you and I ll obey you OR to say, I m going to disobey you. God hoped people would choose to love him and obey him. But did Adam and Eve disobey? (Let kids say: Yes). Yep, they sure did. GOD PLANNED A RESCUE The good news is, even though we all make choices to disobey God and mess up the perfect home he made for us, God STILL loves us!! And He came up with a plan to send his own son Jesus to take the punishment for the wrong things we did. That way, God can be close to us. And one day, He ll RE-create the whole world so that it s a perfect home again!

God knows we have to live in a world that s messed up, and that s not easy. Let s look at some pictures. If they are things that would NOT be in a perfect world, make a big X with your arms, like this (model). If these are things that WOULD be in a perfect world, put your arms above your head to make a world, like this (model): Laughter Sickness Bullying Love (getting along) Bloody Knee Talking to God The good news is, there are still beautiful parts of this world because God made it and because he sent Jesus to bring his love to earth. Now, because of Jesus rescue, we can be close to God and be loved by him. So when it s hard to live in a world like this when you get scared or angry or you make a wrong choice or someone hurts you remember Philippians 4:6: SLIDE: Philippians 4:6 Don t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Practice these hand motions with kids: Philippians 4:6 (hold up 4 fingers; hold up 6 fingers) Don t worry about anything; (shake your head and your finger back and forth) instead, pray about everything. (fold hands in prayer) Tell God what you need, (point up) and thank him for all he has done. (spread your hands wide) RESPOND AND PRAY (Leave the verse up as you lead kids through a response.) Let s talk to God about this. First, close your eyes (pause). Now think about the hard parts of this world or the times people including you and me have disobeyed God. Let s ask God to help us. In your head, finish this sentence: God, I need help with. (Pause) Now thank Him for one thing he has done by finishing this sentence: God, thank you for. (Pause.) (Wrap up, leading the kids in prayer to thank God for sending a rescuer.) WORSHIP One way we can thank God is by singing to him in worship. Everybody stand up and let s sing two songs to God! One is about the world He made. The other is about how He s close to us and can help us make every decision if we let him!
