From Rabbi Alan Berg If Ever a Year Needed Purim, It s 5776! Join Us On Friday Evening March 18 Carnival at 6:00 - Megillah Reading Spiel at 7:00 (Regular Erev Shabbat Service at 5:00) Dear Friends, I know it seems like a very hard time in the world. I m not just talking about the news. It s been raining for 18 weeks. I m worried about trees falling anywhere without warning. And there s more. The traffic has become untenable. Somehow traffic planners in Portland have decided against turning lanes being where they are supposed to be. It gets worse. It s as hard to get a ticket for a show in Portland as it is in San Francisco. Jimmy Mack s is sold out six months ahead of time. The parking meters just went up 10 percent. And as I was walking past a bum in front of the library, he looked at my cap and yelled at me, Is that a Kangol? I ll give you a hundred bucks for it? I can t get no respect! I didn t know what a Kangol was until I came home and looked it up. If Ever a Year Needed Purim, It s 5776!! And does Beit Haverim have a Purim for you!! For the younger ones, we have a delightful carnival at 6:00pm after our traditional Shabbat service at 5:00. Then at 7:00, there s a Megillah reading event for all, with our distinguished Megillah reading, singing and always serious assistants, the often hilarious and always wonderful Gabe Hunter-Bernstein and the often motivational and always wonderful Cantor Ann Brown! Esther! Mordechai! King Ahashvarios (gesundheit), Haman; Who Could Be Missing? DON T LET IT BE YOU!!! Don t ya miss Purim!! After all - it s been a long winter!!! B Shalom, Rabbi Alan Berg page 2
From Our President, Sue Greenspan The Winter Pledge Drive at OPB has finally come to an end after several weeks. The volunteers standing by to take your calls have hung up for the last time, and the thank you gifts for your donations have been re-shelved until the next campaign. Likewise, the Beit Haverim Pledge Drive is also coming to an end. Unfortunately, we do not have a team of volunteers standing by to take your calls, but we do have lovely gifts for our pledges; a caring Rabbi, a spiritual home, Friday nights with inspirational services, beautiful music, homemade challah, a sense of community, a say in how the congregation is run, religious education for our children, adult education classes, Torah study, book discussions, Men s Club events, Ladies Night Out and many other social activities throughout the year. It is through your generous pledges that Beit Haverim is able to present you with all these programs, It is critical to raise these funds in order to insure that all these programs continue. We ask you to open your hearts and consider giving beyond the amount you donated last year to help us to continue to thrive. Contact Barbara Gray, our office manager, at (503) 310-9184 or office@beithav.org for information on your pledge or to make a pledge. B Shalom, Sue. page 3

Tikkun Olam Our committee has had some amazing meetings with discussions that inform, stimulate and inspire. We hope that in the future, you will attend a meeting and see if Tikkun Olam is a good fit for your interests. Join us for our next get-together on Sunday, March 13, at 2:30pm. We ll be brainstorming projects for the summer and early fall. Be sure to save the date: April 24th at 2:30pm for a special program that Tikkun Olam is presenting. We hope to have lots of people from LOUCC join us, as well. The program will be about Child Sex Trafficking. This is a topic that is hard to consider, but necessary, as Portland is a hotbed of activity for this noxious practice. Let s get our awareness raised together as we snack on coffee and macaroons (it ll be during Passover). More information coming your way! Barbara Gold Tikkun Olam Chairman page 5
