LENT HAS BEGUN! On Wednesday, February 1st we began the season of Lent. The Church teaches that Lent calls us to perform acts of penance, give alms, and fast & abstain. There are two days on which we both fast & abstain. These are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If you have completed your 18th year and until the age of 60, the Church asks you to fast. That is, to eat one full meal and two lighter ones, which when added together would equal a full meal. Ordinary liquids do not break the fast. Please check with your doctor and priest if you have any health issues! If you have completed your 14th year and throughout the rest of your life, the Church asks that you abstain on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and every Friday during Lent. To abstain means not to eat meat. Fish, eggs, cheese, and dairy products may be eaten. All Catholics are required, as a minimum, to receive the Eucharist during the Easter season; the Communicants should be in a state of grace when receiving.
