GOD S INSTRUCTIONS to HEADS of TRIBES re: VOWS - NUMBERS 30 Restrictions of Vows Made: If a man makes a vow, he shall do all that he sayeth If a woman in her youth makes a vow in her father s house which he hears, and he holds his peace, then the vow stands. If her father disallows her THAT DAY, her vows will not stand. [This principle is the same for a married woman and her husband, as stated above for a father and daughter.]

STRONG ADVICE TO THE VOWER ECCLESIASTES 5:4-6 4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. 5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. 6 Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?

TWO TYPES of NAZARITES >Those by personal PROCLAMATION >LIFETIME APPOINTMENTS by YAHWEH: SAMSON SAMUEL JOHN the BAPTIST

WHAT did these Three NAZARITES have in COMMON? SAMSON: Judges 13 And his wife was barren, and bare not. (Manoah s wife -- unnamed) SAMUEL: I Samuel 5 But the LORD had shut up her womb (Hannah) JOHN the BAPTIST: Luke 1:7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they were both well stricken in years.

SAMSON - Judges 13-16 Nazarite from Birth Hand picked by God to BEGIN to deliver Israel from the Philistines Judged Israel 20 years

The SPIRIT of the LORD Directed SAMSON Judges 14:6... Came MIGHTILY Upon Him (Not defiled by lion s carcass) Judges 14:19... Came Upon Him (Not defiled by slaying of 30 men) Judges 15:15... Came MIGHTILY Upon Him (Not defiled by slaying 1000 men with jawbone of an ass)

Hannah s Sorrow - 1 Samuel 1:1-6 Elkanah had two wives: Peninnah had sons & daughters Hannah was barrenmade to fret (cause to tremble) by Peninnah s provocations.

HANNAH S EARNEST VOW 1 SAMUEL 1:11-18 11) Hannah said, IF thou wilt... give me a man child, THEN I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall be no razor come upon his head.

HANNAH brings SAMUEL to ELI 1 Samuel 1:23-28 Samuel taken when weaned-- likely about 5 years old Hannah took sacrifices to be offered Hannah tells Eli she is the one who prayed for this child and God heard her petition

1 Samuel 2:18-21 Samuel ministered before God as a child - wearing a linen ephod. Hannah brought him a little coat each year when they came up to sacrifice. Eli prayed that Elkanah & Hannah have more children - they had 3 sons & 2 daughters. (v 20-21)

SAMUEL - A PROPHET & JUDGE Samuel grew to be IN FAVOR with the LORD and Men (1 Sam. 2:26) Samuel the PROPHET (1 Sam. 3:20) Samuel JUDGED all the days of his life (1 Sam. 7:5) Samuel WARNS people against wanting an earthly King-- they had God! Hearken to the people they have not rejected thee, but they have REJECTED ME, that I should not reign over them. (1 Sam. 8:19) God tells Samuel to look on the heart, not outward appearance of candidate for King. (1 Sam. 16:7) Samuel DIES (1Sam. 25:1)

JOHN the BAPTIST - NAZARITE Luke 1:14-15 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother s womb.

JEPHTHAH ~ JUDGES 11-12 Q. WHO was he? WHERE did he live? WAS God with him? WHAT lessons may we Learn? A. Jephthah was a Gileadite; his mother was possibly a Canaanite who was married to his father, Gilead. 11:1-2) Descendants of Manasseh. Jephthah was the firstborn. Gilead had another wife who bare him sons. (Judges

JEPHTHAH S FAMILY SITUATION v.1-3 A. Jephthah was a mighty man of valour, a young man who had learned to fight against enemies of Israel and maybe Ammonite marauders. ( Vain men with him were paid to fight.) His half-brothers thrust him out of the family so he would not inherit. v.2, Thou shalt not inherit in our father s house; for thou art the son of a strange woman ; a harlot or an innkeeper. They implied he was unworthy due to his mother not being Jewish. Compare to Joseph, who was thrust out by his half-brothers, but who later saved them by God s divine plan.
