THE STAR Rooted AUGUST 2017 in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church Elmhurst, Illinois In Memoriam John David Tanis 1951-2017 A memorial service will be held for John D. Tanis, our director of music for more than 20 years, on Saturday, August 26, 11:00 a.m., at Epiphany. As you would expect, we will worship mostly through music as we remember God s promises, commend John to almighty God, and celebrate John s life, work, and ministry. Leading us in worship will be choirs that John directed, children whom John inspired, and students with whom John shared his love for praising God through music. Please join us on Saturday, August 26, 11:00 a.m., as we remember this extraordinary man and musician. Let s give him a glorious send-off!

Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 2 A Few Words From Pastor Feltman Some years ago, I was browsing in the gift shop of the National Cathedral in Washington, DC when I came across a beautiful, artistic piece which included these words in calligraphy: The journey itself is home. The journey itself is home. Those five, simple words nearly brought me to tears, because I was going through a time when there seemed to be nothing but change. I couldn t steady my feet beneath me. Nothing was a sure thing. Everything I stood on felt like sinking sand. I wondered whether I would ever find a sense of stability. I wanted my life to cease being a journey so that I could arrive at home a steady place where I could really live life. The journey itself is home. Those words hit like a lightning bolt in my head and heart. This side of heaven, we are never completely at home. Those simple words bear witness to the sometimes-painful truth that our lives are a journey, not a destination. My time at Epiphany has been a journey, one that I have desperately wished would end so that we could arrive at some sort of home. We lost our senior pastor of nearly 20 years under difficult circumstances. We lost our office administrator when she died suddenly. We were slammed with the news that our new pastor s husband was battling cancer, then slammed again with the news of his death. We watched as our beloved director of music, John Tanis, struggled with lymphoma and lost his battle all too soon. We now surround our custodian of 23 years, Maria Terracciano, as she is treated for cancer. Anyone ready, as I am, to have this Epiphany journey end so that we can finally be on the safe, steady soil of home? The journey itself is home. Those five, simple words I found at a gift shop in Washington tell an important truth about life. All of it is a journey. There is no other place to live. As difficult as that reality is, I have come to see the grace in understanding life as a journey. The journey often brings pain, but it also brings new life and exciting possibilities. Even as we say goodbye to yet another faithful servant of Epiphany, we rejoice that Pastor Jen has found enough healing to be our pastor again. We rejoice that the Spirit has sent our way a bright, energetic young pastor to join our team. I mourn deeply the loss of my colleague, John. His death leaves a hole in our hearts and our ministries that will be hard to fill. But I also am thankful for the newness that God has given. I trust, as Martin Luther so wonderfully wrote in a prayer, that God s hand is leading us and God s love is supporting us. Your fellow traveler, Pastor Ron Feltman

Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 8 Summer Reading Book Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger Hosted by: Heather Feltman Date: Monday, August 21, 2017 Time: 7:00-9:00 p.m. Location: The Feltmans, 596 S. Spring Rd, Elmhurst From New York Times bestselling author William Kent Krueger comes a brilliant novel about a young man, a small town, and murder in the summer of 1961. Published in 2013, this book went on to win the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 2014. New Bremen, Minnesota, 1961. The Twins were playing their debut season, ice-cold root beers were at the ready at Halderson s Drug Store soda counter, and Hot Stuff comic books were a mainstay on every barbershop magazine rack. It was a time of innocence and hope for a country with a new, young president. But for thirteen-year-old Frank Drum it was a summer in which death assumed many forms. When tragedy unexpectedly comes to call on his family, which includes his Methodist minister father, his passionate, artistic mother, Juilliard-bound older sister, and wise-beyond-his years kid brother, Frank finds himself thrust into an adult world full of secrets, lies, adultery, and betrayal. On the surface, Ordinary Grace is the story of the murder of a beautiful young woman, a beloved daughter and sister. At heart, it s the story of what that tragedy does to a boy, his family, and ultimately the fabric of the small town in which he lives. Told from Frank s perspective forty years after that fateful summer, it is a moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him. It is an unforgettable novel about discovering the terrible price of wisdom and the enduring grace of God.

Rooted in Christ Growing in Faith Reaching to Invite and Serve 9 Check It Out! "She'd spent the better part of the day trying not to think about her mother and parole. Olivia kept shaking her out of her worry by reminding her at least Dad and Naomi weren't getting a divorce. And neither had cancer. But still." Being a teenager is tough: accused of theft, working with rescue dogs, and running a small business keep Emily busy, but not too busy to worry extensively about keeping right with God. The Native American's Windigo seems to stalk the local woods. Can God keep her safe body and soul? Does Josh think she's cute? On Thursday evenings beginning after Labor Day, we will gather at Stardust Bowl in Addison. This league is designed for fun, and no matter what your average might be or how long it may have been since you last bowled (if ever!) we guarantee balanced competition and fun for everyone. Teams are formed with a goal in mind of being evenly skilled and having close matches, and close team scores are often the case. We prefer for bowlers to sign up for the full season which runs until May with a number of holidays taken off during the year. We know that this schedule can be challenging for some, so if you want to join for half the season, that s O.K., too. The league needs more bowlers, so we re hoping you ll give it a try! If you are interested and/or have questions, please contact Bob Sutherland at (630) 279-1636 or Marty Jensen at (630) 605-6414. NOTE: Returning bowlers should also contact Bob or Marty as soon as possible to confirm and secure your spot in the league!
