Advent 2010 - Seasonal Focus The Season of Advent is always focused on preparing for the coming of Christ in all of its many aspects. This year the readings of the A cycle draw our attention especially to impact of the incarnation upon everything. Many of the readings of the season contrast the before and the after : the world and how things were before the birth of the Messiah with the world and how things will be after the birth of the Messiah. Second Sunday of Advent: On that day, the Spirit of the Lord will rule. There is a common theme of prophecy in these readings, especially in the second reading and in the gospel, where prophets are quoted. Again, we notice all the future tense verbs, especially in the first reading and in the gospel, contrasting what was before with what will come on that day. If we live by the Spirit, we will be able to live with each other. It s only by the Spirit that this will happen. We need to get the Spirit through repentance. Paul (second reading) brings the Gentiles into the picture as recipients of the promise originally made to the patriarchs, while John warns the Pharisees and Sadducees that God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones; the evidence of being in line with God is the good fruit that we produce. We are reminded that God s way is not our way. Traveling Chalice A Program of Awareness and Prayer for Vocations This week our parish gratefully acknowledges Dorothy & Floyd Dominy as they host our Traveling Chalice
General Announcements ADVENT BEREAVEMENT SERVICE: Our Advent Bereavement Service will be held on Monday, December 20 th at 6:30 p.m. in church, followed by a social in the parish center. All are invited to attend, especially those who have lost a loved one. There will be no Youth Mass on Sunday, December 12 th. Middle School youth will gather at 5:30 p.m. in their classrooms. ARK LIBRARY: The Ark Library will be open next weekend following all Masses. Join us to browse through the many books and videos that our Ark Library has to offer. BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING: Camillus Ministry blood pressure screening is held next weekend in the parish center after all Masses. TAIZE PRAYER: Lead us to your light, Lead us out of darkness. Lead us to your light. Come, Jesus, come. This Advent gathering song will summon us to Taize Prayer at St. Mary, Janesville, on Monday, December 13 th at 7:00 p.m. As always, our time together will be a chance to un-crowd our hearts and minds, refresh our spirits and offers a welcome respite from the busy-ness of these days of preparation for Christmas. Come and bask in the light of candles and the warmth of friendship, raise your voice in simple and prayerful songs, attend to God s message in Scripture, and listen in silence for God s voice in your heart. ADULT CATHOLIC SPIRIT CLUB: We will meet at noon on Wednesday, December 8 th in St. John Vianney s Marian Hall. Please bring a dish to share and your own table service. Join other adults from your own and other parishes for a delicious and festive potluck. After the meal, Frank Daniels and the Troubadors will put us in the mood for Christmas with their seasonal renditions. Last year we had looked forward to hearing these musicians, but the most severe snowstorm of the season forced us to cancel our meeting. Butter luck this time! Welcome to all adults of the area. For further information, call 754-9037.
Stewardship: A Way of Life Second Sunday of Advent John the Baptist in today s Gospel says we must change ourselves. Change is a great idea but how do we do that? Sixteen hundred years ago a young man struggling with change prayed to God to change him, but not yet. Finally, he faced his own emptiness and powerlessness and was quiet enough to hear the still small voice. God said, Take up and read, and the scriptures fell open to Romans 13:13-14. His name was Augustine, and he later became bishop, theologian and doctor of the Church. During this Advent spend time in a quiet place, and use the silence to ask what God is waiting to tell you. NEXT WEEKEND! BLESS OUR PRIESTS COLLECTION FOR DIOCESAN RETIRED PRIESTS: Please take advantage of this opportunity to offer support to the retired priests of our diocese by helping provide for their healthcare needs. Your donation will help serve those who have faithfully served us! Thank you. Prayer of the Faithful: For the retired priests of our diocese, that they may experience peace and joy in their retirement for the countless years of service they have provided to the people of our diocese. Let us pray to the Lord. POSTPARTUM NFP CLASS: The Couple to Couple League (CCL) will hold a Natural Family Planning class on the postpartum period at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 11 th at Immaculate Heart of Mary, Monona. To register for the class or to find out how you can take the class, even if you have never taken a CCL main course, contact Mary Mead at 608-221-9593 or nfp@straphael.org. 2010 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL WRAP-UP INFORMATION: Please read the Annual Catholic Appeal wrap-up in today s bulletin. This information indicates participation and performance information as well as how the funds collected will be used to meet our spiritual and material needs. Thank you to all who participated in this important part of parish and diocesan life!

CHRISTMAS HELP FOR OTHERS: Once again this year, we have special Christmas needs that we annually help with donations: Rock Haven residents, and parishioners of our sister parish St. Anthony in Neopit, Wisconsin. Sister Parish Dollar Tree ENDS This Weekend The Christmas Giving Tree has become a Dollar Tree for the families in need in our Sister parish. St. Anthony has made an additional request. Several of their parishioners must travel to Madison or Milwaukee for medical attention. To help ease the cost of travel, St. Anthony is requesting gasoline cards from the following companies: BP, Exxon Mobile and Shell. Final collection date is December 5 th. Rock Haven We ask that gifts are place in gift bags rather than wrapped as they are easier for the residents to open. Please have all gifts to church no later than Sunday, December 12 th. Gifts will be delivered to Rock Haven on Saturday, December 18 th. If there is someone with a large covered vehicle who would like to help with delivery on the 18 th, please contact Randi at 884-3055. Thank you again for your generosity. All the dates above are hard and fast so that we can get them to the people in need by early December. Thank you again for your generosity.
