RYNA, Variety, 30 août 2005 ww.variety.com/review/ve1117928021.html?c=31 Posted: Tue., Aug. 30, 2005, 8:52pm PT Ryna (Romania-Switzerland ) A correction was made to these credits on Sept. 20, 2005. A Pacific Films/Strada Film/Elefant Films/TSR co-production. Produced by Erifc Garoyan, Xavier Ruiz, Catalin Mitulescu. Directed by Ruxandra Zenide. Screenplay, Marek Epstein, Andreea Valean. Ryna - Dorotheea Petre Father - Valentin Popescu Grandfather - Nicolae Praida By DEBORAH YOUNG A girl forced to grow up in boy's clothing breaks away from her oppressive family in "Ryna," a striking feature debut by Romanian helmer Ruxandra Zenide. Much of the pic's strength is in leaning on the frail shoulders of newcomer Dorotheea Petre, who is insightful and refreshingly contemporary as a boy-girl-woman searching for her identity. Original plotting and a moody atmosphere should help push the film beyond fest screenings to reach selected arthouse auds. In a grubby Romanian backwater on the Danube delta, 16-year-old Ryna pumps gas and works as a mechanic for her hard-drinking, slave-driving dad. She's adept at repairing motors, soldering metal and driving trucks. Over her mother's ineffectual protests, she's forced by her father to wear overalls and crop her hair -- to live as a boy and work like a horse. But she finds a way to steal time for her hobby, photography, as well as clandestine meetings with a lovelorn mailboy. Ever night she drives to town to drag her drunken father home from the local bar. Old beyond her years, marked by the poverty and hardship of her life, she is the one who keeps her family under control. One day, a young Frenchman turns up to research a university thesis. His topic is the origins of the Latin civilization, which he somehow plans to discover by measuring the arms, hands and fingers of the local population. He, too, becomes interested in the fascinating Ryna. So is the town mayor, a seedy character who can't take his eyes off her. Climax of the film comes one night at a fair, where her three admirers each make their play for her. Her innocent delight in wearing a dress for the first time in her life ends in the worst way possible, as the men betray her. Yet Ryna shows she's tough enough to pull through, in a dramatically and emotionally satisfying conclusion very much in keeping with film's feminist, individualist spirit. Zenide shows a steady hand directing a varied cast, which includes a kindly but senile grandfather (Nicolae Praida) and a good-hearted doctor and his wife. Her focus is always on Petre, however, whose sensual, impish face looks stylish and mischievous even in her rough work clothes. Not surprisingly, her perf won debut kudos at the Transylvania film fest in Cluj early this year. Marius Panduru's widescreen lensing captures the poverty of the delta region, as well as its wide-open fields and empty beaches, while his lighting explores deep into the characters' faces.
