And didst bid Thine Apostles proclaim a warning, that Thou hast risen O Christ, granting to the world the Great Mercy. Now sing the apolytikion of the patron saint or feast of the temple. KONTAKION FOR SUNDAY OF LAST JUDGMENT IN TONE ONE When Thou comest, O God, to earth with glory, and all creatures tremble before Thee, and the river of fire floweth before the Altar, and the books are opened and sins revealed, deliver me then from that unquenchable fire, and make me worthy to stand at Thy right hand, O righteous Judge. THE EPISTLE (For Sunday of the Last Judgment) The Lord is my strength and my praise. The Lord chastising hath chastised me, but He hath not delivered me over to death. The Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians. (8:8-9:2) Brethren, food will not commend us to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. Only take care, lest this liberty of yours somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if any one sees you a

man of knowledge at table in an idol s temple, might he not be encouraged, if his conscience is weak, to eat food offered to idols? And so by your knowledge this weak man is destroyed, the brother for whom Christ died. Thus, sinning against your brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of my brother s falling, I will never eat meat, lest I cause my brother to fall. Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? If to others I am not an apostle, at least I am to you; for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord. THE GOSPEL (For Sunday of the Last Judgment) The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (25:31-46) The Lord said, When the Son of man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. Before Him will be gathered all the nations, and He will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and He will place the sheep at His right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the King will say to those at His right hand, Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave Me food, I was thirsty and you gave Me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed Me, I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you visited Me, I was in prison and you came to Me. Then the righteous will answer Him, Lord, when did we see Thee hungry and feed Thee, or thirsty and give Thee drink? And when did we see Thee a stranger and welcome Thee, or naked and clothe Thee? And when did we see Thee sick or in prison and visit Thee? And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me. Then He will say to those at his left hand, Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave Me no food, I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome Me, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me. Then they also will answer, Lord, when did we see Thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to Thee? Then He will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to Me. And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom continues as usual. The Role of the Priest The role of the priest in his relatonship to lay people is defined by St. Paul in Ephesians 4:11-12, And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers (for the equipment of the saints, for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ... ) The priest s role is to be the equipper, enabler, coach, training the team to offer services to God by building up the body of Christ. If the priest is the coach, the laity are members of the team. What can the coach do without the team? As equipper and coach, the priest seeks to discover, encourage and cultivate the spiritual talents or charismata that lie dormant in his flock. He seeks to utilize them in lay evangelism, Christian witness, and ministry to the needy and suffering, to the building up of the Body of Christ. The work of the ministry is twofold: to gather the people of God for worship, instruction and empowering, and then to scatter them into the world as servants of Christ. We not only go to Church, we are the Church wherever we go. The true liturgy begins when we leave Church. The task of the ordained clergy is totrain the people of God that they will enter the world to show forth the love of God and the justice of God. The particular priesthood of the ordained clergy exists in order to train and develop the universal priesthood of the people of God who are, according to St. Peter... a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God s own people and whose purpose is to declare the wonderful deeds of Him Who call you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9-10) What is the Priest? As a delegate of the bishop, the Orthodox priest is the sacramental presence of Christ the High Priest and the Good Shepherd in the midst of God s people. In the words of Fr. Schmemann, He (the priest) is in the liturgy the visible icon of Christ Christ who as Man stands before God uniting and representing in Himself all of us, and who as God gives us the divine gifts of forgiveness, grace of the Holy Spirit, good of immortality... There can be therefore no liturgy, no worship of the Church without the Priest for it is precisely his duty to change the earthly and human congregation into the Church of God by perpetuating in it the mediating ministry of Christ. Some years ago in England the king was on the radio. In the middle of his speech an electric wire broke, preventing his voice from being carried to those who were listening. Realizing that there was no time to fix anything, an alert workman in the studio took the two wire ends in his hands, and became himself a part of the circuit, allowing the king s speech to continue. What that workman did for the king, every priest is called to do for Christ. He becomes part of the circuit to bring the voice and presence of Christ to us today. Many Church Fathers, i.e. St. Chrysostom and St. Gregory the Theologian, describe the priest as a bridge between heaven and earth, as a ladder leading upward. His task is to keep the world of God and the world of man connected. One of Christ s first and greatest priests, St. Paul, describes all priests when he says... we are ambassadors for Christ, God making His appeal through us. (1 Cor. 5:20) March is Antiochian Women s Month The month of March is recognized by the Archdiocese as Antiochian Women s Month. Antiochian Orthodox Christian Women of North America has been an official organization of our Archdiocese for over 30 years. The entire month of March is dedicated and set aside for the participation of Orthodox women in church life. The organization is open to all Antiochian Orthodox women, a sisterhood of women who have committed themselves to serve our Lord, our faith, our parishes and our Archdiocese. They serve in the spirit of Christian leadership, fostering love and service through chritable acts and creating fellowship and understanding through faith and traditions. They look forward to their journey of faith and work, together and welcome even more interested women to this wonderful group. We hope you will join them.
