The only exceptions will be during the Novena to St. Anne (July 17-26) and the Feast of the Assumption on August 15. FEAST OF OUR LADY OF MT. CARMEL Monday, July 16 th is the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. we shall honor Our Lady by offering enrollment in the Brown Scapular for those who have never been enrolled before following all the Masses. Enrollment in the Brown Scapular is once for life. Even if you stopped wearing the Scapular after having been enrolled, you need just begin wearing it again. Also, it is not necessary to have each new Brown Scapular blessed. If you are enrolled the blessing carries over to each new scapular. This is logical thinking as Carmelite Priests and Nuns do not get each new habit blessed or go through another clothing ceremony when their habit wears out. AIR CONDITIONING COLLECTION There will be a special second collection the weekend of July 22 to help cover the air conditioning expenses. Holy Innocents is fortunate to have air conditioning during the hot summer months. With the air conditioner running all day for over 12 hours, the electric bills are very high during this period.

JULY - Month of the Most Precious Blood THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST UPON CALVARY Priest and Victim at the same time, holy, innocent, without spot higher that the heavens, Jesus Christ offered to His Father the sacrifice of praise destined to glorify the Divinity and to open to man the way to eternal salvation. Mediator of the New Alliance, he has sealed with His Precious Blood the treaty of peace between heaven and earth. Immolated Lamb, He has effaced the sins of the world and acquired for it eternal redemption. The whole Catholic doctrine in regard to the redemption can be reduced to this: JESUS CHRIST HAS REDEEMED US BY THE SHEDDING OF HIS BLOOD UPON CALVARY. This adorable Blood purifies our souls by the application of its infinite merits, principally through the sacraments; it obtains the heavenly inheritance which procures for us eternal happiness. Our Lady's Promise of the Holy Scapular A gift to you from Our Lady. WHOSOEVER DIES IN THIS GARMENT SHALL NOT SUFFER ETERNAL FIRE. - promise of Our Lady to St. Simon Stock on July 16, 1251 The Sabbatine Privilege The Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel has promised to save those who wear the scapular from the fires of hell; She will also shorten their stay in purgatory if they should pass from this world still owing some debt of punishment. This promise is found in a Bull of Pope John XXII. The Blessed Virgin appeared to him and, speaking of those who wear the Brown Scapular, said, I, the Mother of Grace, shall descend on the Saturday after their death and whomsoever I shall find in purgatory I shall free so that I may lead them to the holy mountain of life everlasting. Our Lady assigned certain conditions which must be fulfilled: 1) Wear the Brown Scapular continuously. 2) Observe chastity according to one's state in life. 3) Recite daily the "Little Office of the Blessed Virgin." or: 3a) Observe the required fast of the Church as well as abstaining for meat on Wednesday and Saturday or: 3b) Recite the Rosary daily or: 3c) With permission, substitute some other good work. Pope Benedict XV, the celebrated World War I Pontiff, granted 500 days indulgence for devoutly kissing your scapular. The Morning Offering O my God, in union with the Immaculate Heart of Mary (here kiss the scapular as a sign of your consecration), I offer Thee the Precious Blood of Jesus from all the altars throughout the world, joining with It the offering of my every thought, word and action of this day. O my Jesus, I desire today to gain every indulgence and merit I can, and I offer them, together with myself, to Mary Immaculate, that she may best apply them to the interests of Thy most Sacred Heart. Precious Blood of Jesus, save us! Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us! Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us! The Popes and the Brown Scapular Pope Pius XII: All Carmelites, whether they live in the cloisters of the First or Second Orders or are members of the Third Order or of the Confraternities, belong to the same family of our Most Blessed Mother and are attached to it by a special bond of love. May they all see in this keepsake of the Virgin herself a mirror of humility and purity; may they read in the very simplicity of the Garment a concise lesson in modesty and simplicity; above all, may they behold in this same Garment, which they wear day and night, the eloquent expressive symbol of their prayers for divine assistance. Pope John XXIII: He spoke of the Mother of God who is honored in this Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Devotion to her becomes a necessity; towards Our Lady of Mount Carmel we are drawn with a most tender, yet irresistible, attraction. Pope Paul VI, speaking of Marian devotions, especially of the Scapular, says Let the faithful hold in high esteem the practices and devotions to the Blessed Virgin approved by the teaching authority of the Church. It is Our conviction that the Rosary of Mary and the Scapular of Carmel are among these recommended practices. The Scapular is a practice of piety, which by its very simplicity is suited to everyone.

HOLY INNOCENTS BOOKSHELF It Is Right and Just - Responses of the Roman Missal By John M. Cunningham, O. P. A commentary on the responses of the Ordinary of the Mass, drawing from the Fathers of the Church, with occasional additional references to the texts of Vatican Council II and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. A spiritual guide whose aim is to make our participation in the Liturgy... more engaged, informed, and profound. Aidan Nichols, O.P. REFLECTION FROM CATHERINE DOHERTY Confession is Vital Why is the sacrament of Confession so important? If you go to confession often, you sin less. It helps you to overcome difficulties and frees you of encumbrances. Just telling your sins makes you think. Tremendous grace is conferred upon a person who confesses often. It is very important to have a clean soul. You can work better. You can do good to other people better. But if you let Confession go for two months or so, your soul is in shambles. Everything is topsy turvy, like pieces of furniture piled on top of one another. The big sins certainly upset you, but the little sins, they pile up, and you have a combination of sins little sins on top of one another. At the end you think, What s the use? Before you know it you aren t going to Communion and the next thing you aren t going to church. So as a sort of key to other sacraments, Confession is vital. It is a key to your whole life. We are sinners before God. It is so very important to kneel down and tell the Lord, I am really sorry. To say that in front of another person who is a priest is absolutely necessary. It is good to say, I am sorry to God by yourself. But to go to a priest in Confession and acknowledge before someone else that I am in trouble is very important. If you have forgotten Confession, as recently so many have done, remember it again. --Kiss of Christ Available in the Bookstore in the Parish Office HOLY INNOCENTS ROSARY Holy Innocents is proud to introduce our own custom made Rosary by Ghirelli Rosaries in Italy. The beautiful, high quality Rosary is comprised of red Mother of Pearl lucite beads representing the blood shed by the Holy Innocents, Martyrs. The metal used is in antique silver finish. The crucifix is designed after the highly venerated Return Crucifix and is inscribed with Shrine & Parish Church of the Holy Innocents New York City on the back. The centerpiece features Our Mother of Perpetual Help and the façade of our beautiful church with the year of establishment. The Our Father medals feature representations of the most beloved devotions here at Holy Innocents and are modeled after the images in the church: the Tridentine Latin Mass, the Infant of Prague, the unborn represented by Our Lady of Guadalupe, and St. Anthony of Padua. On the backs of those medals is an image of a candle representing the many Vigil Lights lit here over the years. Each Rosary comes in a beautiful full color custom gift box and the price per Rosary is $40.00 plus sales tax. Stop by the Parish Office to see a sample of this one-of-a-kind Rosary exclusive to Holy Innocents. MASS TIMES A vacation from God is never taken. When traveling and preparing trips and vacations, do not forget to find the local church where you will be staying and attend Holy Mass there. Much effort is put into finding the perfect hotel, restaurants and recreational activities. How much effort is put into finding a church? Remember, it is a mortal sin to miss Holy Mass on a Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation and traveling does not dispense one from the Sunday Mass obligation! The following website will help you in finding a church while on vacation: www.masstimes.org The purpose of the Mass Times ministry is to help Catholics get to Mass by helping them find churches and worship times worldwide by easily providing worship times, church locations, contact information, website links and maps. MODESTY IN DRESS Now that the warm weather is upon us, out of respect for Our Lord and for the edification of our neighbors, we ask that men and women, boys and girls appear in church modestly and respectfully dressed. Shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, halter tops, bare midriffs, strapless, off-the-shoulder, backless or low-cut dresses/tops or tight fitting clothes, beachwear do not fit the norm of Christian modesty or respect. Do not be an occasion of sin for someone else! Your cooperation is evidence of your love for Our Lord and for His Most Holy Mother and is greatly appreciated.

The Shrine to the Unborn Blessed by Cardinal O Connor on December 28, 1993 Often children who have died before birth have no grave or headstone, and sometimes not even a name. At The Church of The Holy Innocents, we invite you to name your child(ren) and to have the opportunity to have your baby's name inscribed in our "BOOK OF LIFE". Here, a candle is always lit in their memory. All day long people stop to pray. On the first Monday of every month, our 12:15pm Mass is celebrated in honor of these children and for the comfort of their families. We pray that you will find peace in knowing that your child(ren) will be remembered at the Shrine and honored by all who pray here. We will inscribe the names of babies who have died before and at birth in our Book of Life, and as always, we invite you to visit the Shrine if you are in New York City. SUBWAY ROSARY The Shrine is dedicated in Memory of the Children Who Have Died Unborn We invite you to name your child(ren) and provide the opportunity to have your babyʹs name inscribed in our Book of Lifeʺ. Our Regina Mundi Praesidium of the Legion of Mary conducts a Subway Rosary on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. All are invited to join in this evangelization effort to spread devotion to Our Lady. Anyone interested in joining is asked to gather at Holy Innocents by 10:00 a.m. The group will then proceed to either Herald Square, Duffy Square, or a subway station for the recitation of the 20 decades of the Holy Rosary and return back to Holy Innocents around 12:30 p.m. Come for all or part of the Subway Rosary! Upcoming Subway Rosaries July 28 August 11 VOLUNTEER SINGERS NEEDED BIBLE STUDY led by Fr. Louis Sundays at 1:15 p.m., following the 12:30 p.m. Mass. Takes place in the lower Church Hall.
