Page 2 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition April 9-15, 2017 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC 48 Krishna Bhakthi was produced by Lena Chettiar and was directed by the successful editor-turned-filmmaker, R. S. Mani (the maker of, films like En Magan, Kannagi, Devaki and Maman Magal) who also wrote the screen story. It was inspired by the notorious figure of history Rasputin, the Mad Monk of Czarist Russia, and a French novel The Monk.. Noted Tamil writers, S. D. S. Yogi (also a scholar, poet and filmmaker), Sandilyan and Ku. Pa. Sethu Ammal wrote the dialogues. Lyrics were by Udumalai Narayana Kavi, one of the big names of Tamil cinema of his day. The sadly under-rated S. V. Venkataraman and the classical musician Kunnakudi Venkatarama Iyer, composed the pleasing songs. The lead players included P. U. Chinnappa, T. R. Rajakumari, SP. L. Dhanalakshmi (Rajakumari s aunt), K. R. Ramasami, D. Balasubramaniam, N. S. Krishnan, T. A. Mathuram and P. A. Periyanayaki, the singing actress and playback-singer. The film was a major success and many of its songs became popular. MLV was to have acted in the M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar s come back movie Raja Mukthi (1948) which was made in Poona (now Pune). After Bhagavathar was arrested in December 1944 for his alleged involvement in the sensational and historic Lakshmikantham Murder Case, he underwent a 30-month term in prison and was acquitted as Not guilty in April 1947. Then he promoted his own film unit Narendra Pictures and its first film was Raja Mukthi. MLV went to Poona for acting but, for many reasons, she chose not to act and instead she took her bow as a playback singer in this film. She sang duets with Bhagavathar and the songs became popular while the movie flopped in spite of its prophetic title. Raja Mukthi had M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, V. N. Janaki, P. Bhanumathi (her first Tamil film, and she played the vamp in it), Serukalathur Sama, P. G. Venkatesan (known as Saigal of South India ), noted character actor M.R. Swaminathan, M.G. Ramachandran (in a minor role), P.S. Veerappa, M. G. Chakrapani, C. T. Rajakantham and Baby Rajamani (stage, screen and TV star V. Gopalakrishnan s sister). MLV sang the songs Kulakodi thazhaikka (raga Ramapriya), Enna Aanandam (raga Simhendramadhyamam, duet with MKT), Santhoshamai anbar.. (duet with P. Bhanumathi), Aaraaro (raga Yaman Kalyani), Ingum Angum (raga Madhyamaavathi, duet with MKT). The lyrics were by Papanasam Sivan, and C. R. Subburaman was the music director. Unusually in this film there was a Song Trainer. That was Alathur Sivaubramania Iyer, one of the famous Alathur Brothers. The director was the well-known filmmaker of 1930-1940s, Raja Chandrasekhar, who had directed MKT in the hit film, Ashok Kumar (1941). MLV later went to Coimbatore to act in the Rayal Talkie film Sudharshan (1951). The folk myth tale of the Maratta potter Saint Gora Kumbhar, the film was long in production for many reasons. In competition with it, the Indian movie mogul S. S. Vasan had produced the same tale as Chakradhari (1948) with Chittoor V.Nagaiah, Pushpavalli, and her sister Suryaprabha in the lead roles. The film was a major hit and it affected the other production badly. This was one of the reasons for the delay. The potter-saint tale has two female roles, both his wives. In Sudharshan, the hero was P. U. Chinnappa and the first wife was the leading Tamil-Telugu film star, Pasupuleti Kannamba. MLV was cast as the young second wife. After a few reels were shot, MLV opted out the film. In came buxom Mangalam (of Yogam-Mangalam duo). Why did MLV walk out of the roles that came her way? In a long chat with this writer during the late 1970s, she said, I did not feel happy in the film world as I did in the Carnatic music world. There were too many kinds of pressures on me from many quarters. You know how it is in cinema world... You know better and I do not have to tell you in detail. One director said that my face was unfit for the camera because I had refused to dance to his tunes! You know him... so no names! I realized in the very beginning that unless you yield to such pressures you could not get anywhere in cinema. I did not like it and I hated the very atmosphere. I don t say that people in our music world are all saints! No. But it is not like the film world. Once you give in once there is no limit thereafter. When you get old, you do not get roles and nobody will even look at you! I know many old film artistes who are now starving. Therefore, I decided not to act but only sing playback which I did for many years in Tamil films and also some in Telugu. When my involvement with Carnatic music began to get deeper and deeper and I got busy with my concerts and records, I moved away from cinema completely. (To be continued) Program in Ramana Bhaktha Samajam on Sundays Sri Ramana Baktha Samajam, West Mambalam (BVSN Moorthy School, Thambiah Road, West Mambalam) conducts the following program on Sundays: 5 p.m: Veda paarayanam 5.30 p.m: Ramana Maharishi s Aksharamanamalai. 6 p.m: Discourse. All are welcome. More details can be had in phone 94441 72623. Special pooja is conducted and prasadam distributed among special children at 11.30 a.m on Ramana Maharishi s birth star day (Punarpoosam). A 2-ft wide and 5-ft deep crater formed after the road caved in near a sewage manhole on Chakrapani Street Extension, near Five Lights junction, West Mambalam 15 days back. A palm frond has been placed over the crater to caution motorists. The section of the road has also been fenced off. Motorists have appealed to Corporation officials to fill and close the trench and also relay the section of the road to prevent any untoward incident. Avenue tree infested with termites An avenue tree outside 280, Mahadevan Street, West Mambalam is infested with termites. It is likely to die if immediate action is not taken by the officials concerned to remove the infestation. Will the concerned authorities take immediate action? EB junction box resting precariously on damaged foundation A TNEB pillar box on the pavement of Lakshmanasamy Salai, K. K. Nagar, opposite IOB had toppled over after its foundation collapsed several weeks back. Instead of rebuilding the foundation, EB workers just loosely rearranged the damaged bricks from the old foundation and placed the pillar box on top of them. The pillar box is balancing precariously and is likely to fall on the pavement any moment. It poses a grave danger to unwary passersby. Road caves in near Five Lights junction Free yoga course from today Sannyasi Krishnayogam will conduct a month-long free yoga course for adults from 5.30 a.m to 7 a.m from Sunday, April 9, in Bala Vidya Higher Secondary School (30, Vasu-devapuram, near Doraiswamy Road subway). The classes are conducted according to the curriculum of the Bihar School of Yoga. Asanas, praanayama pratyahara (sense withdrawal techniques), dharana (concentration), meditation, mantra, value education, food habits and Govt. buses carrying school students must also meet safety norms Not just school buses, even government buses ferrying school students must conform to guidelines on student safety, the Madras High Court has said. However, it is enough for school vehicles to undergo a check once in six months instead of once in three months, it added. We direct the state government to look into the issue and, if possible, issue necessary guidelines, and take care of the safety of the children travelling even in government buses, said the first bench of Acting Chief Justice Huluvadi G. Ramesh and Justice R. M. T. Teekaa Raman on April 3. The modifications were made after the Tamil Nadu Nursery, Primary, Matriculation and Higher Secondary Schools Association wanted two specific provisions in the Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicles (Regulation and Control of School Buses) Special Rules, 2012 quashed. As per Rule 5(2) the age of the bus attendant should be between 21 and 50, and he should be medically fit to get down from the bus at each stop to help children get off or get in. Rule 8(2)(iii) says a school bus must be inspected by a special cell once in three months, though the requirement for other buses is only once in three years. While relaxing the inspection norms by holding that it is enough if the special cell inspects school vehicles once every six months, and not every three months as stipulated in Rule 8(2)(iii), the bench refused to have a relook at the age restriction for vehicle attendants. Unused EB junction box lying on cycle track An unused TNEB junction box in a rusted condition is lying on the newly formed bicycle track on P. T. Rajan Salai, near Panneerselvam Salai, K. K. Nagar. It is blocking the way for cyclists and pedestrians. shat kriyas (internal pathways cleaning for managing diseases) will be taught. The classes will include sessions on anatomy and physiology for better understanding of the benefits of yoga. Classes on stress management for corporate executives are also conducted. Doctors will give lectures on alternative medicines. Swamiji also offers counseling to his students. For more details, call 94442 40383 / 94450 51015 or visit www.satyamyogatrust.net.

When I peeped out to find the source of the din, I found that a borewell was being dug in GRT Silverware showroom located opposite our residential complex on Rangan Road, T. Nagar. The genset mounted on a vehicle to provide power to the drilling machine was also making a lot of noise. Since the sound was earpiercing and it was impossible to sleep, I went down and told the workmen to stop the work. As they did not heed my advice, I rang up Police Control Room. The police patrol vehicle came immediately and, after getting the details, intervened to get the work stopped. The act of digging a borewell, that too in the night, is in gross violation of rules. Further, prior to digging a borewell, written permission needs to be obtained from the authorities. Such gross violation by commercial establishments has become common in the neighbourhood. The slush generated while drilling is let out into the nearby storm water drains. This cement-like coloured water solidifies and blocks the free flow of water in the drains. The very essence of construction of storm water drains is to prevent water stagnation in roads and if this kind of illegal activity takes place, how can the drains be efficient? With none to question these acts, such violations are openly committed. Unless steps are taken by the authorities to curb such violations, implementing Smart City projects will serve no purpose. B. Kannan, Secretary, T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar Corporation wants to improve facilities in playground Sir, Officials of Chennai Corporation, Zone 10, called on us the other day with a proposal to upgrade the playground located opposite Dr. Natesan Park, Venkatanarayana Road, T. Nagar. The proposal, inter alia, seeks to provide exclusive walkways for runners, toilets, a new mini basketball court, lawns, floodlights and improve the existing shuttle court, to name some aspects. The space now being used to play cricket and the area where the gymnasium is located will be left untouched. Once the above facilities are provided, the officials aver that the playground will get recognition to qualify for holding inter-state and national competitions. The project will be funded by Chennai Corporation and from the MLA s local area development fund. The officials stated that if the playground is upgraded with the above facilities, it will not be utilized for any other purposes in the future, lest a proposal could come up at a later date for an underground parking facility. The detailed plan of the proposal is available with the Association s Secretary whose contact number is 94442 10345. Residents are welcome to have a look at the plan and provide their views and suggestions which will be passed on to the officials concerned. T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar Street near temple misused for parking Sir, I am a resident of 53 rd Street, Ashok Nagar. There is a popular Anjaneyar temple on the street and a number of devotees visit it daily. Its surroundings are not public friendly as the space is encroached upon by beggars and roadside vendors. The situation is worse on Saturdays and on festive occasions as there is an increase in the number of visitors to the temple. Since there is no parking space due to encroachment outside the temple, devotees park their cars and 2- wheelers in the narrow 53 rd Street. The residents of the street are put to hardship as they find it difficult to take their vehicles in and out of the lane. Further, a number of devotees unabashedly park their vehicles in front of our gates thereby blocking the way. The Corporation garbage compactor lorry also often gets stuck as the road margins are blocked by cars. I appeal to the Corporation officials to prevent the parking of outsider vehicles on our narrow street and, instead, provide space for parking in the broader 7 th and 9 th Avenues close by. The Corporation can also charge a nominal parking fee. Dr. Chidambarakumaraswamy, 40, 53 rd Street, Ashok Nagar Auto drivers appeal for ban on OLA Auto unwarranted Sir, The autorickshaw drivers owing allegiance to a few political parties are on the warpath demanding that the State government ban OLA autos. The auto drivers main grouse is that they are unable to compete with the fair pricing by OLA autos. The auto drivers have reason to feel unhappy as they are no more in a position to fleece commuters. Even after the government has fixed minimum fare, no autos ply by the meter. Complaints made to the toll free number do not evoke a positive response. There has been no enforcement by the authorities either. The result is that the auto drivers take the passengers literally for a ride by fleecing them. The service provider OLA has regularized the auto service in the city. The OLA autos are the best bet for a place like Chennai, where commuters are otherwise at the mercy of the recalcitrant auto drivers. Instead of fighting for the ban on OLA autos, the private auto drivers should compete by charging as per meter to persuade the public to use their service as well. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Appeal to improve MTC service between Rangarajapuram and T. Nagar Sir, There is only one MTC bus plying on the route connecting Rangarajapuram/Five Lights with T. Nagar. It is causing lots of hardship to commuters. I appeal to MTC to add a few more buses on this route. Similarly, share autos plying to K. K. Nagar can go via Rangarajapuram. V. S. Narayanaswamy, T. Nagar
