T H O U G H T O F T H E W E E K The Heart Of Religion 10 Aug 2017 Imagine your life is a home. In this home are many rooms. Each room represents an aspect of your life. There is a room for health. In this room, you get a good night s sleep, work out on the exercise equipment, and cook up healthy meals. But be careful not to ignore the treadmill and just raid the fridge. There is a room for the mind. In this room there are books, games, puzzles, language classes, philosophical hypotheticals, and a well-equipped desk for doing your homework. There is a room for your heart. In this room there are couches, games, a computer, a mobile phone, all manner of fun activities, friends and family, some good books, and a well-stocked fridge. There is a room for industry. This is where you go to work five days a week, where you plant a vegetable garden, or build the kids a cubby house. There is also a room for spirituality. Some may call it religion, and yes, I know that God is with us in every room, but this is just a metaphor remember. They say the key to living a healthy and balanced life is to spend a little time every day in every room. But I want to focus on the spiritual room for just a moment. In this room, there is a bookcase with a well-worn Bible and many other inspirational and devotional books. There is a piano for singing praises, a big vase of fresh flowers, and a botany corner with a telescope and a microscope for studying nature. The walls are filled with beautiful art and the room is filled with the sunlight of love and hope. In the centre of the room is a well-worn but comfy armchair with a journal and a pen sitting on the seat. If the spiritual room is the heart and soul of the house, then this armchair is the heart and soul of the spiritual room. What happens on this chair? This is where you sit and pray. This is where you commune with God one on One. Do not neglect your personal and private prayer-life, for it is the soul of religion 1 T 163. So, no matter how busy you get, or how great your burdens, remember to follow the example of our Lord, and pray without ceasing 1 Thess. 5:17.
