May 3, 2015 Page 3 OUR LADY OF FATIMA SCHOOL NEWS We are so excited to announce that thanks to a most successful school auction, we are able to finally RETIRE THE BUILDING DEBT! Thank you so very much to everyone who donated, sponsored, volunteered, participated, and bid. We also thank our Fundraising Director Jennifer Wathen who does such an outstanding job for us each year! Final numbers are still being calculated, but this is looking like one of our most successful auctions ever. We are tremendously grateful! Other news we'd like to share this week has to do with Common Core State Standards. As these have been implemented nationwide, many parents are feeling frustrated because their children are learning in ways that are unfamiliar. To address this, a group of organizations came together to create the Homework Help Desk (www.homeworkhelpdesk.org) where parents can find answers to their questions, practice links, and even a live text chat with teachers. The Help Desk was launched at the end of March and since then thousands of parents across the country have logged on, found their answers to their questions, and generally raved about it. Positive reaction is pouring in from Alabama to New York to Washington. One teacher from New York blogged about it and called it "A Must Have Resource for All Parents. Why is this relevant to Fatima? Because the primary author of the site is our own 4th grade teacher Mary Van Tassell. In partnership with Marie Groark, Fatima parent and Executive Director of the Get Schooled Foundation, she helped to identify common parent questions, articulated the answers to those questions, and found relevant supports. We are lucky to have the teachers we do at Fatima and it feels great to share their talents with the rest of the country! GOOD SHEPHERD PRESCHOOL There are openings at Our Lady of Fatima s Good Shepherd Preschool, for the 2015-2016 school year.
