St. Pulcheria, July 7 On the Sanctoral Calendar of the Polish National Catholic Church, today we remember St. Pulcheria. She was born in 398 CE and dies in 454 CE of natural causes. St. Pulceria is unique and uniquely remembered as a saint both because of her works in the early church and because she was the first female emperor of the Roman Empire. St. Pulcheria was the daughter of the Emperor Arcadius, and had two brothers, Arcadia and Theodosius II, who became Emperor upon the death of his father. Pulcheria made a vow of virginity in 412 and at that time dedicated her life to the service of God and His Church while remaining in the royal household. She would not even let a male in her presence so any hint of scandal could be avoided. She continued in her service, and as an aid to Theodosius II until his death while riding on horseback in 450. At that time, she became emperor of the Roman Empire. After she planned the state funeral for her brother, the Roman Senate forced her to marry, and break her vow of virginity. At this time as well, the Council of Ephesus was taking place and a debate ensued between Nestorius and Cyril of Alexandria on the nature of Christ. Cyril insisted Christ had both a divine and human nature, while Nestorius said Christ was only human. As the debate continued, Nestorius started a smear campaign against Pulcheria where he claimed that she was sleeping with 7 men at the same time and profaning the Lord because of her vow. This was not so, and Nestorius was exiled back to his monastery. Due to another conflict that came up during the council, another council was called by Pulcheria, the Council of Chalcedon, which was called to consider Mary as theotokos (Mother of God). St. Pulcheria is honored as a saint since she was a strong woman who served God the best she could, and helped to clear up doctrinal controversies in the early Church. Clean Sweep Clean Sweep will resumes this Tuesday July 9 at 6 PM. Cleaning Supplies Donations Our Savior is still accepting donations of cleaning supplies throughout the Summer months. Mass Intention The Mass Intention this week is for Antonia Marques by Paul Grzesik and Stanley and Jean Burcicki by Ron Burcicki A Note From the Pastor! Behold, I have given you the power to tread upon serpents and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ. The Parish Committee Meeting is this Wednesday at 7 PM. All committee members are required to attend, and all parishioners are welcome to come. I encourage all to attend. As we enjoy our Summer vacations and off days, let us not forget to make God a part of our Summer plans. We are still having Mass on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays throughout the Summer months, so plan on making some extra worship of Our Savior a part of your plans. Have a blessed week! Fr. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. Lk 9:51-62 At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, Peace to this household. If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, The kingdom of God is at hand for you. Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say, The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand. I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town. The seventy-two returned rejoicing, and said, Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name. Jesus said, I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky. Is 66:10-14 Thus says the LORD: Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her, all you who love her; exult, exult with her, all you who were mourning over her! Oh, that you may suck fully of the milk of her comfort, that you may nurse with delight at her abundant breasts! For thus says the LORD: Lo, I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river, and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing torrent. As nurslings, you shall be carried in her arms, and fondled in her lap; as a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort.
