PARISH NEWS FIRST COMMUNION- TODAY During this Easter season we welcome many precious children to the Table of the Lord for their First Communion. Today, April 28, at the 9:30 and 11:30 Masses, they gathered around the altar to receive the Lord in Eucharist. They also reminded us of that day long ago when we dressed in our finest to receive the "finest gifts" that God could give us. We join with these beautiful children and their families and friends as we thank the Lord for His constant presence in our lives. May God bless and keep them and all of us- like the lambs He gathers- close to His heart. AND NEXT WEEKEND...AT THE 5:30 and 11:30 Masses... Our final preparation begins for all those who will receive First Communion next weekend. Practice is scheduled for Friday, May 3 at 4:30 and 5:30 for these children. Please be prompt and parents are always welcome to stay for practice. Keep all these children and their families in your special prayers. PICTURES Group picture will be taken each week on Sunday at 11am in the Youth Room. Please be there by 10:50. Picture takes 5 minutes if we are all on time. BREAD This weekend, April 27 & 28, you can smell the delicious bread and take some home to share. All donations benefit the hungry people served by Catholic Relief Services. Put it on your shopping list and let your contribution feed many. CENSUS UPDATE We have begun work on updating our census files. Over a period of the next six months, you will be receiving a letter asking you to update the information we currently show on file. We appreciate your prompt response - please feel free to drop off your corrected census sheet in the collection basket during Mass, or return to us via mail. If you have any questions, please call the parish office (ext. 10). SJN CREW PLANS DISASTER RECOVERY FOR HURRICANE SANDY ON NJ COAST Plans are being made to work with the Northeast Monmouth County, New Jersey Habitat for Humanity leaving Sunday, Sept. 29 and returning to Pittsburgh Friday, Oct. 4. Housing will be in a Redemptorist retreat center. Adults from SJN have been to Mississippi six times for Hurricane Katrina and last November to Tuscaloosa, AL for home building with Habitat after a tornado there. If interested, please contact Sarah Schneider at saranjs1@aol.com or call her at 412-366-4927. A collection will be taken for this cause on the first weekend of September. CONGRATULATIONS! With gratitude to Our Lord, we are pleased to make the following announcement: We congratulate Richard J. Caruso of our parish who has been called by his Bishop, the Most Reverend David A. DID YOU KNOW...HELP YOURSELF Next to the Bible in the narthex, you can find some wonderful reading resources for children. These weekly reflection sheets help our Scripture readings come alive for us. Use them here or take them home or send them to your grandkids. CALLING ALL GOLFERS! All 6th and 7th graders and a few 8th graders too who missed the Rite of Signing, are invited to come forward on Pentecost, May 18/19 to celebrate that rite and to remind us of the power of the Spirit that enables us to follow Christ. Our classes for the 8th graders who are beginning the immediate preparation for Confirmation begin May 1, Wednesday night at 6:30 with Mass. These classes continue on every Wednesday of May( 5 sessions) All candidates are expected to participate and need to be registered. We are blessed to have these young people come to the church with the encouragement of their families and sponsors. Please look at the Spirit Book in the narthex and choose one or two of them to keep in prayer as we continue this time of preparation. And of course everyone is welcome at the Wednesday 6:30 Mass. Come! ANOINTING OF THE SICK Anyone in need of the power of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is invited to come to the 9 AM Mass on Sat. May 4. BAPTISM PREP Blessings to anyone who is expecting a child or who has recently welcomed new life into their family. One of the greatest gifts we can share is the life of Christ through the sacraments. So if you desire to ask for this gift of Baptism for your precious child, please come on May 19 from 10:30 till noon to remember, pray and reflect on the importance and power of this sacrament in your family and in the church family. Please call the Rel Ed office. MARRIAGE PREP Many thanks to Rick and Carol Caruso, DJ and Sandy Jagus, Laurie Reese, Mark and Carole Shepard, Mimi Stullken and Fr Al for sharing their time and stories. Our parish hosted 25 couples on Saturday, April 27 for a day of Marriage Preparation. We are delighted to have so many from near and far seeking to receive the sacrament of Matrimony in the church. We pray that this step on their journey holds them close to Christ. Sometimes living the vocation of married life gets difficult in this world so please hold them in your prayers too. For Paul and Barnabas, it s smooth sailing. For the sponsoring church at Antioch, good news. The second reading - a vision - offers a picture of triumph, pure and simple. We might paraphrase God s direct words to read: Don t you see? I make all things new! The young church remains new and young to this day if and when it follows the command Jesus lays down in the Gospel: Love one another. The attitude and actions of love define the disciples and identify them with their master. Every person on this earth can be a disciple. For discipleship does not depend on learning or sophistication or age or arcane knowledge of secret cults. We are asked to study and practice the ways of love, right here and right now in the company of ordinary people. A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE BY BUD OZAR In today s gospel Jesus tells us: Love one another. Love holds a family together. It is not what a family does which makes it outstanding, rather it is what it has, love for one another. Diocese of Pittsburgh Notification Bishop Zubik and the Diocese has informed us that Fr. John Wellinger, when he was Parochial Vicar at St. James in Wilkinsburg from June 1981-July 1985, abused a victim. If you or a loved one were harmed as a minor by Fr Wellinger or any person representing the Catholic Church of Pittsburgh, please contact our diocesan Victim Assistance Hotline at 1-888-808-1235. You need not carry this burden alone.
