PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ The 40-day season of Lent begins this week with Ash Wednesday on March 6 th. Masses on Ash Wednesday will be celebrated at 8:30am, 12:00pm, and 7:00pm. Ash Wednesday is a day of both fas ng from food (for everyone ages 18-59) and abstaining from ea ng meat (for everyone ages 14 and up). The obliga on to abstain from meat (ages 14 and up) also applies to all Fridays during the 40 days of Lent. Now, there is always some confusion about these regula ons, because every year I hear that people mistakenly believe that once you reach age 60, you are allowed to eat meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays in Lent. If that was your understanding, I m sorry to burst your bubble, but that is not true. If you are 60 or older, the thing that you are exempt from is the obliga on to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (the only two days of the year when fas ng is required). The fas ng regula on says that only one full meal can be eaten, but you can have two smaller meals during the day that together do not equal a full meal. Plus, ea ng between meals is not allowed. Fas ng applies to everyone ages 18-59. In contrast, abstaining from meat applies to every Catholic once you reach age 14; there is no upper age limit for abs nence (so, even if you re 90 years old, you need to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Lenten Fridays). During Lent I also invite you to par cipate in the tradi onal Lenten devo on of praying the Sta ons of the Cross. We will pray the Sta ons of the Cross every Friday during Lent at 6:30pm in church, following by Eucharis c Benedic on, beginning on March 8 th. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE HAVE CHANGED THE STARTING TIME FOR STATIONS THIS YEAR TO 6:30pm. And of course, I encourage everyone to save the date for our annual Lenten Mission. Our 2019 Lenten Mission Gi ed, Formed, and Sent will take place on the evenings of March 11, 12, & 13. As we did last year, we will be joining with parishioners from the parishes in our Renew My Church grouping. The first talk will take place here at St. Beatrice on Monday, March 11 th, with refreshments served at 6:00pm, and the talk beginning at 7:00pm in our church. The speaker will be Ka e Price, the Director of Stewardship for the Chicago Archdiocese. Ka e will speak about living stewardship and inten onal discipleship. The second talk will take place at Our Lady Mother of the Church on Tuesday, March 12 th, with refreshments served at 6:00pm, and the talk beginning at 7:00pm in their church. The speaker will be Tim Weiske, the Director of Strategic Planning and Implementa on for the Chicago Archdiocese. Tim will build on Ka e s presenta on by talking about how the newly created structures of Renew My Church will help us to be living stewards and inten onal disciples. The final evening will take place at Divine Savior on Wednesday, March 13 th at 6:00pm. This evening will be more of a social me there will be a sitdown meal at 6:00pm, followed by a brief video, and then discussion and Q&A. It will be an opportunity for parishioners from our different parishes to get to know one another be er. This year s Lenten Mission is based on the themes of Renew My Church (RMC), and every parish in the Archdiocese will par cipate in RMC within the next 5-10 years. So, I invite and strongly encourage you to a end our 2019 Mission, even if you can only come to one of the evenings. Finally, if you missed the Commitment Weekend for the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) last weekend, please know that you can s ll make a pledge, and your pledge is most definitely needed to support not only the Chicago Archdiocese s ministries, but also your parish of St. Beatrice. Our goal for this year s ACA is $16,367, and every dollar that we collect beyond that goal comes back to us (and we certainly need it!) And please remember that your pledge can be paid off over an en re year. Addi onally, you can always donate online at any me during the year. Go to our parish website at www.stbeatriceparish.org, scroll to the bo om, and you will see the link for the ACA. Your generosity is much appreciated, and much needed. St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel today, Jesus uses images in speaking to his disciples: Can a blind man act as a guide to a blind man?...why look at the speck in your brother's eye when you miss the plank in your own?...a good tree does not produce decayed fruit It is true that donations come to the Society because a good person produces goodness from the good in their heart. We learned that the Mass consists of two major parts, the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We also spent time learning about the sacrament of reconciliation. We learned that the sacrament of reconciliation cleanses us from our willful mistakes and helps give us the grace to become better and to avoid sin which hurts our relationship with God and others. We build up the kingdom through our own actions and deeds towards others. We learned that the Lord s prayer is often called the perfect prayer because it captures the message of the Gospels.
