Reflections: Thank You John 21 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in Matthew 25:35 Jesus tells us that those who are in need are our brothers and sisters, and the Gospel speaks of the love that God has for the poor and the stranger. We hear this in the readings this week from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. Thus says the LORD: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. (Isaiah 7:8) What the prophet is telling us is that the needs of the poor are not theirs alone, but ours. That we must take on the suffering of the poor and work tirelessly to end the misery associated with hunger and need. We are called to be compassionate as God is compassionate. The word compassion comes to us from the Latin cum passio which means to suffer with. But, as so often is the case, we get caught up in our daily lives and forget the needs of the poor. God calls us to remember the poor and to work to alleviate their suffering. Here at St. Patrick s we have the John 21 Community Breakfast every Saturday from 8:00 to 10:00 AM and all are welcome to attend without cost. It is made possible through the generosity of the community and is our way to reach out to those in need. Many people in our parish community serve this ministry through donations and others through donating their time. It is a most beautiful ministry and one that is in need of our constant support. Another way to help over the next few weeks will be taking part in the collection for the Homeless Care packages that Ray Kane s Decision Point class, as well as Faith Formation will then put together and bring to the homeless. Please see the insert for more details. Pope Francis calls to us to remember the poor as a central part of our faith as Catholics. Feeding the poor is not just a nice thing to do, but is a requirement of the Gospel. God s concern for the poor must be our own if we truly wish to be disciples of Jesus Christ. So, I encourage you, brothers and sisters, not only to pray for the poor always, but to do something concrete to help those in need. Enter into their suffering in a tangible manner, so as to be a light in their darkness. The prophet Isaiah says, if you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like midday. (Isaiah 7:10) If you would like to help this ministry in some way, please contact the rectory. God Bless, Deacon Chris Called to Serve As Disciples of Christ we are called to serve. There are many different ways in which to serve here at St. Patrick s and we would love to help you find the best place for you to fulfill the call to serve. Our website at St Patrick s is one way to inquire and another way is to contact our Ministry Coordinator, Deacon Patrick by email or phone. Please feel free to get in touch with Deacon Patrick if only to discuss your possibilities. Serving in whatever way God calls you is a most important part of our community here at St Patrick s. Please consider and contact us whenever you feel called! Call 508-234-5656 or e-mail DeaconPat@mystpatricks.com.
